To play a prepared sequence of video files on a YouTube stream, give FFmpeg a playlist in its concat-demuxer format and send the output to the RTMPS ingest address and stream name for your broadcast. That creates one ordered input; it does not establish that editing the playlist during a live session will switch to new content. If you need live, operator-controlled switching, test the exact workflow with your FFmpeg build and files before relying on it.
Choose what you mean by “switch”
- Play a fixed sequence: List the files in playback order before starting FFmpeg. The concat demuxer presents them sequentially as one input.
- Repeat a fixed sequence: FFmpeg’s
-stream_loop -1can be used to repeat input indefinitely, with-reto read file input at its native rate. Treat a sample command using these options as a starting point, not a universal or tested configuration. - Change the playlist while streaming: The cited FFmpeg documentation does not establish whether edits to a list already being read take effect, or whether output remains continuous. Do not assume that changing the file guarantees a live switch.
- Cut over to another active source: That is a separate orchestration problem. A process restart or ingest-protocol change may interrupt continuity; the sources cited here do not validate a zero-interruption switching design.
Prepare and check a fixed playlist
- Create an ffconcat script. Put the header on the first line, then add one
fileentry per video, in the order you want them played. Use valid paths and the concat-script syntax documented by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.ffconcat version 1.0 file '/media/segment-a.mp4' file '/media/segment-b.mp4' - Check stream compatibility. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If those differ, do not assume the files can be joined cleanly without additional processing or re-encoding.
- Check duration metadata. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to set timestamps for the next file. Incorrect duration information can lead to timestamp gaps or other artifacts, so verify the metadata and inspect transitions in a test.
- Decide whether to loop. For a finite sequence, do not add an indefinite loop. For a repeated sequence, an example using
-stream_loop -1and-reis described by iTechGuides as an untested starting point; test it with your own files and FFmpeg build.
Send the output to YouTube
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the ingest details for the broadcast you intend to run. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes the ingestion address and assigned stream name; an encoder may take them separately or joined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Use the RTMPS address supplied for that broadcast. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; connecting with cleartext RTMP to a server expecting RTMPS can time out. See the RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Configure FFmpeg’s input and output options for your actual files, whether they need re-encoding, their audio and video streams, and the current ingest configuration. There is no universal command that is correct for every source and build. Keep the stream key private: do not publish it or leave a real key in a shared script.
- Start with a test broadcast and watch the result in Live Control Room. Confirm audio, video, file transitions, and stream health before depending on the sequence. The cited third-party example also recommends testing rather than treating its sample as universally reliable.
Ingest protocol changes are not a playlist-switching shortcut
YouTube explicitly says RTMP and DASH ingestion cannot be mixed during the same broadcast, including switching between them. Do not plan to change from one to the other mid-broadcast as a way to switch playlists; see the DASH ingestion guide.
HLS is another ingest option, but its requirements differ: YouTube’s documentation specifies HTTPS transport, muxed audio and video, media playlists rather than master playlists, and segment naming and sequence rules. HLS sends video in segments and is described as higher latency than continuous RTMP-like delivery; those requirements do not make it a simpler method for switching local FFmpeg inputs. See YouTube Help’s HLS setup page and the HLS ingestion guide.
Test the failure cases that matter
- A transition shows a timestamp jump or artifact: Check the duration metadata and time bases of adjacent files, then test corrected inputs.
- A file will not concatenate cleanly: Compare its streams, codecs, and time base with the other playlist files. The concat demuxer’s compatibility expectation does not cover mismatched layouts.
- The playlist edit does not change what is playing: An already-running process is not documented here as reloading a changed list. Prepare the sequence before launch, or validate a separate switching architecture rather than assuming a text-file edit is enough.
- YouTube connection times out: Verify that you used the broadcast’s supplied RTMPS address rather than cleartext RTMP when the server expects RTMPS, and check the address and stream name.
- Changing ingest protocol breaks the broadcast: RTMP and DASH cannot be mixed within one broadcast. Keep the chosen ingest protocol consistent for that session.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not switch live camera inputs.
