To go live automatically at a chosen time, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and separately configure an encoder or cloud service that can play the playlist and start sending it on schedule. Confirm that the service supports both tasks; YouTube’s auto-start setting is not, by itself, a playlist scheduler.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
A scheduled event gives your broadcast a time and a watch page that you can share; viewers may also receive reminders. The outgoing video feed is a separate part of the setup: an encoder or streaming service must send video and audio to YouTube, and it must be able to play the prerecorded playlist and automate the start if you want the whole process to happen without you.
YouTube describes its auto-start and auto-stop controls as allowing you to start or stop streaming from the encoder. That setting does not establish that YouTube Studio can schedule playlist playback. Check the current documentation for your chosen encoder or service to verify it can advance through the playlist and start the stream at the event time.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming. Make sure the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Open the event scheduler. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open Manage, then select Schedule stream.
- Set up the event. Reuse a previous stream’s settings or create a new stream. Enter the event details, choose its time and privacy, then save it. Keep the stream URL and stream key available for the encoder. Scheduling makes the event shareable and eligible for viewer reminders.
- Check privacy and access. Confirm that the watch page will be accessible to the intended audience. YouTube’s default privacy can vary with the creator’s age, and you can change the setting.
For the exact current workflow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

Make the prerecorded playlist start automatically
- Choose a playlist-capable encoder or service. Confirm in its current documentation that it can play the videos in the intended order, send the output to YouTube, and trigger both playlist playback and stream start at the scheduled time. Do not assume that support for scheduled broadcasts or encoder auto-start includes playlist automation.
- Connect it to the scheduled stream. Use the stream URL and key for the event. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Configure the playlist and schedule. Set the video order, any repeat behavior you need, and the start time in the encoder or service. Verify whether it starts playback and connects to YouTube automatically, and what it does if a video ends, the connection drops, or the encoder restarts.
- Decide how YouTube auto-start fits. If you enable YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop controls, verify that the chosen automation application works with them. YouTube documents these as encoder start/stop controls, not as controls for scheduling a prerecorded playlist.
- Test the complete chain. Run a representative test that includes the actual playlist, audio, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and network path. Check that the correct event appears in Live Control Room and that its preview, picture, sound, and stream health look right before relying on unattended playback.
Configure a 4K 60fps feed
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists these 2160p at 60 fps ingestion bitrates. They are settings for the feed sent to YouTube—not a guarantee that your source, encoder, upload connection, or viewers can sustain 4K60.
| Codec | YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
YouTube’s broader encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For 4K, the low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and match the encoder to the codec and bitrate you intend to send.

A test is essential: use representative motion and audio, then monitor the Live Control Room preview and stream health. A bitrate within YouTube’s stated range cannot compensate for an unstable upload connection or an encoder that cannot sustain the selected format.
Preflight before the scheduled start
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event’s scheduled time. For an automated playlist, verify what “start” means in your service: it should give you time to check the incoming feed before viewers expect the event.
- Open the scheduled watch page and confirm its privacy and availability.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, picture, audio, and stream health while the encoder is connected.
- Confirm that the playlist starts at the intended item and advances as expected.
- Have a plan for a failed connection or a stopped encoder. Confirm whether your software retries or restarts automatically rather than assuming YouTube will restart playlist playback.

Optional 4K hardware encoding
YouTube’s verified encoder list includes the Osprey Video Talon, which is described as accepting sources up to true 4K and delivering feeds up to 4K60p. YouTube notes that verified encoders are made by third parties, not YouTube. This is an optional hardware encoding route; the listing does not establish that the device schedules or plays a prerecorded playlist. Check the device’s current specifications and playlist-control compatibility before buying it for this workflow. A 4K hardware video encoder can produce an appropriate feed, but it does not by itself solve playlist automation.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded video or playlist to keep running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not start a camera feed. Troubleshooting
The event is scheduled, but nothing is playing
Scheduling creates the event, not the video feed. Check that the encoder or service is configured to play the playlist and connect to YouTube at the intended time. Verify that its schedule and the YouTube event time match.
The encoder connects, but the playlist does not start
Check the automation settings for playlist playback separately from stream connection and encoder start. Confirm the playlist is available to the service and that its playback order and start item are correct.

The event is not visible to the intended viewers
Check the event’s privacy setting and the watch page. A scheduled event may exist without being publicly accessible if its privacy is set differently from what you intended.
The 4K60 feed is unstable or fails to appear in preview
Check the encoder’s selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, constant-bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Then test the upload connection and monitor Live Control Room stream health; the published bitrate guidance does not guarantee that a particular encoder or connection can sustain the feed.
The stream stops after a drop
Check whether the encoder or service retries the connection and resumes playlist playback. YouTube’s auto-stop and auto-start controls do not, on their own, establish that the playlist will resume. Test recovery before depending on an unattended broadcast.
The stream is delayed compared with the scheduled time
For 4K, YouTube uses normal latency rather than the low-latency option. Also check whether the encoder was connected early enough to preview the feed before the event time.
