A rejected Content ID dispute is not itself a copyright strike, and it does not mean a counter notification was rejected.
The options below describe YouTube’s process and, where noted, U.S. copyright procedures. If you are outside the United States, check the laws and notice procedures that apply in your jurisdiction. This is general information, not a decision about whether your particular use is lawful.
Identify what YouTube rejected
Open YouTube Studio and inspect the video’s copyright details, then compare the status with the wording in YouTube’s email. The word “dispute” is often used loosely, but the remedies depend on which process you are in.

YouTube says claimants have up to 30 days to respond to an initial Content ID dispute and seven days to respond to an appeal. A rejected appeal can be followed by a copyright removal request. See YouTube’s guidance on Content ID disputes and appeals.

If your Content ID dispute was rejected
Check whether an appeal is available
The rejected dispute leaves the Content ID claim in place. If you own or have licensed the material, believe the claimant has identified the wrong content, or have a sound basis for a copyright exception, check Studio to see whether you can appeal and what deadline applies. Do not appeal simply because you disagree with the claim: an appeal may lead the claimant to seek removal of the video.
Weigh the risk before appealing
If the appeal is rejected, the claimant can submit a copyright removal request. If that request is valid, YouTube removes the video and applies a strike. Review the claim against your evidence—such as a licence, permission, ownership records, or the specific legal basis for an exception—before deciding. YouTube advises creators who are unsure about an appeal decision to seek legal advice.

If an appeal was rejected or a takedown is scheduled
Read the notice for the precise removal date and any action window. YouTube says that when a removal request is scheduled after an appeal, you have seven days to act. During that period, you can cancel the appeal to avoid a strike; the Content ID claim remains active. You can also try to obtain a retraction from the claimant. Check the notice and Studio for the available action and deadline: YouTube’s copyright removal request guidance.
If the seven-day scheduled-removal period has passed and the video has been removed with a strike, deleting the video does not resolve the ordinary strike. A scheduled takedown is different: acting within its seven-day window may prevent the strike.

If YouTube rejected your counter notification
Use the rejection email to identify the omission
A counter notification is a legal request, not another ordinary Content ID appeal. YouTube says it emails the reason when a submission lacks required information and allows you to submit a new counter notification containing all legally required information. Correct the stated omission rather than sending the same incomplete form again. YouTube’s process is described in its copyright removal request help and its counter notification instructions.
Submit one only if you have a genuine basis
YouTube says to submit a counter notification only if you believe the removal happened because of a mistake or misidentification. That may include a case where you believe an exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain applies, but whether an exception covers your specific use depends on the facts and relevant law. A counter notification is shared with the claimant. If you are concerned about disclosing personal information, YouTube says an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit it for you.

Know what happens after a valid counter notification
If YouTube accepts and forwards a valid counter notification, YouTube says the claimant has 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. If it does not receive that evidence, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless you deleted it. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the Section 512 restoration period as not less than 10 and not more than 14 business days after receipt of a counter notice, absent the specified notice of court action. These are related but distinct descriptions: YouTube’s operational timeline should not be confused with the statutory window. See the Copyright Office’s Section 512 resource and 17 U.S.C. § 512.

YouTube identifies three relevant routes: ask the claimant to retract the removal request, submit a valid counter notification if the removal was mistaken or an exception applies, or complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire.

- Request a retraction: Contact the person or entity that submitted the removal request and ask them to withdraw it. YouTube does not control whether the claimant agrees.
- Consider a counter notification: Use this legal route only if you believe the removal was mistaken or misidentified, and provide the required information.
- Complete Copyright School and wait: YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Expiry clears the strike; it does not restore the removed video.

Livestream-specific consequences
YouTube says that if an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel can receive a strike and lose live-streaming access for seven days. A Content ID claim on an archived livestream typically does not itself create a strike. Confirm whether the notice concerns the live broadcast or its archived recording; the stage changes the consequence and the available response. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
When to get legal advice
Consider speaking with a copyright lawyer if a counter notification could expose you to legal action, the rights or licence are disputed, the use depends on a copyright exception, or the financial or channel consequences are significant. The U.S. Copyright Office describes federal court and the voluntary Copyright Claims Board as possible routes for certain U.S. copyright disputes; it states that the Board handles disputes up to $30,000 total. Those routes are not suitable or available for every dispute, and that ceiling is not a prediction of what a claim is worth or what result you will get. Jurisdiction, deadlines, the type of claim, and the evidence matter. See the Copyright Office’s Section 512 resource.
Prevent another livestream copyright problem
Before broadcasting or archiving a documentary stream, verify that you have the rights to every audiovisual element, including music, clips, photographs, and third-party footage. Keep licences and permissions where you can retrieve them, and do not assume that credit, non-commercial intent, or a short excerpt automatically makes a use lawful. If you receive a new notice, identify whether it is a Content ID claim or a removal request before choosing a response.
