To check the full path, publish a short test to the event’s current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
What FFprobe can—and cannot—check
FFprobe reports information about media, such as its streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate and channel layout. It is useful for finding a broken or unexpected local source before you troubleshoot YouTube.
A successful local probe does not test DNS, your firewall or proxy, TLS, YouTube’s server acceptance, the stream key, YouTube-side processing or viewer playback. A TCP port check would be narrower still: it would not prove that an RTMP publish or video feed is valid. The decisive practical test is to publish to the intended event and verify receipt in Live Control Room.
Protect the stream key and get the current endpoint
Open the intended scheduled or test stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy that event’s server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration; YouTube directs encoder users to retrieve these values there. Use the endpoint for the protocol you intend to use, rather than relying on a URL copied from an old guide. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Treat the stream key as a password. Do not expose it in public logs, tickets, screen recordings or shared shell transcripts. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.
Check the local input with FFprobe
For a media file
Run FFprobe against the file you plan to stream:
ffprobe -hide_banner -v error -show_format -show_streams input.mp4Check that the expected video and audio streams appear. Note the codecs, video dimensions and frame rate, and the audio sample rate and channel layout where relevant. If FFprobe cannot open the file or an expected stream is missing, resolve that local input issue before investigating YouTube connectivity. For a live capture source
Use the device-input syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build and operating system. The file command above is not portable to cameras, capture cards or other live devices. A successful probe of a file also says nothing about whether a separate production scene has the right camera, microphone or routing.

Publish a controlled test live stream
Where appropriate for the channel, use a private or unlisted test event and a short sample that represents the real stream: include moving video and audio if both will be present in production. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, trying a test live stream and checking the preview before starting the event. See YouTube streaming tips.

FFmpeg’s generic RTMP publishing pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'Replace the example URL with the exact server URL and key supplied for the target event, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the required protocol and codecs. This is an illustrative command shape, not a tested command for a particular operating system, build, source or current YouTube endpoint. Avoid putting a real key into shell history or diagnostic output. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing and protocol URL behavior at FFmpeg protocols; its documentation identifies 1935 as RTMP’s default port, but YouTube’s current event configuration is authoritative for the endpoint.
If you use RTMPS, obtain the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room and use a compatible client. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL/TLS connection. YouTube’s guidance explains the secure option and troubleshooting, including verifying that both the protocol and server are RTMPS and trying port 443 for an SSL error: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. Changing only the URL scheme may not fix an incompatible client or incorrect endpoint.

Using a generated test pattern
FFmpeg’s lavfi input can generate synthetic video when supported by the installed build and filters. This can check an encode-and-ingest path without a media file, but it does not exercise the camera, microphone, capture card or production scene. Pick the input that tests the component you suspect.
Verify YouTube received the stream
Wait for the event preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check stream-health status and messages, and confirm that the preview has the expected motion and audio. A connection attempt or handshake alone is not evidence of a healthy event.

For an end-to-end check, also inspect the event and its viewer/watch page. Preview demonstrates that YouTube is receiving a feed it can render, but separate problems can still affect playback, sound or quality. Choose the test that matches the failure

Fix common test failures
FFprobe cannot open the source or expected tracks are absent
Check the file, capture-device permissions and local FFmpeg input configuration. This points to a source-side problem; it is not evidence of a YouTube network failure.
FFprobe succeeds but the publisher cannot connect
Check the event-specific server URL and protocol, the key for the correct event, outbound network access, firewall or proxy policy, and whether the installed FFmpeg build supports the required protocol. Review encoder output without sharing the key. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests refreshing a stream key if the encoder cannot start and checking outbound internet strength: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
RTMPS reports an SSL error or the connection times out
For an SSL error, verify that the URL and server use RTMPS, check that the client supports RTMPS, and try port 443 if the endpoint otherwise appears correct. For a timeout, recheck the current URL and protocol and the client’s RTMPS support. A timeout by itself does not identify whether the cause is network access, endpoint configuration or client capability. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

The key is rejected
Copy the key for the correct event. If needed, reset it in Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder and keep the new value private.
The preview appears, but quality is unstable
Check the source and encoder output, review stream-health messages, and compare outbound upload capacity with the total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup encoders when applicable. Check outbound speed rather than relying on download speed; the 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured guarantee. See YouTube streaming tips.
