Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with the exact, timestamped warning beside the stream-health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room. “Encoder error” can mean the encoder could not start or that YouTube is receiving a stream with a specific problem; the warning text tells you which setting or connection to check. If the encoder will not start, first refresh the stream key and update the encoder. If the stream is already reaching YouTube, change only the setting named in the warning, then check stream health again.
First identify which kind of encoder error you have
Open YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room, select the relevant stream, and read the message beside its health indicator. Note the message and timestamp before changing settings: YouTube says error messages are timestamped and can remain visible until the underlying issue is fixed. Its documentation describes red errors as critical and yellow warnings as moderate, but the actual wording is the better diagnostic clue, especially if your interface is localized.
- The encoder will not start: troubleshoot the stream key, YouTube connection, or encoder integration.
- The encoder starts, but stream health is poor: use the warning to identify a format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe, or connection issue.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API also uses states such as active, created, error, inactive, and ready, with health labels including good, ok, bad, and noData. These are diagnostic states, not explanations on their own; look for the associated issue description.
If the encoder will not start
Refresh the stream key and update the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the active event.
- Copy the current stream key for that event.
- In the encoder, replace the saved key with the current one and update the encoder if an update is available.
- Try starting the encoder again.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance names getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder as the first fix for a third-party encoder startup error. If you sign in to YouTube from inside third-party software rather than entering a stream key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team.

Check how Livepush is connected to YouTube
The next check depends on how you set up the Livepush destination. Livepush supports linking a Google/YouTube account or manually configuring a YouTube RTMP key.
- Linked account: confirm the channel is still linked, reconnect it if it is not, and save the destination. Select or create the intended live event.
- Manual RTMP key: confirm the key belongs to the event you intend to stream to, then copy it carefully into the Livepush destination. Livepush’s manual route requires setting up events individually.
If the event or key has changed, update the destination with the details for the active event rather than reusing an old key.

If YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health
Do not change every encoder setting at once. Match the warning’s wording to the relevant check below, change that setting, and then re-check the health indicator.
Format and codecs
YouTube’s standard ingest configuration expects H.264 video and AAC audio. Warnings can also identify an unsupported codec, a bad container, or a mismatched profile. Check the encoder’s output format and profile against the settings YouTube lists for the current stream.

Bitrate
For a fixed-resolution entry point, YouTube says the video bitrate should match the value for the resolution selected in its encoder settings. Check the selected resolution and corresponding current recommendation in Live Control Room or YouTube’s encoder settings; do not substitute a generic bitrate value. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution, lower the resolution and use the matching bitrate guidance. YouTube’s error guide recommends an audio bitrate of 128 Kbps.
Audio streams and channels
The ingest should contain exactly one audio stream. YouTube flags missing audio, multiple audio streams, and more than two audio channels. Check that the encoder is sending one audio stream with one or two channels.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Video stream, resolution, and scan type
The ingest should contain one video stream. YouTube can flag missing or multiple video streams, interlaced output, an excessive frame rate, or a resolution mismatch. Match the output resolution to the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings, use progressive video, and check the warning for any frame-rate limit it specifies.
Keyframes and GOP
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds—for example, every 60 frames at 30 fps. Warnings may indicate that the interval is too long or too short; YouTube also identifies open GOP as unsupported. Set the keyframe interval to the value YouTube expects for the stream and ensure the encoder does not use open GOP.

Primary and backup streams
If you configured failover streams, check that their settings match. YouTube identifies codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and channel configuration as settings that need to align.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the local preview looks right, troubleshoot the connection
When audio and video look and sound correct in the encoder preview, check the encoder’s CPU load or logs and review a local recording if available. If those checks do not reveal a problem, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends contacting your internet provider if the test identifies a connection issue; its guidance does not establish one universal speed threshold for every stream.
Check RTMPS errors
- SSL error: verify that the protocol and server URL are correct. Use
rtmps, notrtmp; YouTube says port 443 may help with certain SSL errors. - Timeout: confirm the server URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS.
- For either error: use the URL and key shown for the current event in Live Control Room, not details copied from a different event.
Common causes and fixes at a glance
| What you see | What to check | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder will not start | Current event’s stream key and encoder version | Copy a fresh key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and retry. |
| Livepush cannot reach the intended event | Linked YouTube channel or manually entered event key | Reconnect and save the linked destination, or verify the manual key belongs to the active event. |
| Format or codec warning | Container, profile, H.264 video, and AAC audio | Correct the format setting named by the warning. |
| Bitrate or resolution warning | Selected resolution and its current bitrate guidance | Match the encoder to YouTube’s setting for that resolution, or lower the resolution if needed. |
| Audio or video stream warning | Number of streams and audio channel count | Send one video stream and one audio stream with no more than two audio channels. |
| Keyframe or GOP warning | Keyframe interval and GOP mode | Use the expected interval—YouTube recommends two seconds—and disable open GOP. |
| RTMPS SSL error or timeout | Protocol, server URL, RTMPS support, and possibly port 443 | Use the current event’s correct RTMPS details and check encoder support. |
| Preview is healthy but stream degrades | Encoder load, logs, local recording, and outbound connection | Use those checks to distinguish an encoder-side fault from a connection issue. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you repeatedly stream prerecorded videos as a YouTube loop, manually maintaining an encoder and its ingest settings is one possible source of recurring warnings. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
Quick Recap

- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
