If YouTube Live keeps buffering on a BSNL connection, first lower the playback quality and check YouTube’s Stats for nerds—especially Buffer Health. A speed test by itself cannot identify the cause. The problem might be unstable Wi-Fi, congestion, the device or app, a particular stream, or the connection path; the broadcaster’s bitrate is usually not the first setting a viewer can change.
Why does YouTube Live keep buffering on BSNL?
Buffering happens when the player cannot get enough playable video data ahead of time to keep playback going. A connection may be fast in a brief speed test yet fluctuate, lose packets, or slow down during congestion. The selected video resolution, Wi-Fi conditions, other devices using the connection, the viewing device, and the particular live stream can all matter.
BSNL’s performance can vary by place and time. TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report lists, for its overall BSNL data-performance row, a 4.06-second YouTube initial buffer delay, 58 ms 50th-percentile latency, 74.75 ms jitter, and 18.56% packet loss. Those are results from the report’s regional testing conditions—not a current measurement of your home connection, a national BSNL average, or proof that BSNL caused a particular interruption. The report also has site-level variation. TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report
Start by comparing the same stream under similar conditions: same device, selected quality, and approximate time. If only one stream buffers, its broadcast or delivery conditions may be involved. If several devices and services stall on the same BSNL connection, the issue may be with that connection or its local network.

What bitrate do I need to watch YouTube Live?
As a viewer, you generally do not set the broadcaster’s encoder bitrate. That bitrate is principally an upload and ingestion setting for the creator. YouTube transcodes creator streams into formats for viewers across devices and networks, so your practical questions are whether the selected playback resolution is sustainable and whether the player can keep its buffer supplied.
YouTube lists these recommended sustained playback speeds by resolution on its viewer error-help page. They are recommendations, not guarantees that live video will never interrupt:

| Playback resolution | YouTube’s recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p HD | 5 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p SD | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p SD | 0.7 Mbps |
YouTube’s playback error guidance gives these resolution-specific figures. Separately, YouTube’s TV troubleshooting page recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is a TV-specific troubleshooting recommendation, not a replacement for the resolution guidance above or a universal threshold for every device and live stream. If the stream is unstable at its current quality, open the player settings and choose a lower resolution, such as 720p or 480p. If playback becomes stable, that suggests the previous quality was harder for the connection to sustain at that time; it does not by itself identify whether Wi-Fi, congestion, the device, or the wider connection was responsible.

How do I check latency on a BSNL connection?
There are two different meanings of “latency” in this situation:
- Network latency is the response delay between your device and a network destination. A ping test can provide a network-delay measurement, but one result is only a snapshot and does not show whether YouTube’s live player has enough video buffered.
- YouTube live latency is how far behind the live event your playback is. A stream can play smoothly while being delayed, or be close to real time but buffer more often.
YouTube explains that lower-latency broadcast settings reduce the player’s read-ahead buffer and can increase buffering. Its guidance puts it plainly: “With lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” This is a trade-off in the broadcast and player setup, not evidence that your BSNL ping alone is high. For playback troubleshooting, use Stats for nerds where available. Note connection speed, current and optimal resolution, Buffer Health, and whether the player repeatedly re-buffers. Buffer Health is the reserve of live data available to the player; falling or repeatedly emptying buffer health is more directly relevant to interruptions than the delay behind the event. YouTube says its debug information can help diagnose playback problems and includes bandwidth-related details. YouTube’s Stats for nerds guidance
Work through the problem in this order
- Record what is happening. Note the exact error text, date and time, device, YouTube app or browser, stream, selected quality, and whether you are on Wi-Fi or another connection. Also note whether other sites or services stall. These details make comparisons useful rather than relying on “slow internet.”
- Try the same stream on another supported device. If only one device has the problem, restart it and the YouTube app or browser, then check for updates. On Android, try clearing the YouTube app cache. YouTube also recommends trying a different connection for playback issues. YouTube playback troubleshooting
- Compare another connection, if available. Try Wi-Fi versus mobile data, or another internet connection, while keeping the device and stream as similar as possible. If the stream works over the alternative connection, that narrows the issue to the original connection path or its interaction with the stream; it does not prove BSNL is at fault.
- Test near the viewing device. On a TV, run a speed test at the TV’s location rather than relying on a test taken beside the router. Move the TV or device nearer the router, address obvious obstructions or interference, and reduce simultaneous network use. YouTube recommends checking device placement and interference and allows viewers to lower playback quality. YouTube TV troubleshooting guidance
- Inspect Stats for nerds. With the stream playing, record connection speed, current and optimal resolution, Buffer Health, and rebuffering. Compare those readings when playback is working and when it stalls, if possible. YouTube’s Stats for nerds guidance
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if your equipment supports it. A cable can help determine whether Wi-Fi is part of the problem, but treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. YouTube’s Ethernet recommendation specifically concerns live streaming from a computer; applying it to a viewer is a cautious troubleshooting option, not a viewer-specific promise. YouTube’s live encoder settings and connection guidance
- Escalate with repeatable details. If the issue follows the BSNL connection across devices, streams, or services, record the date, time, location, connection type, quality, and results before contacting BSNL support. If only one live stream is affected, broadcaster settings or stream-specific conditions remain possible; YouTube notes that network congestion can delay streams even when a connection is otherwise capable. YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance
Common symptoms and what they suggest
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Lowering resolution stops the buffering | The connection may not sustain the original quality at that moment. Compare Buffer Health and test again at the viewing location. |
| Only one device buffers | Restart or update its app or browser, check its Wi-Fi conditions, and try clearing the YouTube app cache on Android. |
| Wi-Fi buffers but another connection works | Investigate the Wi-Fi path, placement, obstruction, interference, and simultaneous network use. The comparison alone does not establish a BSNL fault. |
| Several services and devices stall on the same connection | Keep time-stamped results and connection details; the problem may extend beyond that YouTube stream. |
| Only one live stream buffers, while other playback is stable | Consider stream-specific delivery or broadcaster latency settings as well as the connection. Lower live latency can mean more playback buffering. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a high ping always cause YouTube Live buffering?
No. Ping measures network response delay; it does not show whether the live player has enough buffered video. Check Stats for nerds and Buffer Health as well.
Should I change the creator’s bitrate to fix buffering as a viewer?
Usually not. A viewer cannot change the broadcaster’s encoder bitrate. Try a sustainable playback quality and compare the connection and player diagnostics instead.
