First schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then configure and test the separate encoder workflow. For a reliable schedule, verify the host’s cron implementation and timezone rather than assuming that “IST” means the same thing to every system.
What “schedule a YouTube Live playlist” means
There are two different tasks that can sound like scheduling a playlist:
- Schedule a YouTube Live event and send it media: create an upcoming event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or playback process to send its feed. This is the documented workflow in YouTube’s encoder instructions and Live stream settings.
- Ask YouTube to broadcast an existing channel playlist as a live stream: the cited YouTube instructions do not document native scheduled playlist-to-live playback. Cron cannot add that capability; it only launches a command on the Ubuntu host.
The steps below cover the first workflow: YouTube hosts the scheduled event, while Ubuntu starts the process that supplies its media.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s live streaming overview says channels must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet a minimum age of 16. Check the current page and your account because eligibility and interface rules can change.
- A scheduled YouTube Live event and its stream URL and stream key.
- An Ubuntu host with the media, encoder or playback script, network access, and permissions needed to send the feed.
- A known schedule timezone. For India, use the IANA name
Asia/Kolkatawhere supported, rather than relying on the abbreviation “IST.” - A tested end-to-end launch path. A cron entry firing does not prove the encoder connected or that YouTube is receiving the feed.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and choose Manage.
- Schedule a stream and set the event details and start time. YouTube describes the scheduled event as an upcoming stream/watch page that can be promoted and may give viewers reminders.
- Open the event’s stream settings and note the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not place it in a public script, repository, or log.
- Confirm how this event/account behaves when an encoder connects. YouTube’s documented flow includes checking the preview and choosing Go live; do not assume that connecting the encoder automatically starts the public broadcast.

Choose how cron will interpret India time
A cron schedule uses five time fields, and cron runs the command as the crontab owner. The timezone is determined by the host and cron implementation unless that implementation supports a timezone setting. The Ubuntu Noble crontab manpage documents CRON_TZ for the cronie implementation; that does not establish that every Ubuntu host’s installed cron daemon supports it. Option 1: Use CRON_TZ if the installed daemon supports it
Check the installed cron package and its manpage before adding this variable. If the daemon supports the documented setting, a per-user crontab entry for a daily run at 8:30 p.m. India time could look like this:

CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata
30 20 * * * /usr/local/bin/start-youtube-playlist-stream >> /var/log/youtube-stream.log 2>&1This is an illustrative schedule, not a tested command. Replace the script path and log location with valid paths on your host, and ensure the crontab owner can execute the script and write to the log. Cron’s five fields are minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week; here, 30 20 * * * means every day at 20:30 in the cron table’s applicable timezone.
Option 2: Keep the host timezone as the schedule basis
If the daemon does not support CRON_TZ, either set the machine timezone to Asia/Kolkata if that is appropriate for the host, or convert the desired India time to the host’s timezone and use that converted clock time in cron. Consider whether other services depend on the machine timezone before changing it. Verify the system clock, timezone, and next expected run; do not assume a conversion remains correct if the host timezone changes.

Use the right crontab format
The example above is for a per-user crontab, which does not include a username field. If you put the job in /etc/crontab or an /etc/cron.d/ file, include the required username field in the schedule line. Consult the applicable Ubuntu crontab documentation before choosing the file format.
Make the scheduled command work unattended
Cron launches a non-interactive command, not a logged-in desktop session. Make the script self-contained and explicit about what it needs:

- Use absolute paths for the script, media files, encoder, and any configuration files.
- Set or define the working directory inside the script rather than relying on the shell’s starting directory.
- Provide any required environment variables in a controlled way; cron may not inherit the environment available in your terminal.
- Ensure the crontab owner has permission to read the source media, run the encoder, and write logs.
- Protect the YouTube stream key. Avoid putting it in public code or logging it; restrict access to any file that stores credentials.
- Capture standard output and errors so failures can be diagnosed. Check that the chosen log location is writable and has enough space over time.

Test the event and cron job before relying on them
- Run the exact script manually as the same account that owns the crontab. Confirm it can access the media and starts the encoder with the intended event’s stream settings.
- Schedule a test at a near-future time and confirm the cron daemon launches the command. Inspect the configured output log and the host’s cron logs as appropriate for your Ubuntu setup.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming feed and preview. YouTube recommends starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event; follow its live streaming tips.
- Complete the Go live action if the event’s workflow requires it. Confirm the public watch page is receiving the intended media before depending on an unattended run.
- Test what happens if the encoder exits, loses network access, or encounters an invalid key. A cron launch alone does not establish that the stream reconnects or that YouTube begins broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common scheduling failures

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Scheduling a stream does not establish rights to its video or music, nor does it guarantee monetization or policy compliance. Before broadcasting a playlist or other prerecorded media, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the material and review YouTube’s current rules for live streams and reused content. The YouTube pages cited here explain event and encoder setup, not whether a particular playlist is permitted or eligible for monetization.
