If Restream says your YouTube stream key is invalid, first identify how you connected YouTube. For an integrated YouTube channel, Restream’s published fix is to remove the channel from Restream, reset the key in YouTube Studio, then add the channel again. If you configured the destination as Custom RTMP, check the event-specific stream URL and key instead. These are different setups, so the right fix depends on which one you use.
Start by identifying your YouTube connection
Restream supports two relevant routes to YouTube. An integrated channel is connected by authorizing the YouTube channel in Restream. Custom RTMP is a manually configured destination for a particular YouTube event, using that event’s stream URL and key. Resetting a key or reconnecting an integrated channel does not replace checking the correct event details in a Custom RTMP setup.
- Integrated YouTube channel: You selected YouTube through Restream’s channel integration. Follow the remove, reset, and re-add sequence below.
- Custom RTMP: You pasted a YouTube event’s URL and key into Restream’s Custom RTMP fields. Verify that both values belong to the event you intend to stream to.
Fix an invalid key for an integrated YouTube channel
- In Restream, open Channels and remove the YouTube channel. This is part of Restream’s recovery sequence; changing a key alone may not complete the reconnection.
- In YouTube Studio, open Stream settings and reset the stream key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset it. An editor or viewer does not have permission, so ask an owner or manager to do this if the reset control is unavailable.
- Return to Restream and choose Add Channels, then YouTube. Re-add the channel and complete the authorization flow.
- Try going live again. If the integrated connection still fails, use the direct-stream test below to determine whether the issue is on YouTube’s side or specific to the Restream setup.
A stream key is a credential that directs an encoder’s feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat a reset key as a replacement: if your workflow or encoder uses the key directly, update it there too.
If you use Custom RTMP, verify the event details
- Open the intended YouTube event in YouTube’s Live Dashboard. Copy that event’s stream URL and stream key.
- In Restream, open the Custom RTMP channel settings. Paste the YouTube stream URL into the URL field and the key into the key field. Make sure the two values have not been swapped and both came from the same event.
- Save and try the stream again. If the event’s key was reset, update the Custom RTMP details with the new event credentials.
Restream documents Custom RTMP as a paid-plan feature. Custom channels do not support API-dependent Restream features such as Chat and Analytics. Those limitations concern the Custom RTMP route; an integrated YouTube channel is managed by re-adding it through Add Channels.

Check whether the YouTube event can be streamed through Restream
Restream says events created through the YouTube mobile app are locked to mobile streaming and are not supported through Restream. If that is the event you selected, use a YouTube event and workflow that Restream supports rather than repeatedly resetting the key.
Test YouTube without Restream
Try starting a test stream directly on YouTube, without sending the feed through Restream. If YouTube rejects or cannot start that stream too, Restream recommends contacting YouTube support. If direct streaming works, focus on the Restream connection type, its authorization, or the event-specific Custom RTMP details.

If YouTube accepts the key but the stream still fails
These checks are for a stream that gets past key rejection but has another startup or delivery problem. YouTube recommends using the latest version of your encoder and checking the preview for picture and sound. Review encoder errors and CPU load; if the encoder output looks healthy, test your outbound internet connection.
- No picture or sound in the encoder preview: Check the encoder’s selected video and audio sources before changing the YouTube key again.
- Encoder errors or high CPU load: Review the encoder’s error messages and workload, and update it to the latest version.
- Encoder output looks healthy but YouTube does not receive it: Check the outbound connection from the streaming computer.
