YouTube’s auto-start setting can remove a manual Go Live step, but it cannot turn on your computer or open OBS.
How recovery works after a power cut
Recovery is a sequence, not a single OBS switch. A failure at any link can leave viewers with an offline stream even if the rest of the setup is working.
- Mains power returns. A UPS may bridge a brief interruption for equipment connected to it, but cannot guarantee continuity through a long outage.
- The computer starts. Whether it powers itself on when AC returns depends on its firmware and hardware.
- The network returns. The router, ONT or modem, and internet connection must be available; they may take longer to restart than the PC.
- OBS launches. It needs to start under the right Windows account or session.
- OBS sends the encoder feed. It must use the intended YouTube service, server/URL, and current stream key.
- YouTube receives and starts the stream. Whether the broadcast starts automatically depends on the YouTube auto-start setting.
- You verify the viewer-facing result. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health rather than assuming that an OBS preview means viewers can see a healthy broadcast.
Configure the PC and network for recovery
1. Check whether the computer can start when power returns
Some PC firmware offers an AC power recovery option that controls whether the machine stays off, powers on, or restores its previous state after mains returns. Its name, location, and availability vary by PC or motherboard. Consult the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model; there is no universal BIOS/UEFI menu path established here.
Test the behavior safely before relying on it. A setting that starts the PC does not by itself start Windows, OBS, or the YouTube broadcast.

2. Make sure networking is ready before OBS tries to connect
Work out which equipment loses power in your setup: router, ONT/modem, switches, and the PC may not all restart together. After mains returns, allow the internet connection to come back before judging OBS’s connection behavior.
If the PC boots faster than the network, OBS may make its initial connection attempt too early. An OBS community forum discussion suggests that an initial failure may not always be recovered by auto-reconnect; treat that as a possibility to test, not an official guarantee. A delayed OBS launch or a retry mechanism may help, but the appropriate method depends on your Windows and OBS versions.

3. Consider a UPS only for the interruption it can cover
A UPS can keep selected equipment powered for some period during a short local power loss. Choose one for the actual combined load of the PC and network gear, and check runtime at that load, output and plug compatibility, battery replacement, and local service availability. It does not configure AC recovery, launch OBS, or solve an ISP outage, and it cannot guarantee continuity through a long outage.

4. Configure startup for the Windows account that streams
Use a supported Windows startup mechanism appropriate to the PC and the account or session used for streaming. The exact procedure can vary with Windows version and account configuration, so confirm the current Microsoft guidance for that machine. An OBS forum post discusses a startup shortcut and Task Scheduler, but it is community advice rather than a universal, officially verified procedure.

After configuring startup, reboot normally and confirm OBS actually opens in the intended account. Do not assume a login-dependent startup action will run if the machine is waiting at a sign-in screen.
5. Verify OBS’s YouTube connection details
YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address an encoder uses to send a feed. A power cut alone is not a reason to reset it. In OBS, check the YouTube service and server/URL along with the key. If you reset the key or OBS reports a key error, copy the current key from YouTube into OBS. Keep the key private: do not show it in screenshots or logs.

YouTube’s auto-start setting controls what happens when YouTube detects an encoder feed; it does not power on the PC or open OBS.

YouTube recommends testing the encoder, checking the preview and stream health, and testing failover rather than assuming it will work. Run tests with a non-public stream and verify the broadcast itself, not just OBS.
- Start a private or unlisted test and confirm picture, sound, preview, and stream health in Live Control Room.
- Briefly interrupt the internet connection and check whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube resumes receiving a healthy feed.
- Reboot the PC normally and confirm OBS launches in the right account, connects, and produces the expected YouTube behavior.
- If your hardware permits a controlled power-restoration test, verify whether the PC starts after AC returns and repeat the checks for OBS and YouTube.
- Test any planned startup delay or retry mechanism on that same PC and OBS version. Confirm what happens when the network is still unavailable at OBS launch.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s needs. This is a YouTube Help recommendation, not a measured guarantee of recovery. Its live troubleshooting guide and streaming tips cover monitoring and connection checks.
Troubleshoot the point where recovery stops
- The PC stays off after mains returns: Check its AC-recovery behavior with the PC or motherboard manufacturer. Do not assume there is a universal firmware setting or path.
- The PC starts, but OBS does not: Check that startup is configured for the account/session that streams and test a normal reboot. Validate the procedure for your current Windows version.
- OBS opens but cannot connect: Confirm internet access and upload capacity, then check OBS connection status/logs and the YouTube service, server/URL, and key. YouTube separates encoder/source checks from outbound-network checks; OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or bitrate beyond available capacity. - OBS connects, but YouTube does not go live: Check whether auto-start is off and the broadcast is waiting for a manual Go Live action. Verify the selected stream and current key in Live Control Room.
- The feed returns, but a camera or capture source is missing: Test the source’s recovery separately from OBS’s connection to YouTube. A forum report describes a camera recovery issue, but it is anecdotal and does not establish a general rule.
- OBS looks healthy, but viewers see an interruption or unhealthy stream: Check Live Control Room stream health, upload bandwidth, and other devices or users consuming the connection. A local OBS preview alone does not establish that the outbound path is working.
