Set up a small set of purpose-named OBS scenes, assign a distinct hotkey to each, choose Cut or Fade transitions, and rehearse the full sequence before going live. For a quiet ASMR broadcast, verify both the picture and the audio in a test recording or stream. OBS provides the scene controls; it does not guarantee that a computer, network, or broadcast will run uninterrupted all night.
Plan the scenes around the broadcast
An OBS scene is a layout built from sources such as a camera, image, text, or media file. Start with the visual states your stream actually needs rather than building a long list you will not use. For example, an ASMR broadcast might use an opening slate, a main close-up or tabletop view, an alternate view, a brief break screen, and an ending slate. These are examples, not required OBS presets.
Create and name scenes in the Scenes dock so each purpose is easy to recognize at a glance. Add the intended sources to each scene, then check their order: sources higher in the list can appear over those below. Toggle visibility to confirm that overlays do not obscure the main image and that the expected camera or media is visible. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and Sources Guide.
Assign native OBS hotkeys
- Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
- Find the “Switch to a specific Scene” action for each scene and assign a distinct key or key combination.
- Choose controls that are easy to remember and unlikely to be pressed accidentally during the broadcast.
- Apply the settings, then rehearse every intended switch while watching the preview.
Hotkeys provide direct scene switching without a plugin or dedicated control hardware. If you want tactile buttons, Elgato Stream Deck is an optional hardware example supported by some OBS plugins; it is not required for basic switching. Check current model and plugin compatibility before choosing hardware. OBS discusses plugin and hardware integrations in its Plugins Guide.

Choose how scene changes should look
- Cut: changes immediately, useful when the new shot should appear at once.
- Fade: softens the change and may better suit a calm visual rhythm.
OBS includes Cut and Fade by default, and lets you adjust transition duration. To prepare a change without showing the in-progress scene to viewers, enable Studio Mode. Prepare the next scene in the edit area, then press Transition when you are ready for it to become live. A transition is an aesthetic choice, not a requirement; use one that fits the stream rather than adding motion for its own sake. Details are in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Check microphone and media playback
Confirm the microphone
Choose the intended microphone in OBS audio settings and watch its Audio Mixer meter while speaking or making a test sound. Meter movement confirms that OBS is receiving a signal, but it does not establish that the sound is clean or at a suitable level. Make a short recording or private test and listen back. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking selected devices and testing before a first broadcast.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
There is no universal microphone, gain setting, filter, or recording format required for ASMR: the right setup depends on the equipment, room, and sounds you intend to capture. Test processing cautiously, because filters can change subtle sounds.
Check media sources
If a scene uses prerecorded audio through a Media Source, inspect whether Loop is enabled and review the options for restarting playback when the source becomes active or closing a file while it is inactive. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats. Confirm the intended behavior by switching away and back during rehearsal. See OBS Media Sources.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Choose manual or conditional switching
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Scene hotkeys | You are present and can press a control. | Built in and simple, but requires operator action. |
| Studio Mode plus hotkeys | You want to prepare and preview a change before it reaches viewers. | Adds an explicit Transition action. |
| Advanced Scene Switcher | A scene should change in response to configured conditions or macros. | Adds a plugin dependency; compatibility must be checked. |
| Stream Deck with compatible plugin support | You want dedicated tactile controls or hands-busy operation. | Optional hardware and compatibility considerations; unnecessary for basic switching. |
For conditional automation, the OBS forum listing for Advanced Scene Switcher reports version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1. These are listing details, not a promise that every current OBS installation or platform is compatible. Check the listing against your installed version, and back up your OBS settings before relying on a plugin during a long broadcast.
Test the complete sequence before going live
- Switch through every scene and confirm the intended camera, overlay, and media source appear without blank or covered areas.
- Try each transition and hotkey, including the path back to the main scene.
- Check the microphone meter, then record or run a private test and listen to the result.
- Verify that media playback loops or restarts as intended when you change scenes.
- Run a longer private or unlisted rehearsal under the conditions you expect during the broadcast, and arrange a way to monitor the stream.
OBS recommends a short test before a first stream or recording: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” A few minutes can reveal setup problems, but it cannot establish overnight reliability. No cited OBS guidance promises uninterrupted operation for a particular computer, plugin combination, or streaming platform.

Troubleshoot common switching problems
- The wrong scene appears: check the hotkey assignment in Settings → Hotkeys, then rehearse the intended key. If you use Studio Mode, remember to press Transition to make the prepared scene live.
- An image or overlay covers the focal view: inspect source order in the scene and toggle visibility to locate the covering source.
- The microphone meter does not respond: check that OBS has the intended microphone selected and that the device is available; make another test recording after correcting it.
- There is no sound in the recording: listen to a short test, verify the selected audio device, and inspect the relevant audio source or mixer behavior instead of relying on meter movement alone.
- A media source does not repeat or resume as expected: review Loop and the source options for restarting playback when active or closing a file while inactive, then test by switching away and back.
- A conditional-switching plugin does not work: compare its current compatibility requirements with your OBS version and platform. If compatibility is uncertain, return to native hotkeys rather than depending on unverified automation.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS gives you control over scenes on your computer. If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube. It does not replace OBS scene switching for a live camera-based ASMR session.
StreamNeo keeps the stream running with your computer off, supports uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
