Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To loop one MP4 indefinitely on YouTube Live, place FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before -i, read the file in real time with -re, and send an FLV output to the RTMP or RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
FFmpeg command for looping one MP4
Use this as a starting template:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f flv 'rtmp[s]://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
- Replace
input.mp4with the path to your file. - Replace the destination placeholder with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The notation
rtmp[s]is a reminder to choose the RTMP or RTMPS URL YouTube provides; do not type it literally. -stream_loop -1requests infinite repetition of the input. It is an input option, so it belongs before-i.-repaces the file at its native rate instead of letting FFmpeg read it as quickly as possible.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacselect H.264 video and AAC audio encoding;-f flvsets the output format used by FFmpeg’s RTMP example.
This is a template, not a command verified against your particular MP4, FFmpeg build, account, or stream key. Your build must include the selected encoders, and your file must contain the streams the command expects. If it has no audio, or if you need different resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or stream mapping, adjust the command accordingly.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. The key authorizes the encoder to send its feed to YouTube; treat it like a password. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance explains the supported setup.
- Check the local file and FFmpeg build. Confirm the path and that FFmpeg can open the file. If the command reports an unknown encoder, check whether your installed build includes
libx264and AAC encoding. If it reports a missing stream, inspect the file and revise the audio or video mapping rather than assuming every MP4 has both. - Run the command. Keep
-stream_loop -1before-i, retain real-time pacing with-re, and use the exact destination values YouTube supplied. - Check the incoming preview. Watch Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health. If the stream is scheduled, YouTube says to click Go live after the preview appears. Test with representative movement and audio before relying on the stream.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop FFmpeg from sending content and use End Stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube’s documented automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams. YouTube’s live-streaming guide describes the duration guidance.
Choose compatible output settings
There is no single correct bitrate for every MP4 or channel. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match the output you intend to send, your upload capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations. YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table rather than guessing a bitrate.
For reference, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations list a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality; choose settings your connection can sustain. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.”

Check the loop and YouTube content rules
A command that repeats a file does not ensure a seamless edit at the loop point. Codec GOP structure, timestamps, audio boundaries, and the file itself can affect the transition. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, especially where the final frame and audio meet the start, and adapt or edit the source if the transition is disruptive.
Confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast the video and audio. Repeating a documentary, music track, or other recording does not grant permission to use it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content; a technically valid stream can still face a claim or other platform action.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The file plays once and stops | -stream_loop -1 is missing or placed after the input it should affect. |
Put it before -i input.mp4. |
| The stream races through the file or output timing is wrong | The local file is not being read at real-time speed. | Include -re before the input, as in the template. |
| FFmpeg reports an encoder or stream error | The build may not include the selected encoder, or the file may lack the assumed audio or video stream. | Check the installed FFmpeg capabilities and inspect the file’s streams; change the codec or mapping to match what is available. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The server URL or key may be wrong, stale, exposed, or paired with the wrong protocol. | Copy the current values from Live Control Room and use the exact RTMP or RTMPS destination provided. If the key may be compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg. |
| The preview reports poor or unstable stream health | The chosen output settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations or your available upload bandwidth. | Check YouTube’s current bitrate table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate; use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then test again. |
| There is a glitch at the repeat point | The file’s audio boundary, timestamps, or encoding may not join cleanly. | Inspect the transition in the preview and revise the source or encoding if needed; infinite looping alone does not make the cut seamless. |
