To keep a multi-video YouTube livestream from going straight back to its opening video, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and arrange the playlist so its last item differs from its first. OBS’s Shuffle option changes playback order, but the available documentation does not guarantee that it will prevent a repeat at the wraparound point. YouTube’s playlist repeat control is for viewers watching a playlist; it does not change the video sequence OBS sends to a live broadcast.
First, identify which playlist you mean
There are two separate playback layers. YouTube Help’s playlist repeat control makes a playlist repeat for someone watching it in YouTube’s player. YouTube describes the result as: “The playlist will repeat continuously.” That control does not rotate the media being encoded into your livestream.
For a broadcast made from media files on a computer, the relevant sequence is the one played by your streaming software. In OBS Studio, use a VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple media items.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Add the source: Open the OBS scene that will carry the playlist. In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Documentary playlist.”
- Add your files: Open the source’s properties and add the media files you want in the playlist. VLC Video is the playlist-style source; the regular Media Source is intended for individual media playback.
- Enable the loop: Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should continue after the final file. This repeats the playlist sequence.
- Choose whether to shuffle: Enable Shuffle only if you want the items in a changing order. Shuffle is not a documented guarantee that the last item in one cycle will differ from the first item in the next.
- Check the transition: Review the final-to-first transition in the sequence. To prevent the opening video from immediately repeating, arrange or curate the order so the last item is not the opening item, then check the cycle again after any playlist changes.
Which method prevents the opening repeat?
| Approach | Playback layer controlled | Loops? | Guarantees last-to-first difference? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube player playlist repeat | A viewer’s YouTube playlist playback | Yes, for viewer playback | No; it does not control the live encoder’s sequence | Repeating a playlist for someone watching in YouTube |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Media sent by OBS to the livestream | Yes | No guarantee from looping alone | Continuous playback of multiple media files |
| OBS VLC Video with Shuffle | Order of media items played by OBS | Only if Loop Playlist is also enabled | No guarantee established | Varying the order when an occasional boundary repeat is acceptable |
| Manually arranged playlist | Media sent by OBS to the livestream | With Loop Playlist enabled | Yes, if you check that the final item differs from the opening item | When the opening video must not immediately recur |
The most reliable approach for that specific boundary is deliberate ordering, not shuffle alone. A playlist edit can change the boundary, so inspect it again whenever you add, remove, or reorder files.

Check what happens when the source is hidden
If you switch scenes while the broadcast continues, OBS’s VLC source has visibility-behavior controls, including options labelled for stopping or restarting playback, pausing or unpausing, and always playing. Playback can depend on the selected behavior. The available documentation does not establish a current default that applies to every OBS version, so inspect the setting in your installed version and test a scene change before relying on a particular result.
Optional community-reported reshuffle method
An OBS forum reply describes refreshing a VLC source with the Directory Watch Media plugin to reshuffle a playlist. This is community guidance, not an official guarantee; it may depend on plugin compatibility and version. Check the plugin’s current instructions and compatibility with your OBS installation before using it in a live broadcast. It is not necessary for a manually checked end-to-start transition.

Copyright and YouTube channel checks
A looping playlist does not change your responsibility for the media in it. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video, soundtrack, and other included material. A video being available online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Also consider whether your channel’s presentation adds meaningful context or original value rather than simply repeating material; playlist mechanics alone do not establish that a channel meets YouTube’s policies. Check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before going live.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist ends instead of continuing: Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- The opening video returns immediately after the last file: Shuffle has no established no-repeat guarantee at the cycle boundary. Reorder the items so the final file differs from the opening file, then review the transition.
- The sequence changes unexpectedly: Check whether Shuffle is enabled and whether the playlist was edited. Arrange and recheck the intended order if a predictable sequence matters.
- Playback stops or resumes differently after a scene change: Inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior setting and test hiding and showing the source while monitoring the output.
- A plugin-based refresh does not work: Treat Directory Watch Media reshuffling as optional community guidance. Verify that the plugin supports your OBS version and follow its current instructions; use manual ordering if you need a controlled boundary.
