How to Change a Video Playlist Without Interrupting a YouTube Live Stream

Change the media playlist in OBS while keeping the YouTube encoder session active. VLC Video Source supports playlists, but rehearse edits because seamless playback is not guaranteed.

To change the videos going out on a YouTube Live broadcast, update the playlist or source in OBS while keeping the same encoder session connected. OBS’s VLC Video Source supports playlists, but neither OBS nor YouTube promises that editing one mid-stream will be invisible to viewers. Rehearse the exact change before using it on air.

What “changing the playlist” means

This guide covers changing the media files played by an encoder such as OBS while that encoder is already sending a continuous broadcast to YouTube Live. YouTube’s viewer queue is a separate feature: it affects a viewer’s watch session, not the outgoing video playlist for your live broadcast. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that a watch-page playlist can be replaced while preserving an active broadcast.

Prepare an OBS playlist for the live stream

  1. Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, open the scene that will carry the broadcast and add a VLC Video Source. Add the media files or paths to the source’s playlist. The source provides loop, shuffle, and visibility behavior controls; choose the behavior that suits the programme.
  3. Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and encoder connection using the stream key, server URL, and encoder settings for your broadcast. YouTube’s Live streaming encoder setup guidance covers these settings.
  4. Start the encoder session. Begin streaming from OBS and confirm that the broadcast is receiving the intended video and audio. Keep this encoder session active while changing the programming.

Change the playlist while the broadcast is live

  1. Stage the change. If your production uses a standby or transition scene, prepare it before editing the playlist. This can cover a reload or other visible change, but it does not guarantee a gap-free transition.
  2. Edit the VLC Video Source playlist in OBS. Add, remove, or reorder the items as needed. Leave the active encoder session connected to YouTube; do not stop and restart the broadcast merely to change the media queue.
  3. Return to the playlist source. If you used a standby scene, switch back after the source is ready. Check that the intended next item is playing and that its audio is present.
  4. Monitor the broadcast. Watch the live output for a blank frame, a media reload, an unintended restart, an audio discontinuity, or an item starting at the wrong point.

This approach follows OBS’s scene and source workflow alongside YouTube’s separate encoder connection. The official documentation describes those capabilities; it does not certify that every playlist edit will be seamless to viewers. Keeping the encoder session active avoids an intentional stream restart, but cannot guarantee zero visible or audible interruption.

Rehearse before changing a live programme

Test the exact source, media files, and OBS version you plan to use. A rehearsal should verify the playlist edit itself and the resulting programme output, rather than just confirming that the stream connects.

  • Look for blank frames or reloads when changing the playlist or switching scenes.
  • Verify loop, shuffle, and source visibility behavior before going live.

Common problems and what to check

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The wrong video plays next: Check the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. Rehearse the transition to confirm the next item and starting point.
  • Viewers see a blank frame or reload: The playlist edit may cause a visible source change. Use a prepared standby or transition scene and test the same edit beforehand; neither method guarantees no interruption.
  • The broadcast stops when you change videos: Check that you are editing the media source in OBS rather than stopping the encoder session. YouTube’s Live Control Room connection and the OBS playlist are separate parts of the setup.
  • The video changes but audio does not behave as expected: Check the VLC source’s audio and visibility behavior in the scene, then rehearse the transition while monitoring the outgoing programme.
