For a fair comparison, measure the desktop’s actual wall-power draw and use your applicable electricity tariff; for cloud, add the chosen server’s runtime, region, operating system and outbound transfer. First decide whether the channel is a live newsroom feed or a playlist of prerecorded news segments: many managed looping services handle uploaded video, not live camera input.
First decide what “news channel” means
A scheduled channel built from uploaded reports, explainers and other prerecorded segments can use a looping or playlist service. A newsroom transmitting live cameras, presenters or a live production mix needs a live-input workflow; do not assume that a prerecorded-video service can replace it.

Use the computer’s average power draw at the wall while it is doing the actual streaming job—not the power supply’s rated capacity. Include the rest of the equipment that must remain on if you want a whole-setup estimate.

Monthly electricity cost = average watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— runtime hours Ă— marginal electricity rate per kWh.
For continuous operation over 30 days, runtime is 720 hours. As an illustration, an India-focused 2026 cost guide assumes 120–200 W and ₹7–₹8 per kWh, producing an estimate of about ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days. These are illustrative inputs from iTechGuides, not a measurement of a typical desktop or a universal Indian tariff (iTechGuides’ 24/7 streaming cost guide).

For your own figure, measure the complete running setup with a plug-in power meter over a representative period, then use the marginal rate on your electricity bill. Tariffs vary by location, provider and household circumstances; a national default would not reliably predict your bill.
What a self-managed cloud server costs
A cloud virtual machine (VM) is not automatically a fixed-price “streaming service.” Its bill depends on the instance type, region, operating system and time it runs, plus outbound data transfer and any storage, monitoring or backup services you choose. The instance must also be powerful enough to encode the chosen video continuously if it is doing the encoding.

- Compute: price the VM for continuous runtime in the region and operating system you plan to use.
- Outbound transfer: estimate the stream’s bitrate and hours, then check the provider’s regional transfer rates and any applicable allowance or exclusions.
- Additional services: include storage and any monitoring, backup or other paid services actually in your design.
AWS lists compute and internet data transfer as separate billing dimensions. Its current EC2 pricing page says that 100 GB of monthly internet transfer out is free, aggregated across AWS services and regions, subject to exclusions and offer terms. Check the current conditions rather than assuming every workload qualifies (AWS EC2 pricing).
Do not use an AWS viewer-delivery estimate as the price of an EC2 VM sending an encoder feed to YouTube. Those are different architectures. AWS’s example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with roughly 1,000 viewers at SD-540p—about $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution—is a Live Streaming solution example for US East (N. Virginia), not an India EC2 encoder rental or a monthly always-on quote (AWS Live Streaming solution example).

Bitrate affects capacity and cloud transfer
Bitrate is a key input both to your internet upload requirement and to cloud outbound-transfer estimates. It varies with resolution, frame rate and codec, so use the setting you actually intend to stream rather than a generic number.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps using H.264. These are recommendations for encoder ingestion, not a universal setting for every news workflow; the guidance also lists other resolutions and frame rates (YouTube encoder settings). YouTube transcodes live video into other formats for viewers, so encoder input settings do not mean every viewer receives that same format or bitrate.

For a 24/7 stream, the data volume adds up: multiply the selected bitrate by the time streamed to estimate the encoder’s outbound traffic, then check the cloud provider’s billing method and allowance. YouTube recommends keeping upload headroom: its streaming tips say to leave 20% and warn that shared networks or connection disruptions can affect the stream. Test the encoder and check the stream in Live Control Room before relying on a continuous broadcast (YouTube streaming tips).

Compare the same workflow, output resolution, frame rate and bitrate, destination, storage, recovery features, support and tax assumptions. In particular, distinguish a server that encodes or relays a feed to YouTube from a service that also distributes video directly to viewers.
