Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use OBS Studio to send your stream to YouTube, and use OBS’s VLC Video source to play and loop a local music playlist. VLC handles playback; OBS handles the encoder connection. Before going live, confirm your channel is eligible, your music is licensed for live broadcast, and your upload connection and computer can stay available. A looping playlist is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
What VLC and OBS each do
VLC plays the files in a playlist; OBS places that playback in a scene and sends the scene to YouTube as an encoder. YouTube’s documented encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key, so looping music locally does not, by itself, create a YouTube livestream. See OBS’s media source documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Before you start
Check livestream access
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s livestream eligibility page.
Clear the music and visuals
Use music you have permission to broadcast publicly on YouTube. Buying a song or being able to play it privately does not establish livestream rights. Check the license terms for any third-party music and, where relevant, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the stream image, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. A “copyright free” label is not a substitute for checking the actual license. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Build and loop the music scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast. Add the artwork or other authorized visual source you want viewers to see.
- Add the playlist. In the scene’s Sources panel, choose + and add VLC Video. Add your local music files in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. Inspect Loop Playlist and leave it enabled to restart playback after the last file. OBS lists this setting as on by default, but verify it rather than relying on the default. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the order to vary.
- Keep the source visible. OBS documents visibility behavior that can stop playback when a source is hidden and restart it when visible. Avoid hiding the playlist source if its visibility setting would stop playback.
- Check the audio mix. Use the OBS audio mixer to confirm the playlist is audible and that unrelated desktop audio is not being sent by mistake.
For a single supported local file instead of a playlist, add OBS’s built-in Media Source and enable its Loop property, which is off by default. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its built-in audio formats, and MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among its video formats. See OBS’s media source reference for source options.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to enter the Live Control Room.
- Select an existing stream or create one. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, choose the encoder connection option that lets you enter a server URL and stream key. Paste in the values from YouTube and keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. Check that the feed appears in the Live Control Room preview and that its stream health is acceptable. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for YouTube’s preview and then select Go live in the Live Control Room.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions if the Studio or OBS labels have changed. VLC’s playlist source is a playback component, not a replacement for OBS’s YouTube encoder connection.

Choose encoder settings and test the feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to match your resolution and frame rate to the upload connection. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommended and no longer than four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. For stereo audio, its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain a continuous stream.
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s settings page accessed in 2026 lists 14 Mbps as recommended and 5 Mbps as the minimum. That figure applies to that codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not treat it as a universal bitrate. Consult YouTube’s current table for the setting that matches your chosen output.

- Test with audio and video representative of the planned broadcast, and use a private or otherwise controlled test where appropriate.
- Listen for silence, gaps between tracks, clipping, unwanted desktop audio, and abrupt playlist transitions.
- Check that the visual scene appears correctly in the YouTube preview and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Confirm that OBS continues playing through a playlist transition and that the next file is available at its expected location.
YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health while live. A playlist loop does not ensure that the computer, media files, power, software, or network will remain available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “24/7” means for a local setup
With VLC and OBS running locally, the host computer plays the media and sends the encoded feed over its internet connection. A shutdown, software failure, missing file, power interruption, or lost connection can interrupt the broadcast. This is a practical consequence of the setup, not a quantified uptime estimate. Monitor the stream and decide in advance how you will restart it if the feed drops.

Also plan separately for replays: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer will produce a complete automatic replay. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
Playback and hosting choices
| Choice | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with one file | Plays one supported local audio or video file; enable its Loop property. | Simpler for a single-file loop; loop is off by default. |
| OBS VLC Video with a playlist | Uses installed VLC to play a sequence of local files; inspect Loop Playlist and optional Shuffle Playlist. | Useful when you need multiple tracks; requires compatible VLC installation and the local files to remain available. |
| Local computer running OBS | Your computer runs playback and sends the stream to YouTube over your connection. | You control the machine and connection, but they must remain available for the stream to continue. |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Uploads prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud. | Nothing has to stay running on your home computer; its plan details are below. |
For another hosted option, YouTube’s verified encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuous streaming of prerecorded video. That listing does not establish an independent reliability comparison. See YouTube’s encoder setup and verified encoder list.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not load: install VLC and confirm that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops at the end: inspect Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source. For a single file, check the Media Source’s separate Loop property.
- Playback stops when switching scenes: check whether the source’s visibility behavior stops playback when hidden. Keep it visible or adjust the source behavior so it does not stop unexpectedly.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: confirm that OBS is using the correct server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room, and that the key has not been changed. Keep the key private.
- You cannot start a livestream: check channel verification, age eligibility, and recent live-stream restrictions. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- The stream is interrupted after starting: inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and review any copyright notice. A Content ID issue can interrupt even licensed music if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
- The stream drops or audio becomes unstable: check the host computer, file availability, OBS status, power, and upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder table to choose a bitrate appropriate to the output rather than assuming one setting fits every stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, without leaving a home computer or OBS running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details, or start your free first day.
