YouTube Studio can schedule the public event, but it does not play an M3U playlist. To run a 24/7 channel, you need a playout process that reads and plays the playlist, an encoder that sends its audio and video to YouTube, and a YouTube broadcast configured for the schedule you want. Validate the exact playlist and its sources before relying on it: M3U compatibility and recovery behavior vary by tool and input.
Understand the three parts of a 24/7 stream
- The YouTube event: A live broadcast is the public event viewers can find or join. You can schedule it in YouTube Studio.
- The stream connection: An encoder sends video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key.
- The playlist playout: Software or a service interprets the M3U entries, plays the media, and supplies audio and video to the encoder.
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide distinguishes the event (a liveBroadcast) from the transmission settings (a liveStream). Scheduling the event alone does not start playlist playback or send a feed.
Choose one continuous channel or recurring event pages
One continuous 24/7 channel
Use this design when you want a single broadcast to remain live while your playlist continues. The API guide describes a 24/7 broadcast that continues while a separate interview is sent through another broadcast. It is a useful model for continuous programming, but it does not itself provide a playlist player.
Separate scheduled events
If you want viewers to see distinct public event pages—for example, one event for each documentary block—schedule separate broadcasts. YouTube’s API guide describes recurring events that can share one stream configuration, with one event live at a time. This is different from leaving one broadcast continuously live.

Prepare and validate the M3U playlist
- Confirm you can use every entry. Check that you have permission to access and stream the linked media. An M3U file is a playlist, not a guarantee that its entries are available, authorized, or compatible with your playout software.
- Identify the actual input types. Inspect whether entries point to local files, network streams, or HLS sources, and whether authentication or other access restrictions apply. Test the exact URLs and formats with your chosen player or playout tool.
- Check playlist behavior. Verify that the tool can parse the file, move between entries, and continue at the end if you intend to loop it. Test what it does with a missing or unreachable entry rather than assuming it skips or retries automatically.
- Test the output to the encoder. Confirm that both audio and video play continuously and that the encoder receives a stable feed. FFmpeg documents HLS playlist and muxer capabilities, including M3U8 output examples, but those examples are not a universal command for every IPTV M3U input. See the FFmpeg formats documentation and validate your particular source.
YouTube’s published encoder directory names OBS, cloud tools such as Gyre and Upstream, and hardware encoders such as the AJA HELO Plus. Those listings do not establish that each tool can consume an arbitrary M3U playlist. Confirm input compatibility for the specific file and source formats before choosing a solution. Enable live streaming and schedule the event
- Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch. Follow the current channel eligibility and verification prompts in YouTube Studio.
- Create the public event if you want one scheduled in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then set up the stream in Live Control Room. Enter the title, description, visibility, and schedule, and choose the continuous-broadcast or separate-event design that fits your channel.
- Get the connection details. In Live Control Room, use the stream’s settings to obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
YouTube’s setup and encoder instructions are in its Help guide for creating a live stream with an encoder. Labels can change; use the current Live Control Room prompts if they differ from the paths above.

Connect the playlist playout to YouTube
- In your chosen playout system, load the validated M3U playlist and configure it to send playable audio and video to an encoder. If the playout tool and encoder are separate, connect the playout output to the encoder using a method both support.
- In the encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Select settings supported by both the encoder and your source; do not assume a playlist’s varied entries can all be sent unchanged through one output configuration.
- Start the playlist and encoder. Open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview.
- Check that video and audio are present and that the feed is stable. When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room to start the scheduled public event.
For a truly continuous channel, keep the playout and encoder process running while the broadcast remains live. For recurring event pages, start and end each scheduled broadcast according to its own timing. The event schedule does not control whether your playlist player or encoder is running.
Test continuity, recovery, and replays
Run a long test before promoting a 24/7 schedule. Specifically check playlist parsing, every source type, audio/video continuity, transitions between entries, and what happens when an entry fails. Also test a source outage, encoder restart, and network interruption. Recovery depends on your playout and encoder setup; do not assume a failed source will be skipped or that a dropped YouTube connection will resume without intervention.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not plan on one automatic replay archive for an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. If replays matter, arrange separate recordings or controlled event boundaries, and verify that your chosen workflow produces the recordings you need.

Local software, a hosted playout service, or hardware
A local setup can offer direct control over playlist parsing and monitoring, but the computer and network must remain available. Hosted services avoid keeping a dedicated PC at home, while a hardware encoder can be another option; the YouTube encoder directory does not confirm arbitrary M3U input support for the named hosted tools or AJA HELO Plus. For any option, confirm compatibility with your exact playlist and plan how to monitor failures.
