VLC must be installed for this source to appear. OBS randomizes playback order; YouTube does not shuffle the playlist. A loop does not guarantee a newly randomized order each time it starts over.
Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS documents the VLC Video Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add the VLC source. In OBS, select the scene that should show the videos. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video Source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how to add sources.
- Load your files. Open the VLC Video Source properties and add the local media files to its playlist. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. If a file uses another format, check the OBS documentation or convert it to a supported format.
- Turn on the playlist options. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the media order. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the list ends. OBS documents shuffle as off and loop as on by default, so check both settings rather than assuming they are enabled.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. In the source properties, choose whether it stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or keeps playing while not visible. This matters if you switch scenes or hide the source; it has little practical effect while the source stays visible in the active scene.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. The creator must be at least 16. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select a livestream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to find the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start and inspect the encoder stream. Start streaming in OBS, then use Live Control Room to preview and manage the broadcast. Before leaving it unattended, confirm that both video and audio are present. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking that local archive files are growing; see its live streaming tips.
What shuffle and loop do—and do not guarantee
The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, describes the setting this way: “Shuffle Playlist | Specifies if the source should randomize the media files being played or stay in the order of the file list”. Shuffle changes the playback order in OBS before it encodes the stream; it does not grant new rights to the videos or affect YouTube’s own playback system.
Shuffle and loop are separate behaviors: loop restarts the list when it finishes, while shuffle randomizes the order. OBS does not promise that every loop creates a fresh random sequence. The current source implementation can be inspected in the VLC Video Source code, but that moving code reference is version-sensitive. An issue filed for OBS 32.1.1 on April 26, 2026, requested reshuffling on initialization or reload and was closed as not planned; it is a report about that behavior, not proof of how every version and configuration behaves. If a new order at each cycle is essential, test your exact OBS version and playlist before relying on it.
Important limits for a continuous broadcast
Plan for connection interruptions
OBS must keep encoding and sending the broadcast, so local streaming depends on the computer and network remaining available. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload-bandwidth headroom of 20% and warn that connection interruptions can break a stream. A playlist looping in OBS does not by itself restore a dropped YouTube connection.

Do not count on a complete 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording if the archive matters. YouTube’s DVR guidance also notes that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete replay from one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast.
Confirm rights for every file
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream the playlist, including applicable music rights, and for complying with YouTube’s rules and applicable law. Shuffling or looping material does not create permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and the copyright safety checklist before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common problems
