To protect a 24/7 YouTube radio stream from silence, prepare a second audio source in OBS—such as a looping local audio file or another input device—and decide how you will switch to it. A source placed in a scene is not automatic failover: the OBS documentation cited here does not establish built-in silence detection that switches sources for you. YouTube’s backup ingestion URL addresses a different risk: a failed encoder-to-YouTube connection, not a silent program feed.
Choose which failure you need to cover
Start by separating two failure layers. If the radio program audio stops while OBS remains connected, you need alternate audio inside the encoder. If OBS or its connection to YouTube fails, you need a connection or ingestion fallback. These approaches can be used together, but neither substitutes for the other.
| Strategy | What it covers | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Alternate source in OBS | The program feed becomes silent or its audio device fails while OBS continues running. | Choose manual switching or separately verified automation; confirm the source is available and audible, check its level, and ensure you have rights to use the fallback content. |
| YouTube backup ingestion path | The primary encoder connection or ingestion path fails. | YouTube’s documented backup server URL instructions here are for HLS. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and primary and backup stream settings must match. |
Set up an alternate audio source in OBS
1. Choose suitable fallback audio
Pick a source that OBS can access if the main program feed fails. Options include a second audio input device or a local audio file added as a Media Source. A local file can provide continuity, but it will not recreate the live program. You might use a suitable fallback playlist or station ident; make sure the rights cover that use. The sources cited here do not determine your music-licensing obligations.
OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files and includes a Loop option. For a file intended to continue playing, enable Loop in the source settings. Adding the source to a scene only makes it available; it does not itself detect silence or switch automatically. See OBS’s Media Sources guide and Audio Sources guide.

2. Decide how switching will happen
Plan the handoff before going live. An operator can switch to the fallback when they notice the main feed has stopped. If you need unattended switching, use an automation method whose silence detection and switching behavior you have independently verified. The OBS source and mixer documentation cited here does not establish built-in automatic silence-triggered switching.
3. Check for a usable signal
Watch the OBS audio mixer meters while the fallback is playing, and monitor the source through headphones or another monitoring output. A moving meter confirms audio is reaching OBS; listening helps catch silence, distortion, or an unsuitable level. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains its mixer and monitoring controls.

If you capture a device as a scene-specific source, check whether that same device is also selected as a global audio device. Capturing it twice can produce echo; disable the duplicate global device if you are using the scene-specific capture.
4. Test the handoff
Before relying on the setup, make a recording or test stream. Deliberately simulate the failure you are preparing for—for example, stop the main audio source while leaving OBS connected—and confirm the fallback reaches the encoder at a suitable level. If switching is manual, verify the operator can identify the failure and select the fallback. If you use automation, test its detection and switch behavior rather than assuming that a configured source will activate itself.

Configure YouTube ingestion redundancy separately
For a backup connection path, YouTube Help’s Set up an HLS stream instructions say: “If you need a backup ingestion, copy the ‘Backup server URL.’” The instructions apply to HLS ingestion and require an HLS-capable encoder; they are not a general backup-audio feature. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
Match primary and backup settings
YouTube warns that primary and backup streams need matching settings for failover to work properly. Its listed checks include resolution, video and audio codecs, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and audio channels. Use Live Control Room’s health indicator to check for configuration errors. See YouTube’s Live streaming error messages.

YouTube’s HLS recommendations include AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio codecs, a sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are HLS-specific recommendations, not universal settings for RTMP streams.
