In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream, copy its stream key, then enter it in OBS at Settings > Stream. For a low-end PC, start with H.264 at 480p30, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s current guidance recommends 3 Mbps for that setting. Test before going live, and leave about 20% upload-speed headroom above the stream bitrate. These are starting points, not a guarantee: your PC, scene and actual upload connection determine what will run reliably.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Create or select the live stream you intend to broadcast. Follow any live-streaming eligibility or activation prompts shown in your account.
- Copy the stream key. In the stream’s Live Control Room settings, copy the key YouTube provides. It tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube explains stream settings and key management in its live stream settings guide.
- Enter it in OBS. Open OBS and choose Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter or paste the stream key in the key field. Avoid sharing screenshots or recordings that reveal it.
- Set output and video options. Choose the conservative settings below, then apply them before starting the stream. Menu labels can vary slightly by OBS version and selected output mode.
- Test the full setup. Use the actual scene, audio sources and representative movement you plan to stream. Check OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup for a public broadcast.
If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. Do not assume that hiding or deleting a screenshot makes a compromised key safe.
Choose a bitrate and video settings that a modest PC can handle
YouTube’s recommendations below are for H.264 ingestion, not measurements of what every low-end computer or Indian internet connection can sustain. Its encoder settings guidance lists:
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | Try this first on a constrained PC or connection. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Move up only if the computer and upload path remain stable. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Usually a less conservative choice for a low-end PC; test before using it. |
OBS settings to start with
- Encoder: H.264. If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder for your GPU, test it; otherwise use an available software encoder at a workload your CPU can sustain.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended by YouTube for the listed ingestion settings.
- Bitrate: Start at the recommendation for your chosen output, but reduce it if your tested connection cannot sustain it. The minimum figures are not a promise of acceptable visual quality.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Start with 480p30 if resources are tight. If testing is stable, try 720p30. Do not raise resolution and frame rate at the same time; changing one factor at a time makes failures easier to diagnose.
Check upload capacity, not just download speed
YouTube recommends roughly 20% more upload capacity than the total stream bitrate. For example, a 3 Mbps stream calls for about 3.6 Mbps of available upload capacity as headroom, not merely a download result of that size. This is approximate guidance, and other devices or people sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS. Check the upload path you will actually use and test with the stream running; YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection preparation.

- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Reduce the workload on an older computer
Try a compatible hardware encoder
If OBS lists a supported GPU hardware encoder, test it. Hardware encoding can move video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component on the graphics hardware, but which options appear depends on the installed GPU and system support. Do not assume that a particular encoder—such as NVENC, Quick Sync or AMD AMF—is available. OBS also notes that older hardware encoder generations can trade image quality for performance. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
Lower output demands and simplify the scene
If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, reduce resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary animated or resource-intensive scene elements, and limit competing GPU work. If 60 fps is not working, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. Basic system requirements alone do not guarantee streaming capability: encoder choice, output settings and scene complexity all affect performance. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting and system requirements.

Diagnose dropped frames and overload separately
“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. Check OBS statistics and the warning or counter shown there before changing settings. Network drops and encoding or rendering overload need different fixes.
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped frames or an unstable connection warning | Upload capacity, congestion or the network route between the PC and YouTube. | Lower the bitrate, check whether other users or devices are consuming upload capacity, and test the connection again. If the wireless link itself appears unstable and both PC and router support it, try wired Ethernet as a troubleshooting comparison; it cannot fix insufficient upload capacity. |
| Encoding overload or rendering lag | CPU/GPU workload, output resolution or frame rate, encoder choice, or scene complexity. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, try 30 fps, simplify the scene, reduce competing GPU work, or test a compatible hardware encoder. |
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as an option that can lower bitrate during network congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce quality. Use it only as a mitigation, not as a substitute for finding a stable upload path. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide provides further network checks. Keep YouTube’s stream-health display open during the test and resolve warnings before depending on the stream.

Check rights and YouTube live-stream rules before broadcasting
Use content you own or have permission to stream, including music, documentary footage, photographs and other people’s video. A stream key and a technically healthy OBS connection do not grant content rights. Check the permissions and terms that apply to every asset, and review YouTube’s current policies in Studio before scheduling a public stream. Copyright claims or other policy action can interrupt a broadcast or affect a channel.
For prerecorded material, permission to use the content is separate from whether a channel qualifies for monetization. Reused-content decisions depend on YouTube’s monetization policies and the channel’s overall content; simply placing existing footage in an OBS scene does not establish that it is original or eligible. Review the current policy rather than assuming that a technically successful stream will be monetizable.
