In YouTube Studio, create an encoder stream, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, build a scene with the audio feed and visualizer, then test the preview before clicking Go live. Confirm you have rights to broadcast the music before you start.
Before you set up the broadcast
Check live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before announcing a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
Clear the music rights
Make sure you are authorized to broadcast every recording and track in the station’s program, including for the relevant territory and continuous live use. A visualizer, artist credit, or valid stream key does not grant music rights. The technical setup instructions do not determine whether a particular catalog is cleared; resolve that separately before streaming.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.

In the Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream. YouTube displays a server URL and stream key for the encoder connection.

Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: it directs your encoder feed to the right stream. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the current Studio labels and stream controls.
Build an OBS scene with station audio and a visualizer
Add the station feed
Add the output from your radio automation or playback system as an audio source in OBS. Confirm that the source is active in the mixer and that the intended program—not an unused microphone or desktop audio—is reaching the stream. A microphone is optional for music-only broadcasting; add one only if you plan to make live announcements or record voiceovers.
Add and position the visualizer
Add an audio visualizer source to the same OBS scene and configure it to listen to the station program feed. Size and position it so it remains visible within the video frame. One option is Waveform, an OBS plugin whose listing describes frequency-spectrum graphs, bar and circular displays, meters, and waveform modes. The listing reports version 1.9.1, an update dated July 14, 2026, Windows, macOS, and Linux support, and a minimum OBS version of 27.0.0. Check the current listing and compatibility with your installed OBS before installing; plugin behavior can vary by system.

Test the actual scene
Make a private or unlisted test stream and verify that the visualizer reacts to the correct audio source. Watch the result from another device, check that the picture fills the intended frame, and listen for clean, continuous audio. Test with representative music and movement, not just a silent scene, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public.
Choose video and audio settings that fit your connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. The following video rates are its recommended H.264 values; use the row that matches your resolution and frame rate. YouTube publishes different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply H.264 figures to another codec.

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Its general encoder guidance calls for H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. For stereo audio, the guidance lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. Confirm that the values you set in OBS match the codec and profile selected for the stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Measure available upload speed and leave at least 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Count audio as well as video when assessing the total. A wired connection can help avoid local wireless variation, but the essential check is whether sustained upload capacity has adequate headroom. If it does not, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast

Start streaming from OBS after confirming the correct scene and stream key.

Wait for the preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check picture, audio levels, and stream health.

When the preview is ready and the output is correct, click Go live in the Live Control Room.

Monitor the stream while it runs. When finished, click End stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, plan to preserve a local recording if you need a copy; do not assume an archive will be available for a stream that exceeds that threshold.

No preview appears: Check that OBS is sending to the server URL and stream key for the selected Live Control Room stream, then confirm OBS is actively streaming. If the key may be incorrect or compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

The visualizer is flat or responds to the wrong sound: Change its input to the station program source, verify that source is active in the OBS mixer, and test while representative program audio is playing.

The stream buffers or loses health: Compare the actual total bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; reduce the output profile if the connection cannot support it steadily.

The plugin is missing or does not behave as expected: Check the Waveform listing’s supported operating systems and minimum OBS version, and verify you installed a compatible current build. Test the plugin in a private or unlisted stream before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

Audio is silent or distorted: Confirm the station feed is the source routed to the scene, inspect OBS mixer levels, and listen to a test stream from a separate device before going public.
