To stream a video file from a Mac to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a live event in YouTube Studio, choose settings that fit the file and your upload connection, then have FFmpeg send the video to YouTube’s ingest endpoint at live speed. Use a private placeholder for the stream key, check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status, and test before the actual event.
What you need before starting
- A video file stored on the Mac and an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and network protocol you plan to use. Available encoders and protocols depend on the build; the sources here do not establish a current macOS installation command.
- Access to YouTube Live Control Room to create or schedule a live event and retrieve its ingest endpoint and stream key. Account eligibility and any account-specific restrictions should be checked in YouTube Studio.
- A dependable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, plus room for audio and network variation.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Use the endpoint and protocol shown for your event in Studio, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports them. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the authority for current ingest requirements.
Choose the output settings
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Match the output to the source where practical, but choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended; these are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth delivery. Check YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific table rather than assuming the same bitrate applies to every format. YouTube also advises checking your upload bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
Keyframes and audio
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, the listed recommendations are 48 kHz and 384 kbps. The SDR color-space recommendation is Rec. 709 at 8-bit. These settings need to match the output you actually send; a source’s existing properties may differ.

Streamcopy or re-encoding?
Streamcopy sends the existing encoded audio and video without decoding and re-encoding. It is fast and avoids re-encoding quality loss, but only works if the streams, timestamps, frame rate and output muxer are acceptable to the destination. It cannot resize, filter or otherwise transform media. Re-encoding is the more adaptable option when you need compatible codecs, a different resolution, filters or controlled bitrate, but it uses processing resources and can affect image quality.
FFmpeg’s official documentation explains both approaches and notes that command-line options are order-sensitive: most options apply to the next input or output. Put input options before the relevant input and output encoding options before the output URL. FFmpeg documentation
Prepare the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the ingest endpoint and stream key shown for that event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or paste it into a shared log or public script.
- Keep the event open in Studio so you can check its preview and stream health after FFmpeg connects.
Do not rely on an endpoint copied from an unofficial example. The event’s Studio settings determine the endpoint and key to use.

Inspect the file and select a method
Before choosing streamcopy or encoding, identify the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio tracks. FFmpeg can inspect media with its input-reading tools; if a file contains multiple audio or video tracks, you may need to select the intended streams explicitly. A source file is not guaranteed to be accepted unchanged just because it plays locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTemplate: encode to H.264 and AAC
This template reads the file at approximately real-time pace, encodes video with libx264 and stereo audio with AAC, and sends an FLV-muxed output to an RTMPS URL. Replace INPUT_FILE, RTMPS_ENDPOINT and STREAM_KEY with your own values. Use the bitrate and frame-rate values appropriate to your source, target resolution and reliable upload capacity. The example assumes a 30 fps output and a two-second GOP; adjust -g 60 if your chosen output frame rate differs.
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT_FILE" -c:v libx264 -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "RTMPS_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY"
The 8 Mbps values above are illustrative command parameters, not a universal recommendation. Choose a rate suitable for your output and connection; YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 guidance, for example, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. If FFmpeg reports that libx264 is unavailable, the installed build may not include that encoder. The command may also need changes for the source’s codecs, audio layout, frame rate, endpoint format or FFmpeg build.

Template: streamcopy compatible media
Use streamcopy only after confirming the source’s streams and container path are compatible with the selected YouTube ingest output. This version does not alter the source streams:
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT_FILE" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY"
If streamcopy fails, or YouTube does not receive usable audio or video, re-encode the incompatible stream or select the intended tracks explicitly. Do not assume that changing the filename or container alone converts an unsupported codec.
Start the stream and verify it
- Run the command in Terminal. Keep the key private; avoid saving a real key in a shared script, shell history or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Wait for YouTube Studio to show an incoming signal and preview. Check moving video and audible audio, not just a connected status.
- When the preview is correct, start the live event in YouTube Studio if the event has not been configured to start automatically.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. If the connection or encoding is unstable, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again.
- When the event is over, stop FFmpeg cleanly and confirm the event’s ending behavior in Studio.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the intended program, then watch stream health during the event. YouTube live encoder settings

Troubleshooting
YouTube does not detect an incoming stream
- Check that the endpoint and key belong to the event currently open in Studio, and that neither contains accidental spaces or missing characters.
- Confirm the protocol and endpoint format match what Studio provides and that the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol.
- Check that the network can reach the ingest service and that FFmpeg is still running rather than exiting with an error.
The command reports an unknown encoder or protocol
The installed FFmpeg build may not include the requested encoder or RTMPS support. Use a build that includes the needed components, or adjust the command to an available supported option. The documentation cited here does not verify a particular current macOS installation method.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong
Inspect the source’s audio streams and select the intended track if there are several. Confirm its codec is supported by the output path; if not, encode it as AAC or another format supported by YouTube. Check the Studio preview with sound before starting the event.
FFmpeg rejects streamcopy or YouTube shows a bad signal
The source codec, timestamps, frame rate or stream layout may not work with the selected muxer and destination. Switch to re-encoding for the incompatible stream, ensure the keyframe interval is within YouTube’s guidance, and test the new output in Studio.

The stream buffers or loses health
The configured bitrate may exceed the connection’s stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Lower the bitrate or output resolution and retest. A recommended bitrate is not a promise that a particular home connection can sustain it.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a file locally does not establish that you have rights to broadcast its video, music, narration or other included material. Confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission for the live use, and review YouTube’s policies and any restrictions shown in Studio before going live. A successful technical preview does not establish that the content is cleared or that it will remain available without a claim or interruption.
