YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for an NVIDIA GPU Playlist Stream

For YouTube Live, choose bitrate by outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec—not GPU model or playlist format. See YouTube’s current recommendations and setup checks.

Set bitrate according to your stream’s outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec—not the NVIDIA GPU model or the fact that the video is a playlist. For 1080p60, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 17 Mbps for H.264. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where your encoder supports it. These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular GPU or streaming application supports every combination.

Choose the bitrate for your output

Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate your encoder sends to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s minimum and recommended video bitrates; YouTube’s guidance does not establish a separate bitrate for playlist or prerecorded-video streams.

Ingest resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
4K / 2160p60 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
4K / 2160p30 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p60 6 Mbps 24 Mbps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p30 5 Mbps 15 Mbps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” (accessed October 3, 2026). These are recommendations, not measured quality results. At 1080p60, for example, the recommended target differs by codec: 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. Choose only a codec and mode your encoder actually supports.

Set the encoder’s stream parameters

  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Select the intended outgoing mode first, then use its matching row in the table. The guidance does not identify NVIDIA GPU generations or promise that every GPU, driver, and encoder application can produce every listed codec and mode.
  • Stream key: Create or select the key in YouTube and enter it in your encoder. Keep it private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.

YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. The relevant input for these settings is the encoder’s outgoing ingest format—not a viewer’s playback resolution.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure and test the playlist stream

  1. Choose the output mode and codec. Decide whether the stream will be 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K and 30 or 60 fps, then confirm your NVIDIA encoder and application offer that combination.
  2. Set bitrate, CBR, and keyframes. Apply the matching recommended bitrate from the table, select CBR, and set keyframes to two seconds.
  3. Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select a stream key and enter it in the encoder. Use RTMPS if available in the encoder’s connection settings.
  4. Run a representative test. Test before starting the public stream using audio and motion similar to the playlist material. A static title card may not reveal issues that appear in moving documentary footage or music.
  5. Check connection capacity and stream health. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the available upload connection and running an upload-speed test. During the stream, monitor stream health and review warnings. YouTube does not give a universal upload-headroom multiplier in this guidance, so do not treat an invented buffer as an official rule.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and stream management guidance.

Playlist and continuous-stream considerations

The bitrate table applies to the video being ingested. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not define a special bitrate for a playlist or continuous prerecorded source, nor does it specify an NVIDIA-model-specific target. Match the encoder output to the table and verify that the chosen encoder can sustain that output over your internet connection.

Bitrate settings do not establish that you have rights to broadcast the playlist or that the content qualifies for monetization. Confirm you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before streaming. A technically healthy stream can still receive a copyright claim or other policy enforcement.

When HLS applies—and when it does not

RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended transport for the general encoder workflow. HLS is a distinct ingestion option, not a setting to add to a standard RTMP/RTMPS setup. YouTube’s HLS instructions specify 1–4 second segments in TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements only if your encoder workflow uses HLS.

Troubleshoot common bitrate problems

  • Stream-health warnings or dropped frames: Check whether the selected bitrate is reliable on the available upload connection. Test upload speed, reduce the output mode or bitrate if needed, then run a representative test again.
  • Bitrate does not match the table: Verify the actual outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec in the encoder. Use the corresponding row and codec column rather than choosing a target based only on the source file or GPU brand.
  • Keyframe warning: Set the interval to two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
  • Encoder cannot select the desired codec or resolution: YouTube’s recommendations do not confirm support for a particular NVIDIA GPU, driver, or application. Use a mode exposed by your encoder, then match the bitrate guidance for that mode.
  • HLS connection or playlist errors: Confirm the segment duration, TS format, HTTPS methods, and outstanding-segment limit against YouTube’s HLS documentation. These requirements do not apply to a normal RTMPS connection.
  • Stream will not connect: Recheck that the stream key entered in the encoder is the key selected for the current YouTube broadcast, and confirm the chosen transport matches the encoder configuration.
