To stream 4K at 60 fps from Ubuntu, use OBS Studio with an NVIDIA GPU, driver and OBS build that expose a compatible NVENC encoder. In OBS, set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and choose the YouTube-recommended bitrate for your ingest codec: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Send the stream over RTMPS, then test realistic motion and audio and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Before you configure OBS: confirm your GPU, driver and codec

NVENC availability depends on the NVIDIA GPU, its driver, the installed OBS version and the codec you intend to use. OBS documents NVENC support on Linux and gives GeForce 750 Ti, Maxwell 900-series or newer as general hardware guidance; that does not mean every GPU in those families supports every current codec or can encode every 4K60 workload reliably. Check what your actual OBS installation offers before planning a broadcast.

Version notes matter. OBS 31.0.4 states that NVIDIA Kepler 600/700-series GPUs are no longer supported for NVENC and notes that NVIDIA Linux users may need driver 550.54.14 or newer for that release. Those are notes for OBS 31.0.4, not a universal requirement for every OBS version. Check the release notes for your installed build and the codec capabilities of your specific GPU.

  • In OBS, open Settings and inspect the available encoder choices under Output. If an NVIDIA NVENC option is missing, confirm the NVIDIA driver is installed and loaded, restart if the driver installation requires it, and check that your OBS package supports the system.
  • If NVENC appears but the required codec does not, do not assume that installing a newer OBS build alone will add hardware support. Verify the GPU’s encoder capabilities and driver compatibility.
  • Use Ubuntu’s supported driver guidance and tooling to install NVIDIA drivers. Ubuntu notes that if an obsolete driver branch is requested, its tooling moves to a supported branch.

Install OBS using a route documented for your Ubuntu release

OBS documents an official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer and also offers Flatpak. Use the installation route currently documented for your Ubuntu release rather than copying commands for a different version. The appropriate package route can affect how OBS interacts with drivers and devices, so verify encoder availability in the installed application.

Choose a YouTube ingest codec and bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and recommends CBR. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, the recommended ingest bitrate depends on the codec; there is no single correct bitrate for all three.

Ingest codec YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 4K/2160p60 YouTube’s listed minimum Practical consideration
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps Use this recommendation when H.264 is the compatible encoder option.
H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps 10 Mbps YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR; HDR also requires a deliberately configured 10-bit pipeline.
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, inspected in 2026, not guaranteed image-quality results or a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. The listed minimums are floors, not the recommended targets. Select a codec available in your GPU/driver/OBS combination and accepted by YouTube. If your hardware or connection cannot sustain that combination, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than treating the 4K60 target as met.

If you are considering HDR, configure the capture and encoding pipeline intentionally. YouTube’s guidance specifies H.265 and 10-bit for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For a typical SDR documentary stream, use Rec. 709 rather than enabling HDR without a compatible source and workflow.

Set OBS video and streaming output

  1. Set the video dimensions and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution and output (scaled) resolution to 3840Ă—2160 and set the common frame rate to 60. If your source is not 4K or your system cannot encode the output smoothly, scaling it to 4K does not create missing source detail and may add workload.
  2. Choose the NVIDIA encoder. Open Settings > Output and select the streaming output mode and the NVIDIA NVENC encoder option available in your installed OBS build. Choose H.264, H.265 or AV1 only if that option is supported by the GPU, driver and OBS version and accepted by YouTube.
  3. Set rate control and bitrate. Set rate control to CBR, then use the codec-specific YouTube recommendation: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/AV1 at 4K60. Do not use the H.264 figure for H.265 or AV1.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. Enter 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
  5. Keep the other stream characteristics compatible. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. OBS labels and exposes advanced encoder controls differently across versions and encoders; set a value only when the installed encoder offers it, and do not force a control that is unavailable.
  6. Configure audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, with 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only. Check that the selected OBS audio track and channel layout match the audio you actually intend to send.

OBS’s NVENC guidance also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Some of its additional preset and tuning advice is older; prioritize YouTube’s current ingest guidance and the controls available in your installed OBS version.

Create the YouTube stream and connect it securely

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and retrieve its current stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the relevant YouTube service option if available, and enter the server/stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. If OBS presents a server field, use the current RTMPS details supplied for that broadcast.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not include it in screenshots, recordings or public chat; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings before broadcasting.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and confirm that YouTube receives the signal in the intended broadcast. Wait for the platform’s preview and stream-health information before making the broadcast public or starting the event.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the transfer to its servers. YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers, so your outgoing 4K60 configuration is not a guarantee that every viewer receives 4K60.

Test the complete stream before an event

A settings checklist cannot establish that your particular GPU, capture workload and internet connection will remain stable. YouTube advises testing before going live, running a speed test, and testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event.

  • Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder-overload indicators alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. Network drops and encoding overload point to different parts of the setup and should not be treated as the same fault.
  • Check the connection’s upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube does not give a universal upload-overhead margin in the guidance summarized here, so do not treat any fixed extra margin as an official requirement.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
No NVIDIA encoder appears in OBS. Driver loading, GPU support, OBS build or package environment. Confirm Ubuntu has loaded the supported NVIDIA driver, restart if required, and check the OBS version and installation route. Confirm the GPU is supported by that version; the OBS 31.0.4 Kepler limitation is specific to that release.
NVENC appears, but H.265 or AV1 does not. Codec capability of the specific GPU/driver/build combination. Check the GPU’s supported encoder modes and installed driver and OBS compatibility. Use another codec that both the actual encoder and YouTube support, then set the corresponding bitrate.
YouTube does not receive the stream. Stream URL, stream key, selected service or transport settings. Copy the current URL and key from the intended broadcast in Live Control Room, check the OBS stream fields, and use the RTMPS details YouTube provides. Keep the key private.
YouTube reports poor stream health or OBS shows dropped frames. Upload connection or ingest path. Run an upload speed test, verify the selected bitrate is sustainable in practice, and inspect YouTube’s health messages. Test again under representative conditions; reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the connection cannot carry the target reliably.
OBS reports encoder overload or frames do not encode smoothly. GPU encoding workload, output configuration or other GPU load. Confirm that the GPU supports the selected codec and workload, check that the output is actually configured as intended, and test again. If the hardware cannot encode the target reliably, lower the resolution or frame rate.
The stream looks softer than expected on some screens. Source detail, YouTube processing or viewer playback conditions. Confirm the source itself has the detail you expect and that YouTube has received the intended stream. Remember that YouTube transcodes the live input into viewer formats; the outgoing setting alone does not guarantee a viewer’s resolution.

Copyright and monetization for documentary footage

Technical compliance does not establish that you have the rights to stream the material. Before broadcasting a documentary, clips, music, archival footage or narration, confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission or another valid legal basis for the use. A live encoder setting cannot prevent a copyright claim or resolve whether a particular use is lawful. Keep licensing records available and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the documentary is a prerecorded video or playlist that you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, the video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
