YouTube Live Control Room Says “Bad Video Settings” with an H.265 RTMP Encoder: How to Fix It

YouTube supports H.265 over RTMP/RTMPS, but incorrect GOP, keyframe, container, track, or output settings can still trigger “Bad video settings.”

H.265 (HEVC) is supported by YouTube for RTMP and RTMPS, so the codec alone does not explain a “Bad video settings” warning. The label can cover several different problems—including an open GOP, keyframes arriving too slowly, an unsupported container, or multiple video streams. Get the detailed health issue first, then check the setting it names.

Why YouTube may report bad video settings

YouTube lists H.265 (HEVC), H.264, and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. That does not guarantee every encoder’s HEVC output is configured correctly: container, GOP structure, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and stream tracks can still trigger a health warning. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its Live API health reference distinguish these issues.

“Bad video settings” is a summary, not a diagnosis. YouTube’s health reference associates it with issue types including badContainer, multipleVideoStreams, openGop, and videoCodec. Other health issues cover resolution, bitrate, keyframe cadence, and differences between primary and backup streams. Without the complete warning and actual encoder settings, there is no basis to conclude that this particular stream must switch codecs.

Start with the detailed health message

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s health or stream status details and copy the full message, including any specific issue description. Do not stop at the short “Bad video settings” label.
  2. If you use the YouTube Live API, inspect status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[] for the issue type, description, and severity. YouTube documents these fields in its health status reference.
  3. Match that issue to the corresponding check below. If several issues appear, address each one; a video-settings summary does not rule out a separate audio or backup-stream warning.

Match the warning to the encoder setting

Open GOP or keyframes too far apart

If the issue is openGop, configure the encoder for a closed GOP. YouTube’s health reference identifies open GOP as unsupported. For keyframe cadence, YouTube recommends one keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Issue types such as gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver point to a keyframe interval that is too long. Check the interval actually emitted by the encoder rather than relying only on a preset label. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings guidance gives the cadence recommendation.

Unsupported codec, wrong container, or more than one video stream

For a videoCodec issue, confirm the actual encoded bitstream uses a supported codec; HEVC is on YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS list, but a menu selection does not prove what the stream contains. For badContainer, check the emitted container and its compatibility with the stream. For multipleVideoStreams, inspect the output tracks and make sure the stream does not carry unintended additional video. The health reference defines these as distinct issue types, so do not treat the word “H.265” as the diagnosis.

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Compare the actual output against YouTube’s current encoder table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. The bitrate ranges differ by codec; do not copy an H.264 figure into an H.265 configuration. YouTube’s current table lists these minimum and recommended bitrates for RTMP/RTMPS, in Mbps:

1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current published operational recommendations, not guarantees that an encoder or connection will sustain the selected output. Its RTMP/RTMPS settings table supports up to 60 fps and specifies CBR encoding. It also recommends testing upload capacity; as YouTube puts it, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Use the codec-specific rows and the intended output format in the current YouTube encoder table.

Primary and backup encodes

If you send primary and backup streams, compare their codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and bitrate. YouTube reports mismatches between primary and backup configurations as their own issue class. Correct the mismatch identified by the detailed health message rather than assuming the primary encoder’s visible settings describe both outputs.

Audio alerts alongside a video warning

Check the full health report for separate audio issues, including codec, sample rate, and channel configuration. A short video-settings summary may appear while another stream configuration issue also needs attention; use the detailed issue list to avoid overlooking it.

HDR streams need HDR-specific settings

If the intended output is HDR, do not troubleshoot it as ordinary SDR. YouTube’s current HDR live guidance specifies H.265/HEVC and 10-bit HDR settings; Live Control Room setup allows RTMP(S) or HLS for HDR. For OBS, YouTube specifies version 30.1 or newer, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. The Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so preview appearance alone cannot verify HDR color output. Follow YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions for the target color format.

Test the corrected stream before an event

  1. Apply the change that corresponds to the reported issue—for example, closed GOP for openGop, or a two-second keyframe interval when cadence is too long.
  2. Start a test stream with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and any backup encode.
  3. Include representative motion and audio, then monitor the health status and detailed messages during the test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring before going live to an audience.
  4. If the warning remains, record the updated full message and the encoder’s actual output configuration. That evidence is more useful than changing codecs at random.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Switching to H.264 immediately: HEVC is supported over RTMP/RTMPS. First find the detailed issue; changing codecs may leave a container, GOP, or multiple-track problem untouched.
  • Trusting a preset name: verify the emitted codec, container, track count, GOP mode, keyframe interval, and actual resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  • Using an H.264 bitrate target for HEVC: consult YouTube’s codec-specific table for the selected format.
  • Checking only the primary stream: if backup encoding is configured, compare its settings and inspect any corresponding health issue.
  • Judging HDR from the Control Room preview: YouTube says the preview does not display HDR colors; verify the encoder’s HDR output settings instead.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo sends the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It does not diagnose or fix an encoder’s bad-settings warning; use the health-message steps above to resolve that issue. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
