Switchboard is cloud-based, but it still needs an incoming video feed from an encoder. If that encoder stops when the computer powers off, Switchboard cannot keep relaying that feed.
Why Switchboard Live needs an encoder
Switchboard Live is a cloud-based application, so you do not need to install the Switchboard application on your computer. But its cloud service does not create the live video signal itself: an encoder must send video into the Switchboard workflow. Switchboard lists OBS, Switcher Studio, Ecamm Live, vMix and LiveU as examples of encoders.
Switchboard’s workflow waits for incoming video from the encoder. Its Go Live control remains inactive until video is detected. For a YouTube stream, the documented sequence is to send video from the encoder into the workflow, check that video appears in the confidence monitor and the receiving indicator is green, then select YouTube and press Go Live.
What happens when you shut down the computer
If the encoder is software running on the computer being shut down, that computer stops supplying its video feed. Switchboard being available in the cloud does not keep that encoder running or replace the missing source. So if OBS, or another encoder on that computer, is sending the video, expect the feed to stop when the computer powers off.

A different arrangement may work: the encoder could run on a separate device or service that stays powered and connected. Switchboard documents software, hardware, mobile and cloud-based encoder categories, but the category alone does not guarantee that a particular setup will continue after your computer shuts down. The encoder must still have a usable video input and be configured to send to your Switchboard workflow and YouTube destination.
Check your setup before shutting down
- Identify the device or service that is encoding and sending video to Switchboard.
- Check whether that encoder runs on the computer you plan to turn off. If it does, shutting down that computer also stops its contribution to the feed.
- If you use a separate encoder, verify that it has the required video input and will remain powered and connected to the network.
- Confirm the separate encoder is configured for your Switchboard workflow and YouTube destination.
- Before going live, check for video in Switchboard’s confidence monitor and confirm the receiving indicator is green. Then select the YouTube destination and press Go Live.
