There is no evidence-backed single “best GPU” for encoding a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist. Choose a GPU with a dedicated hardware encoder that supports a codec YouTube accepts, then verify that your complete system can sustain one 4K60 stream without dropped frames, overheating, or unstable upload. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 4K60, or 50 Mbps for H.264. Those are encoder bitrate recommendations, not guarantees of reliable internet service.
What matters more than the GPU name
A 24/7 playlist is a continuous-use system, not just a short encoding benchmark. A GPU’s advertised encoder throughput cannot by itself establish that a particular card will run your playlist reliably around the clock. The available NVIDIA throughput figures are measured at 1920 × 1080, not 4K, and the available Intel Arc A380 material does not provide an independent continuous 4K60 comparison.
Prioritize these factors when assessing a specific build:
- Codec support: Confirm the encoder can produce a format accepted by YouTube and the streaming software you plan to use. NVIDIA’s guide identifies AV1 and HEVC options on supported RTX hardware; Intel’s A380 product guide describes AV1 hardware acceleration.
- Single-stream performance: Look for independent measurements of one 4K60 encode, including image quality and dropped frames. Multi-encoder capacity is not, by itself, a reason to buy a higher-end card for a single stream.
- Sustained operation: Consider power, temperatures, cooling, and system stability in the actual case. The official material cited here does not certify a consumer GPU for 24/7 uptime.
- Whole-system fit: Check driver and OBS support, CPU and memory requirements, power supply, storage needs, warranty, and current local price.
NVIDIA says NVENC is a dedicated part of the GPU, separate from graphics and CUDA cores. That can offload encoding from the CPU and graphics work, but it does not prove a given card can sustain this exact workload. NVIDIA’s application note reports 624 fps for Blackwell and 512 fps for Ada in a specified AV1 P5 CBR/low-latency test, but those are vendor-reported 1080p figures under stated test conditions—not 4K60 results, independent comparisons, or evidence of continuous-duty thermals and reliability.

Set the stream for YouTube’s 4K60 ingest targets
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives these 4K60 figures. They describe the bitrate sent to YouTube; YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers.
| Ingest codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate | Recommended comparison at 1440p60 | Recommended comparison at 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
The lower resolutions are included for comparison, not as substitutes for testing a 4K60 setup. A bitrate recommendation does not guarantee image quality or a stable connection. Your upload must sustain the chosen bitrate continuously, with headroom for normal network variation.

Configure and test the encoder
- Choose the output resolution and frame rate: Set 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps in your encoder if the source playlist and system can sustain them. YouTube’s Live Control Room needs the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate configured or detected.
- Select an ingest-compatible codec: Use AV1 or H.265 only if your encoder, software, and YouTube ingest configuration support the combination. Otherwise, use H.264 and its corresponding bitrate target. NVIDIA’s guide recommends AV1 for supported RTX GPUs, but its interface instructions may change with OBS and driver versions.
- Set bitrate and rate control deliberately: Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen codec and resolution as the starting target. NVIDIA’s OBS guide suggests CBR; do not treat SDK tuning recommendations for other applications as a replacement for a compatible streaming setup.
- Test with representative content: Run a test using movement and audio similar to the playlist, including transitions between videos. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Watch the whole path: Monitor encoder load, dropped frames, network status, temperatures, and YouTube stream health during a sustained test. A successful short test is not proof that the system will remain stable indefinitely.
NVIDIA’s SDK describes CBR, VBR, and constant-QP as distinct rate-control options. Its suggestions for high-quality tuning, a medium VBV buffer, B-frames, look-ahead, a finite two-second GOP, and adaptive quantization are starting guidance for certain Turing-and-newer use cases—not universal OBS settings. NVIDIA also warns that CUDA-accelerated look-ahead can affect smoothness when GPU utilization is high. If using that feature, test under the actual workload rather than assuming the GPU has spare capacity.
Plan the 24/7 system, not just the encode
A continuous channel depends on the host, power, network, playlist, and recovery plan as well as the encoder. Before relying on it, test the complete playlist and decide what should happen after a host restart, power interruption, network outage, or encoder failure. Keep an eye on stream health and have a way to restore the broadcast. The official encoder and GPU materials do not specify a complete automatic recovery design.

- Verify YouTube eligibility: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It lists concurrent limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; both limits apply.
- Protect the stream key: Treat the key as a credential. Enter it only in the intended encoder or service, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Check content rights: Confirm you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track in the playlist. A continuous stream does not grant permission to rebroadcast material.
- Plan local storage if recording: Recording alongside streaming consumes disk space. NVIDIA and AMD warn that archive size depends on recording settings and session length; neither provides a universal retention estimate for this use.
DIY GPU streaming or cloud looping?
For a local build, use a compatible hardware encoder, meet YouTube’s bitrate target, test representative playlist content, and plan for power, network, monitoring, storage, and recovery. The trade-off is that the computer and its connection remain part of the broadcast path.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | Upload stability, bitrate, and whether other network traffic is competing for bandwidth | Test the connection under sustained load, reduce competing traffic, and lower the output resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target. |
| Encoder or rendering lag | GPU utilization, encoder selection, and demanding options such as CUDA look-ahead | Test with look-ahead disabled if enabled, then retest the playlist and stream health. Confirm the selected hardware encoder is actually in use. |
| Broadcast stops after a local interruption | Host power, network recovery, and whether the encoder restarts and reconnects | Test restart and reconnection behavior before depending on the system; arrange monitoring and a recovery procedure. |
| Local recording fills storage | Recording enabled, available disk space, and archive retention settings | Allow adequate storage or disable local recording if it is not needed. File size varies with profile and session duration. |
| Unable to start or maintain a YouTube live stream | Channel verification, restrictions, stream-key configuration, and concurrent-stream limits | Check eligibility in YouTube Studio, verify the key is correct, and ensure the channel and key are within their respective active-stream limits. |
