For a prerecorded 1920×1080, 50 fps video, start with FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing, H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval: at 50 fps, that means a 100-frame GOP. YouTube does not publish a specific H.264 bitrate recommendation for 1080p50; 17 Mbps is a practical starting inference from its 1080p60 recommendation, not an official 50 fps figure. Test with the actual video and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.

Recommended FFmpeg command for 1080p50

This template sends a file to YouTube Live in real time using the RTMPS ingest workflow. Replace the URL and key placeholders with the exact values shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 50 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 17M -maxrate 17M -bufsize 34M
  -g 100 -keyint_min 100 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

The template is an example, not a configuration independently verified on every operating system, FFmpeg build, network, or YouTube account. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the libx264 encoder and supports the selected RTMPS endpoint. If it does not, check the installed encoders and use an ingest protocol and codec combination supported by your build and YouTube.

What the important settings do

Real-time pacing and the YouTube destination

  • -re reads the file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as the computer can process it. This is important when a file is the input to a live stream.
  • rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY represents the ingest URL and stream key assigned in Live Control Room. Enter the exact current values; keep the key private because it acts like a password for the stream.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer used by FFmpeg’s documented RTMP workflow. The example uses RTMPS; use it when the endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it.

Video codec, frame rate, and pixel format

  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264, a straightforward choice for ordinary SDR streaming.
  • -r 50 requests a 50 fps output. Check the source’s actual frame rate first: forcing a different rate can duplicate or drop frames.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p is a common compatibility-oriented example setting. Verify it suits the source and output workflow rather than treating it as a universal requirement.
  • -preset veryfast is an example speed-versus-encoding-efficiency choice. A slower preset can use more processing time; test whether your computer can encode reliably in real time before changing it.

Bitrate and rate control

YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60, but does not give a 1080p50 row. The command’s 17 Mbps video target is therefore an informed conservative starting value taken from the higher adjacent frame-rate recommendation, not a published 1080p50 prescription. Actual needs vary with motion, image detail, and the stability of your upload connection.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • -b:v 17M sets the example video bitrate target.
  • -maxrate 17M and -bufsize 34M form part of a constrained-rate configuration. Do not assume that these flags make every FFmpeg build behave exactly like a platform’s CBR preset; verify the result in a test stream.
  • YouTube calls for CBR. Compare the configured rate with reliable upload capacity, and adjust only after checking the source, the connection, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.

Keyframes and GOP length

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 50 frames per second, two seconds is 100 frames, which is why the example uses -g 100. -keyint_min 100 and -sc_threshold 0 help keep keyframe spacing regular in this libx264 example. If you change the output frame rate, recalculate the GOP: use approximately twice the frame rate for a 2-second interval.

Audio

The example encodes AAC stereo at 128 kbps. YouTube lists 128 kbps stereo and 44.1 kHz stereo among its general audio recommendations; choose a sample rate suited to the source rather than resampling automatically. The example’s -ar 48000 is an explicit 48 kHz choice, not the listed general stereo rate. YouTube documents 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; this command is stereo, not 5.1.

Before you go live

  1. Create or select the live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream URL and key for the event. Paste them into the command or your encoder configuration, and do not share the key.
  2. Inspect the input. Confirm its frame size, frame rate, audio tracks, and whether it is SDR or HDR before forcing output settings. Do not unintentionally convert an HDR source to SDR without a deliberate color workflow.
  3. Run a private or unlisted test. Use audio and picture movement representative of the actual stream. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Check upload capacity and stream health. Watch the upload bitrate and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and event. The connection needs to sustain the outgoing stream reliably, not just reach a brief peak.

Troubleshooting common problems

FFmpeg cannot find the encoder or rejects an option

The installed build may not include libx264, or it may differ in supported encoders and options. Check the build’s available encoders and the error output; select an encoder and settings actually supported by that build rather than assuming the template runs unchanged.

YouTube does not receive the feed

Check that the ingest URL and stream key were copied correctly from the intended Live Control Room stream, and that the key remains current. Confirm the endpoint is reachable and that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen RTMPS workflow.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health

Compare the configured bitrate with dependable upload capacity, then inspect YouTube’s health messages. If the connection cannot sustain the rate, test a lower rate; also verify the ingest URL, key, and actual encoding behavior before changing multiple settings at once.

The output stutters or does not match the source motion

Check the source frame rate and the computer’s ability to encode in real time. The example forces 50 fps; if the source differs, confirm that converting it is intentional. Test the chosen preset with representative movement and monitor whether encoding and upload remain steady.

Color or appearance changes unexpectedly

Check whether the source is SDR or HDR and whether the output pixel format and color handling match the intended workflow. The example’s yuv420p setting alone is not a complete HDR-to-SDR conversion plan.

For a prerecorded stream that must stay online

The FFmpeg command above is the do-it-yourself route: the computer running it and its network connection must remain available while it sends the file. For a YouTube channel that should keep uploaded videos playing around the clock without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. See StreamNeo for details. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube publish a recommended bitrate specifically for 1080p50?

No. Its cited H.264 table gives rates for 1080p30 and 1080p60, not 1080p50.

What does a 100-frame GOP mean at 50 fps?

It is a two-second interval, because 100 frames divided by 50 frames per second equals two seconds.
