When a YouTube encoder disconnects, check the encoder-to-YouTube connection separately from StreamVoodoo. StreamVoodoo supplies remote guest video to your production setup; OBS, vMix, or another encoder sends the finished program to YouTube. Restore the encoder feed, then verify the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before treating the broadcast as back on air.
Understand which connection has failed
A live production has distinct links, and a healthy link at one stage does not prove the whole broadcast is reaching viewers.
- Guest contribution: StreamVoodoo rooms provide remote video feeds. Its FAQ describes Magic Links that can be added as browser sources in OBS or vMix.
- Production and encoding: The switcher or encoder combines the guest feeds and other show elements, then sends the finished output to YouTube.
- YouTube ingestion: The encoder uses the YouTube stream URL and stream key for the intended event. Live Control Room shows YouTube’s view of the incoming stream, including stream health and status messages.
So, if the YouTube encoder disconnects while a StreamVoodoo guest is still present, restoring the guest’s Magic Link is not the same as restoring the encoder-to-YouTube feed. Conversely, if YouTube is receiving the show but a guest is missing, investigate that guest’s StreamVoodoo feed.
Reconnect and verify the YouTube encoder
- Confirm the intended destination. In the encoder, check that the selected YouTube event is the one you mean to broadcast. Verify that its configured stream URL and stream key match the connection details for that event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance identifies these as the connection details entered in the encoder.
- Inspect the encoder itself. Check whether it is still running, review any error message, and confirm that its local program output contains the expected picture and sound. YouTube recommends using a current encoder and checking output and CPU load when troubleshooting.
- Check the outgoing network connection. If the encoder output looks right but the connection is unstable, test the outbound internet path. YouTube advises troubleshooting the network connection or contacting the ISP when the outgoing connection is the problem.
- Check YouTube’s receiving side. Open Live Control Room for the intended event. Review stream health and any status messages, then confirm that the incoming preview returns. YouTube notes that creators can check stream health and analytics in Live Control Room while streaming. Wait for a usable preview before relying on the feed as live.
- Handle a stream-key error deliberately. If YouTube reports an encoder start error, use the stream key for the intended event from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder as directed by YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. Then try starting the encoder and check the preview again.
- If it still does not return, capture the state before changing events. Note the exact encoder error, YouTube stream-health message, and whether the event still appears active in Studio. Avoid repeatedly ending or creating events without first checking that state. The YouTube help pages cited here do not specify a universal reconnect window or guarantee that restarting an encoder will resume the same event; the event and account setup can matter.
Keep the StreamVoodoo guest feed separate in your checks
If Live Control Room shows a healthy incoming YouTube stream but a remote participant is absent, inspect the StreamVoodoo room and that guest’s feed rather than changing YouTube credentials. StreamVoodoo describes Magic Links as individual video-with-sound outputs for a switcher, so check whether the affected browser source is present and receiving the guest.

StreamVoodoo recommends Ethernet for its highest video settings to perform as intended. A wired connection can be a sensible setup choice where practical, but that recommendation is not evidence that Ethernet prevents an encoder reconnect or a YouTube-side interruption. StreamVoodoo’s FAQ also says rooms remain for one week after the host leaves; that room lifetime does not mean a YouTube live event will keep running.
Common reconnect problems and what to check

Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like routing credentials. Do not show a complete key in screenshots, recordings, or public troubleshooting posts. Replace or reset a key only when there is a concrete reason, such as a key problem or suspected compromise; otherwise, first verify that the configured key belongs to the intended event.
