First find out whether the router’s internet-facing WAN lease or the encoder’s private LAN lease renewed, then check whether the interruption affected only the stream or the whole network. YouTube’s published guidance recommends reliable connectivity, adequate upload capacity, testing, and monitoring; it does not prescribe a DHCP-specific fix.
Start by identifying what renewed
DHCP assigns network addresses. A router can renew its WAN lease with its internet provider, while a computer or encoder can renew a private LAN lease with the router. Those events involve different parts of the connection, so they point to different places to investigate. The available YouTube guidance does not establish that either kind of renewal should interrupt a stream.
- Record the dropout time. Note when the broadcast stopped or became unhealthy, and compare it with the router’s event log. Consult the router’s documentation for where that model and firmware record WAN lease renewals and LAN client activity.
- Identify the lease event. Determine whether the event was a WAN renewal or a LAN client renewal. Do not assume one from the timing alone.
- Check the rest of the network. At that time, did other devices or internet services lose connectivity too? A broader interruption points to the router/ISP path; if other devices stayed online, inspect the encoder’s logs and YouTube stream-health messages. This comparison narrows the investigation but does not, by itself, prove a cause.
YouTube’s advice is to use a reliable network: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” (YouTube Help: Streaming tips.)
Prepare the network and encoder before the next broadcast
Check upload capacity and leave headroom
Measure upload speed rather than relying on download speed, then compare it with the actual stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. If you send primary and backup streams, include their combined bitrate in the capacity check. A speed test is a useful check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain available throughout the event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See Streaming tips.
Use settings suited to the selected protocol and stream
Configure the encoder with the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then choose settings appropriate to the encoder, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. These settings help meet YouTube’s ingest guidance; they cannot prevent a network connection from dropping.

Test and watch stream health
Before the event, test the full setup with representative motion and audio. Preview the broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health and messages while live. If the stream drops again, note the time and whether the network as a whole failed, then compare that evidence with router and encoder logs.
When to investigate the router or ISP
- WAN renewal and other devices lose internet: If router logs confirm a WAN renewal at the same time and other devices also lose connectivity, ask the router or ISP provider to investigate that model- and service-specific behavior.
- LAN renewal and only the encoder is affected: If the event is a client’s LAN lease renewal and other devices remain connected, investigate the encoder and the router’s LAN lease handling using their documentation and logs.
- Evidence does not match either pattern: Check the encoder’s connection logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and continue comparing their timestamps with router events. Do not replace equipment or change a router setting solely because the dropout happened near a renewal; the cause has not been established.
YouTube’s RTMPS option encrypts RTMP traffic using TLS/SSL. It is a transport-security choice, not protection against a loss of network connectivity, and YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting covers connection and URL configuration rather than DHCP lease handling. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you are broadcasting uploaded video as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud rather than from a home computer and router. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and it does not diagnose a router or ISP fault. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
