YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content and can warn the creator, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A standard Content ID claim on an archived livestream is made after the stream ends. YouTube Studio may then offer tools to mute audio in the recording—not to repair audio on the stream while it is live.
What can happen while the livestream is live?
YouTube says all livestreams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If a match is detected, a placeholder image may replace the stream and YouTube may warn you to stop using the content. If the issue is addressed, the stream can continue. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also lead to termination. YouTube Help: live stream content restrictions
That can make a live broadcast appear silent if it has been replaced by a static image with no sound. It is not the same thing as YouTube muting only the audio track under an ordinary Content ID claim.
Live Content ID matching is a distinct process
Eligible rights owners can use live Content ID matching to detect copies of their own live content. YouTube describes a sequence in which a continuing match can trigger a warning, replacement of the stream with a static image without sound, and then termination. YouTube distinguishes this live matching from standard Content ID: live matching does not create ordinary claims, while standard Content ID claims apply to matching videos and follow the rights owner’s policy. When does a Content ID claim appear on an archived livestream?
If you choose to archive a livestream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. Depending on the claim, the recording may be blocked, restricted, or affected in monetization. Outcomes can vary by geography. YouTube Help: Content ID claims
For a claimed song in an archived video, YouTube Studio may offer “Erase song,” which attempts to remove the claimed song while preserving other audio, or “Mute all sound in the claimed segments.” YouTube says muting all sound is usually faster and more likely to remove the claim automatically; if claimed audio remains, the claim will not be removed. These tools edit the archive, not an in-progress livestream. YouTube Help: remove claimed content from videos

As of June 2025, YouTube Help says saved edits in Studio Editor can no longer be undone with the previous “Revert to original” feature. Keep a copy of the recording and review the proposed edit before saving if you may need the unedited version.
How the different copyright outcomes compare
| Situation | When | Possible consequence | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party match during a livestream | While live | Warning, placeholder, temporary interruption, or termination | Stop or remove the identified content; check Studio if the stream is interrupted. |
| Licensed content, but channel is not allowlisted | While live | The stream may still be interrupted | Ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. |
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | After the stream ends, if archived | Availability or monetization may be affected; Studio audio edits may be available | Review the claim and the archive editing options. |
| Copyright removal request | After a rights holder requests removal | If valid, the video can be removed and the channel can receive a strike | Review the notice and use formal response options only with a valid basis. |
What to do if your livestream goes silent or stops
- If it is still live, check YouTube’s warning. Stop or remove the identified third-party content. If you have a license, contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel; a license alone does not guarantee the stream will avoid interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- If the stream has stopped, check YouTube Studio. Look for a strike, restriction, or other notice that explains the interruption.
- If the archived recording has a claim, open its claim details in Studio. Review whether erase, mute, trim, or replacement actions are available. Preserve a copy before saving an edit you may not be able to reverse.
- Dispute only when you have a valid basis. Examples include having the necessary rights, relying on a copyright exception, or believing the match is mistaken. Giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize is not enough by itself.
Claim, strike, and dispute: what is the difference?
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike. A claim can lead to blocking, monetization by a rights holder, or viewership tracking. A strike follows removal of a video after a valid copyright removal request. YouTube Help: Content ID claims YouTube Help: copyright strikes

YouTube says the claimant—not YouTube—reviews an initial dispute and an appeal because YouTube cannot determine ownership. The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute and 7 days to respond to an appeal. An appeal can lead to a copyright removal request; if that request is valid, the video may be removed and the channel may receive a strike. Use the process only if you are confident you have the rights or another sound legal basis. YouTube Help: dispute a Content ID claim YouTube Help: appeal a Content ID claim
