Instead, use a separate scheduler to read the file and call the YouTube Data API; schedule the live broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API.
How the pieces fit together
A scheduled live broadcast and a timed playlist edit are separate operations. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room schedules the broadcast. The YouTube Data API’s playlistItems methods add, update, or delete items in a playlist. Your script or job scheduler supplies the timing by reading your JSON and making the relevant API request.
JSON is the input format for your automation, not a native YouTube playlist scheduling feature. The API documentation describes request fields for playlist items; it does not define a standard schedule-file format or an orchestrator that executes one. Choose the right operation for each task

Build a JSON-driven playlist workflow
1. Collect the IDs you will need
Create or select the target YouTube playlist and record its playlist ID. For each video to add, record its video ID. For an existing playlist entry you plan to update or delete, record its playlist-item ID; a video ID and playlist-item ID are different identifiers.

2. Define your own schedule file
YouTube does not prescribe a JSON schedule schema. Choose a format your program can validate and maintain. For example, the following is an illustrative design—not a YouTube-supported upload format:

}Choose and document a time zone convention. UTC timestamps ending in Z avoid ambiguity when your scheduler runs in a different zone from your channel team. Validate required fields for each operation before making any API request, and reject unknown operations or malformed timestamps rather than silently skipping them.

3. Authorize the channel
Your application needs OAuth authorization for an account that can modify the target playlist. The insert method reference lists accepted scopes including youtube and youtube.force-ssl. Use an appropriate write scope, handle the OAuth consent and token-refresh flow for your application, and protect credentials and tokens; do not put secrets in the JSON schedule file.
4. Map each JSON action to an API method
- Add an item: call
playlistItems.insertwith a request body containingsnippet.playlistIdandsnippet.resourceId. For a video, the resource identifier useskind: "youtube#video"and the video ID. - Move an item: call
playlistItems.updatewith the playlist-itemid,snippet.playlistId,snippet.resourceId, and the desiredsnippet.position. Position is zero-based. The playlist must use Manual ordering for an explicit position to be valid. - Remove an item: call
playlistItems.deletewith the playlist-item ID.
Consult the official insert, update, and delete method references for request details and current requirements. The insert and update method references each list a quota cost of 50 units per call.

5. Run and monitor the schedule
Configure a scheduler—such as a scheduled script or job runner in your chosen hosting environment—to check the JSON and execute due actions. The scheduler is responsible for timing; the YouTube playlist API call itself does not wait for a future timestamp in your file.
- Parse the file and validate its schema, timestamps, identifiers, and operation-specific fields.
- Select due actions and prevent the same action from running twice if the job is retried.
- Make the authorized API request and record the action, time, response, and any error.
- On failure, use a bounded retry policy appropriate to your environment, and alert an operator when an action remains unsuccessful.
Test with a noncritical playlist before relying on the automation for a public event. The exact scheduler, hosting, retry strategy, and secret-storage approach depend on your implementation; they are not specified by YouTube as requirements for a JSON schedule.

Schedule the live broadcast separately
Using YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings, then set the event details and scheduled start time.
- Confirm that the stream appears in the scheduled list. YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming; visibility is not guaranteed.
These steps schedule the broadcast, not the JSON playlist actions. YouTube Help’s Manage live stream settings explains scheduled streams and their settings.
Using the Live Streaming API
An application can schedule a broadcast using the Live Streaming API’s broadcast resource and its scheduled start-time fields. That creates or configures a live broadcast; it does not document or trigger playlist item changes. Keep broadcast scheduling and playlist automation as distinct jobs in your code and operations plan.

Common failure points and fixes
- Playlist insert or update is unauthorized: confirm that OAuth consent was granted for a scope accepted by the method, the token is valid, and the authorized account can edit the target playlist.
- An item cannot be moved: confirm the playlist uses Manual ordering, use a zero-based position, and pass the playlist-item ID as the update resource’s
id. - An update request is missing required data: include the playlist-item ID, playlist ID, and resource identifier in the update body, along with the position when reordering.
- The wrong entry is removed or moved: verify that you stored the playlist-item ID for that playlist entry; do not substitute the video ID.
- A change does not happen at the listed time: check that the scheduler is running, its clock and time-zone interpretation match your file convention, and it is invoking the API. A timestamp in JSON alone does not create a timer on YouTube.
- A live broadcast starts but the playlist did not change: the broadcast schedule and playlist job are independent. Check the scheduler’s execution log and API response separately.
- Requests run more than once after a retry: track completed actions or otherwise make your job idempotent so a retry does not unintentionally add duplicate entries.
- Quota is exhausted: account for API calls in your job design. The insert and update references list 50 quota units for each method call; check current quota information in your Google API project.
Operational and editorial checks for a documentary stream
Playlist automation controls order and membership; it does not grant rights to the videos or guarantee that a live stream complies with YouTube policies. Before scheduling a public documentary playlist, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the footage, music, narration, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright rules. YouTube also recommends communicating a live schedule and changes to viewers; make event updates clear if the playlist order or content will differ from what viewers expect.
