In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check for the incoming preview and stream health, then select Go live once the preview appears.
Find which stage is failing
There are four separate stages to check: OBS produces and sends the output; YouTube ingests it; Live Control Room shows a preview and health status; and you start the broadcast. OBS can report that it is streaming while the feed is not reaching YouTube—or while the broadcast is still waiting to be started.
- OBS output: Is the encoder producing and sending the expected audio and video?
- YouTube ingestion: Does the selected event show a preview, and what does Stream health report?
- Broadcast state: Has Go live been selected in YouTube Studio?
- Network path: Is the computer’s outbound upload connection stable and fast enough for the stream?
Diagnose the stream in order

Open the correct event in Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or current stream you intend OBS to feed. Confirm that you have not selected a different event. Look for the incoming preview, Stream health, and any timestamped error messages. YouTube says Live Control Room displays health information and specific error messages: YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guide.

Match OBS’s server URL and stream key to that event
Compare the server URL and stream key configured in OBS with the settings for the selected YouTube stream. A stream key identifies the feed YouTube should accept; a key for another event, an outdated key, or a typo can prevent the intended event from receiving the feed. If you suspect the key is wrong or stale, copy the current key—or reset it—in Live Control Room, then update OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.

Check OBS’s own output and errors
Confirm that OBS is outputting the intended audio and video and that its encoder is not reporting an error. Check OBS’s dashboard or log for connection or encoding problems, review CPU load, and make sure the encoder software is current. YouTube recommends checking output in the encoder and reviewing its errors and resource use: YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guide.

Follow the specific Stream health message
Use the message shown for this stream rather than assuming every offline state has the same cause. For example, YouTube’s documented “incorrect stream format” error can occur when the encoder sends a format other than H.264 video and AAC audio. That format guidance applies when the matching error appears; it is not a universal explanation for a missing preview. See YouTube’s error and troubleshooting guidance.

Test outbound upload if OBS looks healthy
A healthy-looking encoder with a missing or problematic received feed can point to the outbound network connection. Test upload capacity, not just download speed, and compare available upload bandwidth with OBS’s stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare bandwidth above the stream’s needs. Its troubleshooting guide and stream health guidance describe connection checks and headroom.

Start the broadcast after YouTube shows the preview
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to wait for the Live Control Room preview and then click Go live. Sending a feed from OBS and starting the public broadcast are distinct actions. If the preview has arrived but the event remains offline, check whether the broadcast still needs to be started. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
Use the symptoms to narrow the cause
| What you see | What to check next |

| OBS says “Streaming,” but the intended event has no preview | Confirm the selected event, server URL, and stream key. Then check OBS’s output and the outbound upload connection. |
| Live Control Room shows a specific health error | Use that message to guide the fix. Apply the H.264 video and AAC audio check when YouTube reports the documented incorrect-format error. |
| A preview appears, but the channel still shows offline | Check whether you have clicked Go live in Live Control Room. |
| OBS appears healthy, but the feed is missing or unstable | Test outbound upload reliability and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
If the stream is still offline
The cause cannot be identified from the offline status alone. The most useful evidence is the OBS log, the event selected in YouTube Studio, the current Stream health message, whether the stream key matches, and the condition of the outbound upload connection. If YouTube’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, use its option to report the issue; if the problem involves an encoder sign-in integration, the encoder vendor may need to help.
