Those comments described the family’s experience while the case was pending; they were not a medical assessment. The case has since resulted in a guilty plea, a prison sentence and McBee Sr.’s release.
What did Steven McBee Jr. say about the pressure?
In interviews with Bravo during the investigation, McBee Jr. described a stressful period for the family. He said, “It’s been a very, very stressful time for our family,” and likened the case to “sort of this cloud that’s been looming over us at all times.” He also said “this FBI investigation is wearing on my dad.”
Ahead of his father’s sentencing, McBee Jr. again described the uncertainty, saying the investigation had been “sort of this cloud that’s been hanging over us every second of every day since we first found out.” The “not been the same” characterization in the headline should be understood in this family context: Bravo’s interviews report McBee Jr.’s observations, not an independent or clinical finding about his father’s health. What was the FBI investigation about?
The investigation concerned federal crop insurance fraud. On November 5, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri announced that McBee Sr. had pleaded guilty to one count and admitted fraudulent activity from 2018 through 2020. According to the Justice Department, he admitted making false reports to crop insurers about the farm’s production.

The reported 2018 crop figures
The Justice Department said McBee reported 340,476 bushels of corn and 190,171 bushels of soybeans for 2018. It contrasted those reports with sales of more than 1.2 million bushels of corn and nearly 416,000 bushels of soybeans. The office said approximately 674,812 bushels of corn and 155,833 bushels of soybeans had been underreported. Its release also describes admitted insurance misrepresentations in 2019 and 2020. Insurance payments and loss figures
The Justice Department said the operation received $2,605,943 in crop insurance benefits and $552,980 in premium subsidies to which it was not entitled. It described the government’s total claimed loss as $4,022,123. These are distinct figures: the benefits and subsidies are not the same measure as the government’s stated total loss.

What happened to McBee Sr. after the plea?
Bravo’s 2026 case coverage reports that McBee Sr. was sentenced to 24 months in prison and two years of supervised release. It reports that the court ordered $4,022,124 in restitution. That restitution amount is one dollar higher than the $4,022,123 loss figure in the Justice Department’s 2024 plea announcement; the sources do not explain the difference, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Bravo reported on September 30, 2026, that McBee Sr. had been released on September 11 after serving nine months. In the same post-release coverage, he described adversity as “one of the things that you don’t expect in life but that you can take as one of those teachable moments in life and just learn from it.” That is his own retrospective account after release, separate from the earlier comments his son made during the investigation. How does the case fit into The McBee Dynasty?
The series is The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys. The family’s legal troubles became part of the show’s family-and-farm context: Peacock’s Season 2 cast preview described the investigation as looming over the family and said Steven Jr. was left in charge of the farm while his father was absent.
