There is no single reliable all-in rupee total: the cost depends on the VPS region, stream bitrate, any billable data overage, GST treatment and the provider’s billing setup. A useful official benchmark is Amazon Lightsail’s $7/month Linux plan, but its 2 TB general transfer allowance is halved to 1 TB in Mumbai. At YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30, video payload alone is about 3.24 TB over 30 days—before audio and transport overhead. So the base VPS price is not the full cost of keeping a 24/7 stream running.
How to estimate the monthly cost
Use this formula rather than treating the advertised server price as the total:
Monthly cost = VPS base price + billable outbound transfer overage + applicable GST.
To estimate video payload for a constant bitrate, multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 GB per day per Mbps, then by the number of days. This is a calculation from the bitrate, not a provider measurement. At 10 Mbps for 30 days, the result is 3,240 GB, or about 3.24 decimal TB. Audio and transport overhead add to that amount. The calculation assumes the stream runs continuously at the stated video bitrate.

What a Mumbai VPS plan includes—and what it may leave you paying for
Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux/Unix bundle table lists the following monthly plans. The listed transfer figures are general allowances; Lightsail says Mumbai and certain other regions receive half the listed allowance. Incoming and outgoing transfer both count toward the allowance, while only outbound traffic above the allowance is billed. The cited pricing page does not establish a Mumbai-specific overage rate, so the final bill cannot be calculated from these figures alone.

The $7 plan is a base-price example, not an all-in 1080p30 streaming price: its Mumbai allowance is 1 TB, compared with approximately 3.24 TB of video payload at the recommended 10 Mbps over 30 days. The $12 plan’s Mumbai allowance is 1.5 TB, and the $24 plan’s is 2 TB; both are still below that video-only estimate. Overages could change the total, but do not assume a specific rate without checking the applicable provider pricing and region.
These are published plan specifications, not evidence that a given instance will reliably handle your encoder workload. Looping an already encoded video file uses a different CPU workload from decoding and re-encoding a live feed. Confirm that your instance can send the stream at the needed bitrate, and check the provider’s current regional pricing and transfer terms before purchase.

How GST changes the bill
GST collection depends on the provider’s terms and account details. AWS says it applies GST to cloud services sold to customers in India: customers outside Delhi are charged 18% IGST, while customers in Delhi are charged 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. AWS’s tax page was last updated in March 2026.
DigitalOcean states an 18% GST rate for customers with an India tax location. Its page says that a business adding a valid GSTIN is not charged GST on the invoice but remains responsible under the reverse charge mechanism; the page was marked last verified 22 June 2026. This is provider billing information, not personal tax advice. Confirm the treatment shown on your own account and invoice.

Can a cheap VPS run a 24/7 YouTube stream?
It can be used as a self-managed encoder or sender, but the lowest compute price does not establish that a setup will work continuously. A process that loops an already encoded file is not the same workload as re-encoding video, and transfer quota may cost more than the server itself. You must also arrange process supervision, recovery after a server or network interruption, and checks on YouTube stream health.

YouTube advises creators to test the setup and monitor stream health. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate,” and, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The National Informatics Centre’s webcast checklist mentions 2–4 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth for its described webcast scenario; that figure is not YouTube’s bitrate recommendation.

- Choose the server region. Read the allowance for that region, not only the general plan table. For Mumbai Lightsail bundles, apply the stated half-allowance rule.
- Set the intended stream bitrate and schedule. Multiply Mbps by 10.8 GB per day per Mbps and then by streaming days. Add room for audio and transport overhead; the result is payload arithmetic, not a guaranteed transfer-meter total.
- Compare expected traffic with the quota. Check whether the provider counts inbound and outbound transfer, when overage begins, and the applicable outbound overage rate. Do not use a rate from a different region or plan.
- Check the invoice and tax details. Confirm billing currency, your tax location, whether GST will be collected, and any GSTIN or reverse-charge treatment relevant to your account.
- Test the actual stream before relying on it. Verify the instance can sustain the chosen encoder output and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Plan how the sending process will restart after interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, or start your free first day.
