Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOn Windows, OBS can begin streaming automatically when it launches: add --startstreaming to its launch command. That does not, by itself, restore power to the PC, wait for your internet connection, recover every camera or source, or ensure YouTube makes a scheduled event live. Treat those as separate steps and test the whole chain while supervised before relying on it for a children’s stream.
What must recover after an outage
For a broadcast to resume, several things have to work in sequence: the PC must restart when power returns, Windows must launch OBS, the network must be ready, OBS must reconnect to YouTube, any video and audio sources must be available, and YouTube must accept the encoder feed and make the event live. OBS’s launch-time streaming option covers only the application’s start-streaming action. OBS documents Automatic Reconnect separately, so it should not be treated as a complete power-outage recovery system. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
The steps below use Windows and YouTube as the example because that is the documented workflow described here. The OBS launch parameter is the key application setting; exact startup and scheduling details can differ on other operating systems. Windows firmware settings that restore power after an AC outage and exact Task Scheduler configuration are not covered here.
Prepare OBS and your stream before automating it
- Save the setup you actually want to broadcast. Confirm the OBS profile, scene collection, starting scene, video and audio sources, and stream destination. OBS recommends testing settings before relying on them for streaming in its Overview Guide.
- Verify the YouTube connection details. YouTube encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Confirm the intended destination and key in YouTube’s encoder instructions. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Check the sources independently. If the stream uses a camera or another network input, verify that the source returns after a restart or connection interruption. OBS restarting and a source recovering are separate events; automation does not guarantee that every camera or network source reconnects.
- Confirm the YouTube event settings. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then click Go live. Its Auto-start and Auto-stop settings affect whether encoder output can start or stop the event. Check the settings for the specific event rather than assuming OBS’s launch option or a stream key is sufficient. See Manage live stream settings.
Make OBS start streaming when it launches on Windows
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. Add it to the OBS launch command so the application starts streaming when opened. OBS’s official instructions cover both a Windows shortcut and a scheduled task: OBS Launch Parameters.

Option A: Add the parameter to a shortcut
- Create or locate a shortcut to OBS Studio.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties and find the Target field.
- After the executable path, add a space and
--startstreaming. Keep the executable path intact and put the parameter outside its closing quotation mark, if the path is quoted. - Save the change, then launch OBS with that shortcut and verify that it opens the intended profile and begins streaming as expected.
This configures what happens when the shortcut launches OBS. You still need Windows to start OBS after a reboot, and the network and YouTube event must be ready for the connection to succeed.
Option B: Launch OBS with a scheduled task
You can configure a Windows scheduled task to run OBS with --startstreaming. OBS’s launch-parameter guide specifically says to set the task’s Start in field to the folder containing obs64.exe. The exact task trigger, permissions, and timing depend on your Windows setup; the documented launch parameter alone does not configure them.

Make startup resilient to network timing
After power returns, a PC may start before a modem, router, or other network equipment has restored internet access. If OBS tries to connect too early, the initial stream connection may not succeed. One Windows 11 OBS forum user reported reconnect trouble when OBS started before the network equipment was ready; that is an individual report, not proof that every system will behave the same way. OBS forum discussion.
A delayed or network-aware launch may help, but the appropriate configuration depends on the computer and Windows setup. Do not assume that a fixed delay will always be long enough. Test the timing with your own router, PC, sources, and YouTube event, and verify what happens if the first connection attempt fails.

Test the full restart before leaving it unattended
Run a supervised test that checks more than whether OBS opens. YouTube advises checking the preview, stream health, and audio and video quality. YouTube encoder instructions.
- Save your work and arrange a safe, supervised test of the reboot or brief outage scenario.
- Let the PC restart and allow the network equipment time to recover.
- Check that OBS opens the intended scenes and that its preview shows the expected picture and audio sources.
- Check in YouTube Live Control Room that the encoder feed appears and the event is actually live when intended.
- Check stream health, audio, and video from the platform side. A running OBS window is not proof that viewers can see a live broadcast.
Do not leave the setup unattended until you have confirmed the entire recovery path, including the event’s start behavior. A test that only verifies Windows launches OBS does not establish that the camera returned or YouTube resumed the public stream.

Children’s stream rules still apply
Restart automation does not change YouTube’s audience or child-safety requirements. YouTube says some features, including live chat, are disabled or restricted when a stream is set as made for kids. It also says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. Check YouTube’s current guidance, Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming; do not treat a setting or automation step as a workaround.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens after reboot but does not start streaming | The launch command may not include --startstreaming, or the PC may be opening a different shortcut or task. |
Check the shortcut’s Target or the task’s launch arguments, then test by launching OBS through that exact entry point. |
| The task starts OBS but it behaves incorrectly | The scheduled task’s working directory may be missing or incorrect. | Set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies in its launch-parameter instructions. |
| OBS is open, but YouTube does not show an encoder preview | Network readiness, server URL, stream key, or the initial connection may be at fault. | Check internet access, confirm the YouTube encoder details, and test whether OBS starts before the router is ready. |
| The YouTube preview appears but the scheduled event is not live | The event’s start controls may require a separate action. | Check the event’s Auto-start setting and follow YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions; for a scheduled event, its encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live. |
| The event is live but the picture or audio is missing | A source may not have recovered, even though OBS and the stream connection did. | Inspect the OBS preview and each relevant camera, audio device, or network source after restart. |
| OBS or YouTube appears to reconnect inconsistently | Application startup, reconnect behavior, network availability, sources, and platform event state are separate parts of the chain. | Test each stage under supervision. Do not infer successful recovery from the OBS window alone. |
Or let it run in the cloud
