YouTube Stream Health Warning for Variable Frame Rate Video: FFmpeg Fix

A VFR label is not a diagnosis. Check YouTube’s exact warning, convert footage to a deliberate constant frame rate with FFmpeg when needed, and test the live ingest against current encoder guidance.

If YouTube Live warns about your video’s frame rate, first check the exact warning and the file’s timestamps. When variable frame rate (VFR) is the cause, convert the video to a deliberate constant frame rate (CFR) with FFmpeg, verify the result, then match your live encoder to the YouTube event settings. A VFR label alone does not prove that frame timing caused the warning, and there is no single command that fixes every health issue.

Diagnose the warning before changing the video

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the full stream-health message and note when it appeared. A frame-rate warning calls for a different response than a bitrate, keyframe, timestamp, resolution, or connection warning. A healthy-looking file encode also does not prove that YouTube’s live ingest is healthy.

Inspect the source with a media-information tool. Record its dimensions, video and audio codecs, reported frame rate, and—if available—average frame rate and time-base behavior. Phone and screen recordings can have variable timestamps, but where a recording came from does not establish that VFR caused YouTube’s warning.

Choose a target frame rate

Choose a cadence that suits the event and the content, then use the same resolution and frame rate in the output and the YouTube event or custom stream-key settings. Do not assume every source should become 30 fps: motion, encoder capacity, bitrate needs, and upload capacity all matter. A large change in cadence can affect motion smoothness because CFR conversion may drop or duplicate frames.

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommendations can change, so consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate before a broadcast.

Convert VFR footage to CFR with FFmpeg

For an offline file you can inspect before going live, FFmpeg’s fps video filter makes the target cadence explicit. The example below converts to 30 fps and re-encodes the video:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30" -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output-cfr.mp4

Replace 30 with the frame rate selected for your event. This is an illustrative offline conversion, not a universal preset tested for every source. The crf option is a quality-based file-encoding choice; live YouTube ingest calls for a suitable bitrate mode and target instead. Check your local FFmpeg build for the encoder you intend to use. Applying the filter requires video encoding, so do not combine it with -c:v copy, which copies the original video without applying a frame-rate filter.

Another documented approach is to request constant-frame-rate output mode:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -r 30 -fps_mode cfr -c:a aac output-cfr.mp4

FFmpeg documents -fps_mode cfr as dropping or duplicating frames to reach the requested constant rate. Use one clear conversion method, then inspect the result. Exact behavior depends on the FFmpeg version, muxer, input timestamps, and target; avoid combining timing flags casually. FFmpeg’s auto mode selects CFR or VFR according to muxer capabilities, so request CFR explicitly when that is your goal. See the official FFmpeg filter documentation and FFmpeg command documentation.

Match the live encoder to YouTube’s ingest guidance

For RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its keyframe-frequency recommendation is 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s listed settings, not independent measurements of the upload speed your connection can sustain; choose a rate your connection can maintain and confirm the current table before going live.

Verify the file and test the live path

  1. Inspect the converted file: check its cadence, dimensions, audio, and playback. Listen and watch for audio sync problems.
  2. Check every playlist item: if you are streaming a playlist, inspect each file and its transitions for consistent media properties.
  3. Configure the live encoder: match the YouTube event’s resolution and frame rate, then set a supported codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval using the current YouTube guidance.
  4. Test before the event: send a private or unlisted test feed with movement and audio representative of the planned stream. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring its health messages.
  5. Read the next timestamped message: check whether the warning changed or cleared. If viewers also report playback problems, check viewer playback separately; ingest health and an individual viewer’s playback are different parts of the chain.

For real-time conversion rather than an offline file, the same CFR principle applies, but a working live command also needs correct real-time input handling, audio mapping, codec and rate control, keyframe/GOP settings, an RTMP(S) destination, and any stream-key requirements. Those details depend on the pipeline. Never publish a real stream key: it is a credential.

Common causes and fixes

  • The warning persists after conversion: check that the output and event use the same cadence and resolution, and confirm the exact health message. The issue may instead concern bitrate, keyframes, timestamps, or connection stability.
  • Motion looks less smooth: the selected target may differ substantially from the source cadence. Choose a target appropriate to the content and event; CFR conversion achieves regular timing by dropping or duplicating frames.
  • Audio and video drift apart: inspect the converted file and deliberate audio handling before testing the live feed. Do not assume a cadence change alone has fixed synchronization.
  • A filtered command fails or the output is unexpected: check the installed FFmpeg version and available encoders, use one conversion method, and inspect the output rather than assuming flags behave identically across muxers and timestamps.
  • The file plays correctly but live health is poor: verify the live encoder’s bitrate mode, sustainable target bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and network path. A successful offline encode is not a live-ingest test.

For YouTube health-message troubleshooting beyond frame-rate conversion, see StreamNeo’s guide to YouTube Studio stream-health warnings; use YouTube and FFmpeg documentation as the authorities for ingest settings and command behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
