You can broadcast an internet radio station on YouTube by running radio playout and an audio/video encoder on a rented VPS, then sending the encoded feed to YouTube Live. The VPS creates and sends the stream; YouTube supplies the live broadcast destination and its incoming-stream settings. A practical setup uses Liquidsoap for playout, FFmpeg for encoding, and RTMPS for secure ingest.

What runs on the VPS—and what runs on YouTube

The VPS is your always-on source: it selects or receives audio, adds a video track, encodes the audio and video, and sends the result to YouTube. YouTube is the destination, where you configure the incoming stream and the broadcast event. These are separate resources in YouTube’s live-streaming model, so plan whether you want one continuous feed or distinct scheduled broadcasts rather than assuming one automatically creates the other (Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams).

Liquidsoap can provide radio automation and route audio through an FFmpeg encoder toward YouTube. Its book illustrates this architecture, including a YouTube streaming destination, but the example is technical guidance rather than a guarantee that every line will work unchanged with current software. Check syntax against the Liquidsoap and FFmpeg versions installed on your VPS (The Liquidsoap book).

Plan the station before configuring it

Prepare the audio source

Organize the files or live inputs that make up the station, and decide how playout should move between them: for example, a playlist, rotation, or scheduled programming. If you add a live presenter or other live input, account for how it enters the playout chain. The exact automation design depends on your programming; the important technical requirement is that the VPS can continuously supply audio to the encoder.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a video track

YouTube Live expects an audio-and-video feed for this workflow. A radio station can pair its audio with a static station image or a simple visualizer, as long as the encoder outputs a video format YouTube accepts. Treat the visual as part of the encoded stream, not as a substitute for the audio source.

Choose the broadcast shape

A single persistent incoming feed and separate scheduled broadcast events are different ways to organize a channel. Decide which fits your programming and audience experience, then configure the broadcast and stream accordingly in YouTube. Account-specific live eligibility, event limits, maximum duration, and archive behavior are not covered here; check the current status and settings shown for your channel before relying on them.

Set up YouTube Live and protect your stream key

  1. Confirm channel access. Open YouTube Studio and check that live streaming is available for your channel. Follow any channel-specific activation or restriction messages shown there.
  2. Create or select the broadcast and incoming stream. In the live control room, configure the broadcast event if you are using one, and obtain the current stream key and server/ingest details for the incoming stream. Keep the broadcast event and the stream configuration straight: they are related but distinct resources.
  3. Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube’s documented RTMPS ingestion uses port 443. Use the server/application path provided for your stream rather than assuming an endpoint from an old configuration (Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide).
  4. Store the key privately. Do not put the stream key in a public script repository, screenshot, screen recording, or logs. Keep it in a separate, access-restricted configuration or secret file and have the playout/encoding process read it at runtime. Liquidsoap’s book demonstrates separating the key from the main script.
  5. Start the VPS feed, then verify YouTube receives it. Check the live control room for incoming video/audio and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or relying on it.

Choose encoder settings that match the video you send

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the row for your actual output mode instead of treating one bitrate as universal (YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Setting What to use or verify
Ingest RTMPS where supported; Google documents port 443 for RTMPS.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed by YouTube.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube.
Bitrate mode Constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Keyframes Recommended interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio sample rate and bitrate For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Example video mode If you choose 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps. This is specific to that mode, not an audio bitrate or a general VPS sizing rule.

For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use the matching recommendations on YouTube’s settings page. These encoder values describe the outgoing stream, not the CPU or network capacity of a particular VPS. No server size can be declared adequate from bitrate alone; workload and available outbound bandwidth must be checked on the service you choose.

Build and launch the playout-to-YouTube chain

  1. Install and verify the software. Set up Liquidsoap and FFmpeg on the VPS, and confirm the installed versions and their supported options. The Liquidsoap book’s example may need adaptation to those versions.
  2. Configure radio playout. Define the audio source or sources, playlist behavior, and transitions in Liquidsoap. Confirm that the playout produces uninterrupted audio before attaching the YouTube destination.
  3. Add an accepted video source. Configure a static image or visualizer as the video component, then combine it with the radio audio in the encoder output. Ensure the resulting codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the current ingest endpoint and the stream key stored outside public code. Prefer the secure RTMPS path and make sure the VPS can make an outbound connection on port 443.
  5. Run a private test and inspect the result. Verify that YouTube receives both audio and video, that the station’s transitions work, and that stream health does not report problems before you schedule or promote the broadcast.
  6. Arrange process recovery and monitoring. Decide how the VPS will restart the playout/encoder process after a failure, and monitor both the server process and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring health during the event.

Liquidsoap’s documentation illustrates the route from radio output through FFmpeg to a YouTube destination, but exact commands depend on your software versions and station configuration. Use that example as an architectural reference rather than copying it blindly (The Liquidsoap book).

Test the stream and troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that the encoder is running, the endpoint and key match the current stream configuration, and outbound RTMPS traffic on port 443 is allowed. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the VPS secret.
  • Audio arrives but video does not: Confirm the encoder is actually producing a video track from the image or visualizer, and that the selected video codec and output mode are supported.
  • Audio is silent or cuts out: Check the Liquidsoap source and playlist transitions first, then verify the encoder’s audio input and codec. Test with the same kind of audio transitions intended for the live station.
  • YouTube reports stream-health problems: Compare the sent codec, CBR setting, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against the current YouTube recommendation for the selected mode. Do not raise bitrate without checking both the matching YouTube recommendation and the VPS’s actual network capacity.
  • The feed stops after a server or process issue: Check whether the VPS is reachable and whether the playout and encoder processes are still running. Configure process supervision or restart behavior appropriate to your server, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed again.
  • The settings differ from an old example: Trust the current YouTube live control room and encoder-settings page for the active stream. Endpoint details, available options, and software syntax can change.

Account for music rights and operating costs

Music rights are separate from technical setup

Having audio files does not establish permission to broadcast them. Rights requirements depend on the catalog, territory, and intended use, and the technical setup does not resolve those questions. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music and territories involved, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before broadcasting.

Estimate VPS capacity and cost from your actual workload

A VPS avoids needing a physical server at home, but the material available here does not establish a suitable provider, server size, price, outbound data allowance, CPU benchmark, or uptime guarantee. Test your chosen audio/video chain on the specific VPS plan, including its network limits, before depending on it for continuous programming. Video encoding can require more CPU than audio playout alone, so measure the full workload rather than using the stream bitrate as a sizing shortcut.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded programming looping on a YouTube channel without maintaining a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.
