For the lowest-risk starting point, build your playlist from music downloaded through YouTube Studio’s Audio Library, and check each track’s attribution requirement. For music from any other source, verify that its license explicitly covers continuous YouTube live streaming, looping, archived streams, your territory and monetization. Then ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist: YouTube may interrupt a live stream using licensed music if the channel is not allowlisted.
No source or license makes a playlist “claim-proof.” YouTube’s guidance reduces uncertainty, but it is not a legal determination for every country or a guarantee that a live broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
Choose music based on the rights you need
A playlist for a 24/7 channel has to work in a use case that a download, credit or ordinary video license may not cover. Check rights for the live transmission and the recording viewers may watch afterward, as well as repeat use, territories and monetization. YouTube says Content ID can flag music it does not recognize as properly licensed. YouTube’s guidance on finding safe music describes safe music as public-domain music or music used with permission from the copyright owner.
Compare the main music sources
| Source | What it offers | What to check for an always-on stream |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Audio Library | YouTube identifies music and sound effects downloaded from the Library as copyright-safe for YouTube videos. Track details show whether attribution is required. | Check each track’s attribution setting and include the required text for Creative Commons tracks. The platform guidance does not settle legal questions or rights for uses outside the applicable terms. YouTube Audio Library guidance |
| Creator Music | Track-specific licenses or revenue-sharing terms for eligible videos. | Do not use its licenses as permission for a live stream: YouTube says Creator Music licenses do not cover live content. Its documented availability is for U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion beyond the U.S. pending. Terms and territories vary; YouTube’s guidance also describes single-use terms for licensed tracks. Creator Music FAQ and Creator Music usage details |
| Third-party royalty-free or paid catalog | May provide music if the actual license grants the rights required for the channel’s use. | “Royalty-free” or paid does not itself establish live, repeat-use, archive, territory or monetization rights. Ask about Content ID allowlisting before broadcasting. YouTube safe-music guidance and live-stream copyright guidance |
| Music you create | YouTube recognizes music created by the channel as a possible route. | Make sure every contributor and the rights to both the composition and recording are cleared for the intended use. YouTube’s general guidance does not specify the terms of a particular production agreement. YouTube safe-music guidance |
| Public-domain or Creative Commons music | May be usable depending on the applicable status or license. | Verify the composition and recording rights where relevant, applicable attribution and license conditions, and the jurisdiction. YouTube says none of its listed routes guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. YouTube copyright guidance |
Build and document the playlist
1. Start in YouTube Studio’s Audio Library
- Open YouTube Studio and select Audio Library.
- Search and filter by genre, mood, duration and attribution to find tracks suited to the channel and its loop.
- Open each track’s details and confirm whether it requires attribution. The Library includes Creative Commons tracks that require credit and tracks with no attribution requirement. YouTube says only music and sound effects from its Audio Library are known to it as copyright-safe. Read YouTube’s Audio Library guidance.
2. Keep a rights record for every track
Record the title, artist, source or download, license or usage terms, required attribution and any restrictions. Keep the track details and permission records with the channel’s production records. This is practical recordkeeping, not a form YouTube requires.

3. Add required attribution
For a Creative Commons track from the Audio Library, copy the attribution text from the track’s license panel and include it in the video description as required. A “Music in this video” section does not replace required attribution.
4. Check every term if using an outside source
Read the actual license rather than relying on a “free,” “royalty-free” or “licensed” label. Confirm that it names or permits your intended use, including:

- Continuous YouTube live transmission and repeating or looping the track.

- Monetized use, if you intend to monetize.
- Your relevant territories, the specific channel and any other platforms you intend to use.
- Required attribution, license duration, cancellation terms and any limits on reuse.
- Rights to both the underlying composition and the sound recording, where they are held separately.
- How the provider handles Content ID, including whether it can add your channel to an allowlist.
These are the practical questions to resolve for an always-on use case; a license’s actual scope controls.
5. Get allowlisted before relying on licensed music
Ask the music owner or provider to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before you go live. Save written confirmation and test the licensed setup with a short stream. YouTube warns that a live stream may be interrupted even when you have licensed third-party content if the channel is not on the owner’s allowlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

6. Monitor the live stream and its archive
Keep an eye on YouTube Studio while the broadcast is live, then check again after it ends. Live detection can interrupt a broadcast, and a Content ID claim may appear on the archived stream afterward.
What YouTube’s checks mean—and do not mean
Live streams are scanned for third-party content. Depending on the situation, YouTube may show a warning, replace the content, interrupt the stream or terminate it. A warning or an interruption is a platform enforcement event; holding a license does not necessarily prevent it if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube’s live copyright guidance

Copyright exceptions and public-domain status depend on the relevant jurisdiction and the specific facts. YouTube lists possible routes to use copyrighted material, but does not guarantee that any route will prevent a claim or strike. For uncertain rights, get advice from a qualified legal professional in the relevant jurisdiction. YouTube copyright guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a track is flagged or the stream is interrupted
- Stop using the track while you investigate. Check the claim or live notification, your saved license terms, and any written allowlist confirmation.
- Contact the rights owner or provider. Confirm that the license covers live looping and the archive, and ask whether your exact channel is allowlisted.
- Do not treat a description credit as permission. Attribution does not expand a license, and YouTube says a description does not override Content ID detection. YouTube safe-music guidance
- Do not assume a dispute alone resolves the rights question. Use a dispute only when you have a valid basis and supporting records; if permission is unclear, replace the track with music whose terms you can verify.
- Check the archive as well as the live event. A stream that was not interrupted may still receive a Content ID claim after ending.
