Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A 24/7 linear YouTube channel is a continuous, scheduled live broadcast: a playout system supplies programs in sequence, and an encoder sends the feed to YouTube Live. To build one, plan the schedule and rights, enable live streaming, connect an encoder or cloud playout service with a YouTube stream key, test the feed, and decide how you will handle monitoring, restarts, and archives. A continuous broadcast needs an operating plan—not just a stream button.
Choose what the channel will broadcast
Start by deciding whether the feed is live camera, scheduled original programs, prerecorded licensed material, or a mix. The source determines the playout design: a camera-based channel needs a live input, while a prerecorded channel needs a system that queues and repeats or schedules uploaded programs.
Before scheduling anything, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video, music track, graphic, and other included material. Keep ownership records and license terms where the operator can find them. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use a program does not guarantee that a repetitive or reused-content channel can monetize.
Pick a playout and encoder setup
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A local computer running encoder software can suit a modest setup; dedicated hardware may fit an installation with specific operational requirements. Either local approach depends on the device, power, and internet connection remaining available. For prerecorded programming, a cloud playout service can run the uploaded schedule without a home computer staying on.

Compare options by asking whether they handle your source type, how they respond to interruptions, what local computer and upload capacity they require, how you secure the stream key, how you will archive broadcasts, whether they support the ingest settings you need, and what the cost and support terms are. YouTube’s encoder directory includes products such as CamStreamer for supported Axis cameras and Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 streams; their inclusion is not a guarantee of reliability or an endorsement.
Enable YouTube live streaming and create the stream
- Check eligibility and enablement. Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take time, so complete it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Stream. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use, following YouTube’s encoder-stream workflow.
- Copy the ingest details into your encoder. Use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public document, or share it with people who do not operate the stream. Rotate or replace it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the feed reaches Live Control Room and inspect the picture and sound before taking the broadcast live. If you use scheduled sessions, verify the correct stream and schedule before each start.
Set encoder settings for a stable feed
Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the source and that your sustained upload connection can support. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for different devices and network conditions, but this does not compensate for an unstable encoder-to-YouTube connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport in RTMP workflows, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs listed in its current guidance are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Audio guidance includes AAC or MP3. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations for the complete current settings table.

| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps; choose a rate suited to the source and connection. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3; check YouTube’s settings table for its additional audio recommendations. |
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of flawless delivery. Allow upload headroom beyond the configured stream bitrate, and test the connection under the conditions in which it will operate. YouTube recommends a speed test and asks creators to test representative motion and audio, then monitor the stream-health messages.
Test the full broadcast before launch
- Play representative footage, including fast motion, transitions, and the most demanding source quality in the schedule.
- Listen for silence, clipping, sync drift, or an incorrect audio source; check the feed again after a program change.
- Watch Live Control Room for preview and stream-health warnings rather than assuming that an encoder status of “connected” means viewers receive a clean feed.
- Test the intended handoff from one program to the next, including what happens at the end of a playlist and when a source is unavailable.
- Record who can access the encoder and stream key, and document how an operator can restart the source or replace the key if needed.
Plan stream duration, VOD archives, and watch hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise automatic archiving for a single uninterrupted broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours. If you need replays, divide the linear schedule into separate sessions shorter than 12 hours, end and restart the broadcast at planned points, and check that each resulting VOD is available and watchable. Consider keeping an independent local master as a backup; that is an operational safeguard, not a YouTube requirement.

For the long-form YouTube Partner Program route, the current stated threshold is 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months. Livestream hours do not count toward that threshold if the stream is unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. The alternative Shorts route is 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Reaching a threshold leads to channel review, not automatic admission. Check YouTube’s YPP eligibility overview for current requirements.
Make original value and rights visible
A looping schedule is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube says monetized content should be an original creation and “should not be mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative.” Its reused-content policy applies at the channel level and is distinct from copyright enforcement; even permission from the original creator does not, by itself, establish monetization eligibility. Give programs meaningful original creative, educational, or entertainment value, and make the channel’s authorship clear to viewers and reviewers. YouTube clarified its “inauthentic content” policy on July 15, 2025; read the channel monetization policies. No particular loop or format is guaranteed approval.

Operate and troubleshoot the channel
A 24/7 operation needs someone or something watching for failures. YouTube advises monitoring stream health; the exact monitoring and redundancy plan is up to the operator. Define how you will detect an encoder crash, lost upload, frozen or silent output, source changes, and credential problems, and who can respond. For a critical channel, consider a backup source or a documented restart procedure.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room never receives a preview | Wrong server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or outbound connection blocked | Confirm the selected stream’s ingest details, paste the key carefully, check encoder connection status, and review network access. |
| Repeated buffering or stream-health warnings | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating relative to the configured bitrate | Run an upload speed test, reduce resolution or bitrate, use a more stable connection, and leave headroom above the stream bitrate. |
| Video freezes or audio disappears | Source, capture input, playlist transition, or encoder process has failed | Inspect the source at the failure point, test transitions, verify audio routing, and restart or switch to a known-good source. |
| Broadcast stops unexpectedly | Encoder or computer failure, power loss, internet interruption, or stream credentials changed | Check the encoder and network logs, restore power or connectivity, verify the key, and use the documented restart plan. |
| No replay appears after a long broadcast | The stream may have exceeded the duration for which YouTube documents automatic archiving | Use shorter sessions below 12 hours when archiving matters; verify each VOD after ending a session. |
| Monetization is rejected despite having permission | Copyright clearance does not settle the channel-level reused or inauthentic content review | Review the channel’s originality and added viewer value, then consult YouTube’s monetization policies and decision details. |
