A 24/7 YouTube live stream uses roughly 14.4 GB per day, or 432 GB in a 30-day month, using YouTube’s rough estimate of about 10 MB per minute. These are planning figures, not guaranteed measurements: actual use varies with playback quality. If you are broadcasting rather than watching, your upload use depends on the encoder bitrate instead.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube live stream use?
YouTube Help gives a rough rule of thumb of about 10 MB of data per minute for a live stream, in the context of mobile live streaming. Multiplying that estimate across a full day gives:

The figures use decimal units and straight-line multiplication. YouTube’s estimate is a rough heuristic, not a measurement of every live stream or device. YouTube’s live-stream filming tips provide the 10 MB-per-minute rule of thumb.
Will watching YouTube Live all day use my broadband data?
Yes. When you watch, your home connection downloads the video. The amount depends in part on the quality YouTube delivers or the quality you select. YouTube says playback quality can adjust based on factors such as connection speed, player or screen size, source quality and browser; viewers can also choose a quality on supported platforms. So 432 GB is a useful rough monthly planning estimate, not a fixed allowance for every viewer. See YouTube’s explanation of playback quality.

Other household internet use adds to the same broadband plan’s total. If several people stream, download files or use video calls, include that activity when assessing whether a plan’s allowance is sufficient.
How many GB does broadcasting a 24-hour live stream use?
Broadcasting is different from watching: the creator’s device uploads an encoded feed, while a viewer downloads playback. The encoder bitrate table describes the incoming broadcast feed, not the amount every viewer receives. For example, YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings list 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. Those examples are not universal viewer data rates. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

For a known, sustained bitrate, a simple decimal-unit estimate is about 10.8 GB per day for every 1 Mbps. That is calculated from bitrate × time, converted from bits to bytes; it is not an official YouTube playback figure. At 5 Mbps, the outgoing feed would transfer about 54 GB in a day, or 1,620 GB over 30 days, before overhead or other traffic. Use this calculation only when you know the relevant sustained bitrate.
How to check whether your Indian broadband plan can handle it
- Identify the type of use. For viewing, use the 14.4 GB-per-day and 432 GB-per-30-day figures as rough starting estimates. For broadcasting, estimate from your actual encoder bitrate instead.
- Check your exact plan’s terms. Look at the current bill, provider app or provider website for the billing cycle, included data or fair-use threshold, and what happens after the threshold. “Unlimited” does not by itself establish that all plans have the same terms.
- Compare all household traffic with the plan limit. A continuous stream at the rough viewing estimate would account for a sizeable portion of a 3,300 GB allowance, if that threshold applies to your plan. Leave room for other users and devices.
- For a broadcast, check upload capacity as well as data allowance. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. A data allowance and a stable upload connection are separate requirements. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Why there is no single Indian broadband data cap

Jio’s prepaid terms also state a 3,300 GB threshold for applicable unlimited plans in a 30-day recharge cycle. Check the terms that apply to your own plan: JioFiber postpaid terms and JioFiber prepaid terms.
- A Chennai BSNL Bharat Fibre tariff document lists a 3,300 GB FUP example and a reduced speed after the threshold. It is a local tariff document, not evidence of the current offer for every BSNL subscriber: BSNL Chennai tariff PDF.
Provider thresholds and consequences can change, so confirm the current terms for your locality and plan before relying on an example.
