Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To prevent OBS audio clipping, identify which source carries the playlist, play its loudest section, and lower the level before it reaches full scale. Then check the OBS meter for the captured source, add a Limiter filter if peaks still need control, and make a test recording to listen back. A limiter catches peaks; it will not make quiet and loud tracks sound equally loud.
1. Identify how the playlist reaches OBS
The right control depends on the audio path. Find the source in the OBS Audio Mixer before changing levels.
| Playback method | What to check in OBS | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local file in Media Source | Check the dedicated Media Source in the mixer. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats for this source. OBS Project, Media Sources | A dedicated source makes the playlist audio path easier to isolate, but Media Source is for an individual media file. |
| Local playlist in VLC Video | Check the VLC Video source. It supports playlists, looping, and shuffle. VLC must be installed; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. OBS Project, Media Sources | Offers playlist controls, with VLC as an additional dependency. |
| YouTube playlist in a browser | Verify whether OBS captures the browser/application specifically or captures desktop audio, and watch the meter for that captured source. | Application capture can isolate the browser; desktop capture may include other system sounds in the mix. OBS describes audio, desktop, and application capture categories in its Sources Guide. |
Do not assume the browser’s volume percentage corresponds to a particular OBS meter level. Use the meter for the audio source OBS actually records or streams.
2. Find the loudest section and leave headroom
- Start playback at a loud passage or a transition between tracks—not only at a quiet introduction.
- Watch the peak meter for the playlist source in the Audio Mixer. OBS says red is close to clipping; its peak-hold indicator shows the loudest level in the previous 20 seconds. OBS Project, Audio Mixer Guide (published 2026-04-03)
- Keep the final output below 0 dBFS, the digital full-scale maximum described by the OBS Project. Do not use the red region as a target; leave headroom for the combined mix and any later processing. OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details (published 2022-02-13)
The same technical guide describes -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum level in its meter design. These are meter design values, not universal program-level targets for every playlist or stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Lower the level at the earliest useful point
- First reduce the player volume or file-source level if you can control it there.
- Then lower the OBS source fader as needed. Adjust the source carrying the playlist, rather than an unrelated mixer channel.
- If other audio is mixed in, check the combined output as well as each source. Several individually safe sources can sum to an excessive overall level.
- Record a representative test segment and listen to the resulting file. Check for distortion, unexpectedly abrupt changes, and whether the playlist remains audible.
OBS’s mixer documentation explains how mixer levels and output levels relate in Audio Mixer Technical Details.
4. Add a Limiter if peaks still need control
- In the mixer, open the playlist source’s filter menu (or right-click the source and open its filters), then add the OBS Limiter.
- Set a ceiling below 0 dBFS so there is headroom. OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and release of 60 ms; treat these as software defaults to evaluate, not settings that suit every playlist.
- Move the Limiter to the last position in that source’s filter chain. The OBS Project’s Limiter Filter documentation says: “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.”
- Play the loudest material again, inspect the meter, and make another test recording. If clipping persists, verify the Limiter is on the source OBS captures and check whether the combined output or a later stage is overloading.
See the OBS Project’s Filters Guide for how to add and manage source filters.

5. Fix track-to-track loudness jumps separately
A Limiter caps peaks; it does not raise a quiet track to match a louder one. If playlist items vary substantially in loudness, level-match or normalize the files in an audio editor before playback, then check their loudest peaks again in OBS. The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish a playlist-specific YouTube LUFS target, so there is no single official OBS LUFS number to apply here.
A Compressor is a different tool for reducing dynamic peaks. Its behavior can also duck program or desktop audio when a microphone speaks, depending on how it is configured. It does not automatically make separately mastered songs equally loud. The OBS Project explains its controls in the Compressor Filter documentation.

Troubleshoot by where distortion enters
- The audio is already distorted before OBS processing: The source or player may be overloaded, or the original file may already be clipped. Lower the earliest controllable source level; if the file itself is clipped, use a clean master if available. Gain reduction cannot restore waveform detail that was clipped in the original.
- The playlist source meter peaks too high: Lower that source’s level or fader, then add a Limiter if needed. Confirm the filter is attached to the source being captured.
- Individual sources look safe, but the mix distorts: Check the combined recording or stream path. Multiple sources can sum to a higher overall level.
- Only some songs sound much louder: Level-match the files before playback. A Limiter alone does not equalize perceived loudness.
- Browser audio is missing or the wrong sound is captured: Check whether OBS is capturing the intended application or desktop audio source, then confirm that source’s meter responds during playback.
- The meter looks safe, but the recording sounds bad: Listen to a test recording rather than relying only on the source meter. Check the actual output path and any combined audio sources.
