Start by recording what OBS and YouTube report at the exact moment it drops. Then test the connection in layers: encoder output, OBS bitrate and ingest path, local network, and YouTube Live Control Room.
What a disconnect tells you—and what it does not
OBS’s official connection guide describes intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as signs of a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. OBS connects directly to YouTube or another streaming service; there is no OBS streaming server in between. If the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, OBS may drop frames to compensate, and enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
That identifies a class of problem, not the cause in your particular setup. “Every few hours” is a reason to capture timestamps and status messages, not proof of a stream-key expiry, hardware defect, or automatic timeout. The available guidance does not establish a special several-hour disconnect mechanism.
Capture evidence at the next failure
Before changing settings, note what failed and when. A viewer seeing buffering is not the same as the broadcaster’s encoder losing its connection; this diagnosis concerns the encoder’s connection.

- Record the exact time of the failure.
- In OBS, note the dropped-frame counter, connection indicator, and any disconnect message. Save the log covering the failure.
- Check whether OBS reports a disconnection or whether YouTube ended or paused the event.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect Stream health and the timestamped status or error messages. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions. See your live stream’s metrics
These observations help distinguish a connection drop from an encoder-output problem or a YouTube event status change. Keep the timestamps: they are useful when comparing OBS logs with YouTube’s messages and when contacting your ISP or YouTube.
Work through the likely failure points
1. Check encoder output and YouTube’s reported error
In Live Control Room, review the stream-health messages at the failure time. YouTube recommends checking the encoder version, picture and sound in the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and local archive. If the encoder output looks healthy but the stream still has trouble, YouTube says an outbound internet connection issue may be involved. Troubleshoot live stream errors

If the error occurs when starting the encoder, YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions for third-party encoders say to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not treat that as a general fix for a stream that has already been running for hours: refresh a key when the reported error points to that branch.
2. Test bitrate and ingest path
OBS recommends trying another available server, lowering the video bitrate, and testing another streaming service. Its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate—not a guarantee of stability or a substitute for YouTube’s limits. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

- Lower the video bitrate and observe whether dropped frames or disconnects change. Keep the resolution and frame rate in mind: lowering bitrate can reduce picture quality.
- If OBS offers another ingest server, test it and compare the results over a similar period.
- If practical, test another streaming service. If the same computer and network remain stable there but not on YouTube, that helps isolate a service-specific path; it does not itself fix the YouTube connection.
Change one variable at a time and record the result. A bitrate reduction may help the stream stay connected under congestion, but it can mitigate symptoms without removing the underlying network problem.
3. Separate Wi-Fi, router, and computer factors
- If you stream over Wi-Fi, repeat the test over Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software interferes. Restore security protections afterward; if the test identifies interference, configure an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Check whether network-optimization or traffic-prioritization software is affecting OBS, and check network drivers.
- Restart the modem and router as a basic connectivity check. A restart is not evidence that either device needs replacement.
OBS lists faulty cables, routers, switches, and network cards among possible causes, but that does not mean replacing hardware is the first step. Test the connection and look for repeatable evidence before buying anything.

4. Treat optional OBS network settings as controlled tests
OBS lists several settings that may help some users; they are troubleshooting options, not universal fixes. On Windows, test network optimizations or TCP pacing if available, and check the log for added diagnostic detail. Test “Bind to IP: Default” or an IPv4-only configuration only when investigating the network path; if IPv4-only makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to the default IPv4 and IPv6 configuration. Dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames when the connection is congested, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the root cause and may reduce video quality. Use it as a mitigation if continuity matters more than a consistent bitrate, not as proof that the connection is healthy.

When escalating, include timestamps, the OBS log, YouTube’s exact status message, bitrate changes, whether Ethernet or another ingest server changed the outcome, and whether another service was affected. This gives support teams evidence about which part of the path to investigate.
