A connection timeout from a VPS does not prove that YouTube’s ingest port 1935 is blocked. First confirm the current ingest URL and protocol in YouTube Live Control Room, then test outbound connectivity from the VPS to that exact endpoint and port. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS, documents port 443 as an option for certain RTMPS SSL errors, and also supports HLS ingestion when the encoder can use it.
What a timeout does—and does not—tell you
A timeout means the encoder did not complete a connection in the expected time; it does not identify whether the cause is a wrong or stale URL, an encoder that does not support the configured protocol, a local or provider network restriction, or another connectivity problem. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifically advises checking the URL and encoder support when a connection times out, while its general troubleshooting guidance points to outbound connectivity.
Do not assume every YouTube ingest endpoint requires TCP port 1935. The official guidance does not establish that as a universal requirement, and it does not establish that any particular VPS provider blocks the port. Diagnose the actual destination shown for your stream rather than treating “1935 blocked” as a confirmed cause.
Check the stream configuration first
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream’s current stream key and ingest URL, and copy the endpoint provided for the current setup. Avoid relying on an old URL saved in an encoder profile.
- Identify the configured protocol. Check whether the encoder is set to RTMP or RTMPS, and confirm that it supports that protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube’s RTMPS help covers URL and encoder checks; its encoder settings guidance lists supported ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for encryption.
- Check the key and URL separately. A correct stream key does not make a stale or mistyped server URL valid. Copy both from Live Control Room and confirm they are entered in the encoder’s intended server and key fields.
Test the outbound path from the VPS
The encoder on the VPS must be able to make an outbound connection to the precise server and port in the active ingest URL. Test from that VPS, against that destination and port. A test against an unrelated host does not establish that the YouTube ingest path works, and scanning the VPS from outside checks inbound access rather than the outbound connection the encoder needs.

If the destination connection fails, check the VPS host firewall and any cloud firewall or network rules that apply to outbound traffic. Then ask the hosting provider whether outbound TCP to that exact destination and port is filtered. YouTube’s live troubleshooting guidance recommends checking outbound connectivity and contacting the internet service provider when network issues are found. The available YouTube guidance does not specify the policies of individual VPS providers.
Opening inbound port 1935 on the VPS is not a fix for an encoder that needs to initiate an outbound connection. Change inbound rules only when you have a separate, specific inbound requirement.

When RTMPS on port 443 is relevant
If you are using RTMPS and YouTube reports the documented SSL error, YouTube says to try port 443. Use the current RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room and make sure the encoder supports the configuration. The YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide describes a TLS connection to port 443 at the server named in the ingest URL. Port 443 is not a universal fix for every timeout or every network restriction; it is a targeted option for the documented RTMPS SSL-error case.
Consider HLS only if your encoder and stream setup support it
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion using an HTTPS URL. This is a separate ingestion method, not simply RTMP moved to another port. Use it only if your encoder supports HLS and the stream is configured for HLS in YouTube Live Control Room. HLS is not a guaranteed bypass for a VPS network restriction. After the connection succeeds, check stream health
A reachable destination port is necessary but does not guarantee a stable broadcast. YouTube recommends adequate upload bandwidth, reliable connectivity, and about 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Treat that headroom as YouTube guidance, not a guaranteed threshold for every VPS or route. Run a test stream and monitor stream health before relying on the setup for a scheduled broadcast.
