If FFmpeg cannot publish to YouTube from a Windows VPS, check the current stream key and ingest URL first, then verify RTMPS support and outbound TCP 443 connectivity. An India-based VPS alone does not identify the cause. Work through the checks below in order; the failure message and YouTube Live Control Room status help distinguish a key problem from a protocol, encoding, or network issue.
1. Match the key and server URL to the correct YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream, or open the scheduled event you intend to use. Copy the stream key and server URL shown for that stream, then update the FFmpeg destination. The key and URL are a pair: a key from another event or an old configuration may not match the stream you are checking. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
If FFmpeg or YouTube reports a key error at startup, YouTube recommends getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it in a public issue, screenshot, or example command. Keep it out of logs and messages you send for troubleshooting where possible. 2. Verify the ingest URL and RTMPS protocol
Use the server URL displayed for the current stream, not a guessed hostname or an old example. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. To get the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon beside Stream URL in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, the URL needs the rtmps scheme and a valid YouTube endpoint and application path; YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion uses TCP port 443. If an SSL error persists, YouTube Help suggests trying :443 in the URL or encoder port field. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS Help and the RTMPS ingestion guide.

Do not append the key to the URL by guesswork: use the format expected by your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current stream settings. A malformed URL, unsupported protocol, or unreachable endpoint can fail before YouTube checks whether the key is valid.
3. Check the FFmpeg build installed on the VPS
The relevant executable is the ffmpeg.exe installed on the Windows VPS—not a build on your local computer. Confirm that this build supports the RTMP variant you selected. If it does not, install a current build that includes the needed protocol support. FFmpeg documents its RTMP-family protocols and a real-time file-streaming example at FFmpeg protocols.

When supplying a file, -re paces input in real time. It does not repair an incorrect key, URL, or blocked connection. FFmpeg’s documented example is:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream

For YouTube, replace the example destination with the current Live Control Room ingest URL and key, using the syntax supported by your installed build. Do not publish a command containing your actual key. If you are relaying a live input rather than a file, inspect the input health and timestamps separately; the file example does not diagnose those problems.
4. Use the error and stream status to identify the failing layer

YouTube’s stream-health reporting can identify issues such as unsupported audio or video codecs, missing media streams, bitrate warnings, and keyframe problems. Its LiveStreams API guidance describes a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less for the GOP issue threshold. These checks apply once data reaches YouTube; they cannot establish that the key is correct if FFmpeg cannot connect. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.

5. Check Windows firewall and VPS egress
- Check Windows Defender Firewall. Verify that the FFmpeg process or outbound connection is permitted for the RTMPS connection on TCP 443.
- Check the VPS control panel. Review any firewall or security policy that could restrict outbound connections.
- Ask the hosting provider if needed. If TCP 443 still cannot reach the YouTube endpoint, ask whether outbound TCP 443 or sustained RTMPS is restricted and request connection-level diagnostics.
- Test outbound connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance calls for checking the outbound internet connection when delivery is in question.
The appropriate Windows Server firewall steps depend on the server version and configuration; provider network controls also vary. The available guidance does not establish a specific restriction for India or for any particular VPS company. Location by itself is not evidence that egress is blocked.
6. Keep the diagnosis focused
- Change one layer at a time: key and event, URL and protocol, FFmpeg support, then firewall and route.
- Use Live Control Room’s preview and health messages after FFmpeg establishes a connection; they are more useful than guessing from a local command alone.
- If you ask for help, share the sanitized command, exact error text, FFmpeg version/build details, and relevant firewall/provider information. Remove the stream key first.
