You dispute a Content ID claim on an archived livestream in YouTube Studio—not while the broadcast is running. On a computer, open YouTube Studio → Content, find the claimed video, select See details under its restrictions, then choose Take action → Dispute for the relevant claim. Submit only if you have a good-faith basis, such as the necessary rights, an applicable copyright exception, or a mistaken match. A live interruption is a separate event, and filing a dispute does not promise that an interrupted broadcast will resume.
Know whether you have a live interruption or an archive claim
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. Its guidance says: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
That means the standard Content ID dispute flow generally applies to the archived video after the stream ends. If YouTube detects third-party content during a broadcast, it may temporarily replace, interrupt, or terminate the stream. That operational interruption is not itself the archived video’s Content ID claim, and a later dispute does not guarantee that the live broadcast will be restored.
Before disputing, check that you have a valid basis
YouTube identifies three general grounds for disputing a claim: you have the necessary rights, your use qualifies for a copyright exception, or the claim is a mistake, such as a mistaken match. You are responsible for assessing your basis. YouTube says, “Ultimately, YouTube can’t decide whether you should dispute a claim.” YouTube Help: Dispute a copyright claim – Computer

- Rights: You own or have permission to use the material in the way it appears in the stream and archive.
- Copyright exception: You believe an exception recognized by the applicable law covers your particular use. The rules vary by jurisdiction; a claim alone does not establish whether an exception applies.
- Misidentification: The system matched material that is not the claimant’s content or otherwise identified your use incorrectly.
Giving credit, buying a copy of a song or film, or choosing not to monetize the video does not by itself establish permission or make a use authorized. If you are unsure about your rights or the law that applies, consider getting legal advice before submitting a dispute.
Dispute the archived livestream in YouTube Studio
YouTube’s computer instructions use this route; labels and available actions can vary with the claim and account. Review the current claim details in Studio before proceeding.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Open Content in the left menu and locate the archived livestream with the claim.
- In the video’s Restrictions column, hover over Claims and select See details.
- Find the particular claimed material, then select Take action → Dispute.
- Review the claim information, select the ground that accurately describes your case, and provide the requested explanation or supporting details. Submit only if your stated basis is genuine and you can stand behind it.
The dispute is reviewed by the claimant. YouTube’s guidance does not treat the process as a decision by YouTube on who owns the material or whether your use qualifies for an exception.
What happens after you submit
Initial dispute

If the claim is reinstated
You may be able to appeal a rejected dispute. YouTube gives the claimant 7 days to respond to an appeal. Certain blocking claims may have a direct appeal option; check the options shown for your specific claim. An appeal has greater takedown risk than an initial dispute: the claimant may submit a copyright removal request, and if that request is valid, YouTube removes the video and issues a copyright strike. A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike. Do not treat every claim as a strike or assume that a claim alone means your channel is at risk of termination. The removal request after an appeal is the point at which a valid request can result in a strike.

Understand the revenue effect while a dispute is active
If you dispute within five days of the claim, YouTube says revenue is held starting from the claim date. If you dispute later, revenue is held starting from the date you submit the dispute. While a claim dispute or appeal is active, revenue data for that video is not shown in YouTube Analytics. These are YouTube’s platform rules, and the five-day threshold determines the holdback start date; it is not a promise about whether revenue will ultimately be paid. Prevent avoidable interruptions on future streams
If you have licensed music or other third-party content for future broadcasts, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not stop automated live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Confirm what the license covers—including livestreaming and archived video—and get the allowlisting arrangement from the rights owner. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
