YouTube fan funding lets eligible creators earn directly from viewers through recurring channel memberships and one-time purchases such as Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. Memberships suit ongoing perks; the Supers suit a live interaction or support for a particular video. Access depends on YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility, location, and feature-specific content rules.
How YouTube fan funding works
Fan funding is a set of paid YouTube features that lets viewers support creators through the platform. It is not the same as crowdfunding or charitable donations: YouTube says Supers and Super Thanks are not donation tools, and fundraiser features follow separate rules. Creators must comply with YouTube’s terms, Community Guidelines, channel monetization policies, and applicable laws, and are responsible for understanding whether they may offer or receive payments in their jurisdiction.
YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies set baseline requirements: the channel must be in YPP, the creator must be at least 18, and the creator must live somewhere the individual feature is available. Creators must also agree to the applicable Commerce Product Module or, for some earlier signatories, the Commerce Product Addendum. These are only baseline rules; each feature has additional eligibility requirements.
Memberships and the three Supers
| Feature | How viewers pay and interact | Best fit | Key restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships | Recurring monthly payment for creator-defined perks, such as badges and emoji. | Creators who can offer continuing benefits to members. | YPP, age, location, terms, and feature-specific rules apply. Check YouTube Studio for current eligibility. |
| Super Chat | A viewer purchases a highlighted message in live chat. | Live streams or Premieres with live chat enabled. | Unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos, and when chat or comments are disabled. |
| Super Stickers | A viewer purchases an animated image displayed in live chat. | Live streams or Premieres with live chat enabled. | The same listed content and chat restrictions as Super Chat apply. |
| Super Thanks | A one-time purchase gives the viewer an animation and an option to post a customizable comment. | Eligible long-form videos and Shorts, including eligible archived long-form streams or Premieres. | Unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, copyright-claimed, or fundraiser videos, and when comments are off. It is not available while a stream or Premiere is live. |
YouTube describes Super Chat and Super Stickers as ways for fans to connect with creators during live streams and Premieres. Unlike those live-chat purchases, Super Thanks is attached to an eligible video or Short; it can appear on an eligible archived long-form video after a live stream or Premiere ends.

YPP thresholds: the first gate, not a guarantee
YouTube’s current monetization overview lists an earlier-access YPP tier and a higher tier. The figures below are YouTube’s published requirements; they can change, so check the linked page and your Studio Earn tab before making plans.
| YPP tier | Published eligibility thresholds | Features listed |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier access | 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. | Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping. |
| Higher tier | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. | Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium, in addition to features available at the earlier tier. |
Meeting a tier’s numbers does not guarantee every feature. Each has separate rules, and paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward YPP thresholds, except for qualifying follow-on views as described by YouTube. Turn on available features individually in YouTube Studio or the Studio mobile app.

Check the content and location rules before enabling a feature
Super Chat and Super Stickers
YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers eligibility and policies require an eligible channel and location, and the relevant terms and policies must be followed. A specific stream or Premiere cannot use them if it is age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, or associated with a YouTube Giving fundraiser. Live chat or comments being disabled also prevents access. YouTube maintains a location list for these features on the policy page.
Super Thanks
The channel must not be set as Made for Kids and must not have a significant number of ineligible or made-for-kids videos. YouTube also says some music channels under SRAV contracts are currently ineligible. An individual video or Short must not be age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, copyright-claimed, associated with a YouTube Giving fundraiser, or have comments turned off. Super Thanks cannot be used while a stream or Premiere is live, though an eligible archived long-form video may qualify afterward. See YouTube’s Super Thanks eligibility and policies for feature-specific location and availability details.

Memberships
Memberships have their own feature rules in addition to the YPP, age, location, and terms baseline. Because YouTube’s availability and requirements can change, use the Earn area in Studio and the current Commerce Products policies rather than assuming that a channel eligible for one fan-funding feature can enable another.
What viewers see and what creators receive
For Super Chat or a Super Sticker, YouTube says the purchase, channel name, profile picture, and purchase amount are publicly visible. Viewers should understand that before buying. YouTube’s viewer guidance also states combined Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Gifts spending limits of up to $500 USD per day or $2,000 USD per week, or the local-currency equivalent; actual limits vary by country or region. These are viewer purchase limits, not creator earnings caps. YouTube says Super Thanks purchases are non-refundable. Some purchases in the YouTube Android app may be billed through Google Play; YouTube says that changes the billing source, not the price or cost.

For Super Thanks, YouTube says the creator receives 70% of revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted; YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This stated share is specific to Super Thanks. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish the same revenue share for channel memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers, so do not apply it to those features.

Fan-funding purchases are not charitable donations. YouTube’s YouTube Giving FAQs describe separate fundraiser functionality; Super Chat and Stickers are unavailable on live streams with Live Chat Donations, while Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with Donations. If a creator intends to raise money for a cause, use the applicable YouTube Giving rules rather than presenting a Super purchase as a donation.

YouTube Shopping is an adjacent monetization path, not a fan-funding feature. Eligible creators may promote products from other brands and earn through Shopping, subject to its separate and changing program eligibility. YouTube lists Shopping separately from memberships and Supers in its monetization overview.
Choose the format that matches your channel
- Offer continuing perks: consider memberships if you can sustain member benefits over time.
- Invite live participation: Super Chat highlights a viewer’s message; Super Stickers add an animated image during eligible live chat or a Premiere.
- Let viewers support a particular upload: Super Thanks can fit an eligible video or Short, including qualifying archived long-form content.
- Check each feature separately: verify location, channel and content eligibility in Studio before announcing that viewers can use it.
- Keep fundraising distinct: use YouTube Giving for eligible charitable fundraising rather than describing a fan-funding purchase as a donation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel uses uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Super Chat or Super Thanks as a donation?
No. YouTube says these paid features are not crowdfunding or donation tools. Use YouTube Giving’s separate fundraiser functionality for charitable fundraising.
How many subscribers do you need for YouTube memberships?
YouTube’s monetization overview lists 500 subscribers among the earlier-access YPP tier requirements, alongside upload and watch-hour or Shorts-view thresholds. That tier does not guarantee membership eligibility; check Studio for feature-specific rules.
