You can loop a local Fortnite replay file on YouTube Live with FFmpeg by pacing playback in real time, repeating the input indefinitely, and sending the output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with your stream key. The exact command depends on the codecs in your replay and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build, so test the file and settings in YouTube Studio before making the stream public.
Before you start
- A local replay video file that your installed FFmpeg can read. This workflow starts with an exported or otherwise available file; it does not cover extracting a replay from a particular Fortnite version.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- An FFmpeg build with the required input, output format, and video/audio encoders.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the full outgoing bitrate, plus headroom.
Check rights before rebroadcasting. Access to a replay does not by itself establish permission to stream its tournament footage, game content, soundtrack, or overlays continuously in public. Confirm the permissions that apply to your file and its audio.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- Create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and key into your FFmpeg output destination as described below. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Follow its current encoder settings guidance for the selected codec and profile.
Prepare a looped, real-time FFmpeg command
FFmpeg’s command line uses options in relation to their input or output: put input options before the relevant -i, and output options before the destination. For a file intended to play at its normal rate and repeat, the command shape needs real-time input pacing, an indefinite input loop, and an FLV output sent to YouTube’s RTMPS address with the stream key.

Do not paste a guessed command unchanged. No tested command is established here for a specific replay, FFmpeg build, operating system, or codec combination. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and documentation matching your installed version, then check the relevant format and muxer documentation. Confirm that loop and pacing options are placed as input options for your build, and that the selected output muxer and encoders are available.
Use your YouTube server URL and key in the RTMPS destination in the format required by the server, with the key kept out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs. Before starting, inspect the actual replay’s video and audio codecs and properties; whether it can be passed through or needs transcoding cannot be determined without that inspection.

Choose settings that match the replay and connection
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation for encoder streaming. |
| Video codec | YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose an encoder supported by your build and compatible with the intended ingest profile. |
| Audio codec | YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Verify that the file has usable audio and select an available encoder if transcoding. |
| Bitrate mode | Use constant bitrate as YouTube recommends for encoder settings. Ensure the whole outgoing bitrate fits your upload capacity. |
| Keyframes | YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | YouTube supports rates up to 60 fps. Match the source and the profile rather than forcing a higher rate without a reason. |
| Example H.264 rates | YouTube’s current table recommends 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific H.264 profiles, not universal bitrates for every resolution, frame rate, or codec. |
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, the connection needs capacity beyond the stream’s total outgoing bitrate for stability; account for other devices and traffic sharing the connection. Lower the profile or bitrate if the available upload path cannot sustain it.
The replay may already match your target settings, or it may need transcoding. The right choice depends on the file’s codecs and the selected stream profile, so validate the actual input rather than assuming stream copy will work.

Test in Live Control Room before going public
- Start FFmpeg with the stream set to private or otherwise not publicly announced, and wait for Live Control Room to receive the encoder feed.
- Check the correct preview for picture, audio, motion, and stream health. Watch a representative section with fast gameplay as well as quieter footage.
- Verify that the file repeats cleanly at the end: look and listen for a black frame, audio gap, abrupt transition, or an unwanted pause.
- Monitor the stream and upload connection during the test. YouTube advises continuous monitoring and upload headroom; do not assume that a successful initial connection guarantees a stable long session.
- Only then set the intended visibility and start the public broadcast in Live Control Room.
Choose DVR and plan how to stop the stream
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. Its help page cautions that rewind capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Separately, YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archiving behavior for longer broadcasts. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and its encoder setup page.
When ending the broadcast, stop the encoder deliberately and verify the stream’s state in Live Control Room. If you want an automatically archived stream, keep the encoder stream under 12 hours according to YouTube’s stated threshold.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the replay | Bad path, unsupported container, damaged file, or a build lacking a needed demuxer/decoder. | Check the file path and permissions, inspect the media properties, and confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the file. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL or key, stream not enabled, or an unavailable output format/encoder. | Recheck the RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm live streaming is enabled, and verify the FFmpeg build’s available formats and encoders. Reset an exposed key. |
| Video or audio is missing | Unexpected source streams, unsupported codecs, or incorrect stream selection/transcoding. | Inspect the input’s streams and verify the output includes the intended video and audio. Test a short private stream before going public. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable health | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the chosen bitrate is too high. | Compare the total output bitrate with sustained upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. |
| Loop has a gap or abrupt change | The source file’s final frames/audio or the loop behavior creates a visible or audible discontinuity. | Preview the transition at the end and beginning of the file; edit or replace the source if the discontinuity is in the media. |
| Viewers cannot rewind or the stream is not archived as expected | The broadcast exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour guidance threshold for DVR rewind or automatic archiving. | Check the stream duration and distinguish DVR behavior from the under-12-hour automatic archive statement. |
Local runtime, storage, and an always-on alternative
With FFmpeg, the computer running the process and its network connection must remain available for the broadcast. The replay file also occupies local storage; an external drive is optional if your existing storage is insufficient. Keep any local archive you need, and check that recordings are intact and growing as expected.
Or let it run in the cloud
