As one concrete reference, Google Cloud lists a T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour—$255.50 for 730 hours for the GPU component alone, before the VM and other charges. Compare the complete bills for the same video, encoding settings, and reliability needs.
Compare the same workload, not a GPU price against a PC’s electricity bill
A fair comparison starts with what the channel actually needs to send to YouTube: its resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the chosen computer or cloud machine can encode that content. A quiet, mostly static relaxation video may place different demands on an encoder than motion-heavy footage; test the real scene instead of assuming a GPU is necessary.
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and advises testing the connection with the planned content. It transcodes an incoming live stream into viewing formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not mean every source configuration has the same cost or workload. What a cloud instance can cost over a month
Cloud compute is billed according to the selected provider, region, operating system, machine configuration, and usage. A machine left running for an always-on stream continues accruing runtime charges even while idle. Google Cloud says a running but idle VM is billed for uptime; its resource billing has a one-minute minimum, then one-second increments. See Google Cloud VM pricing.

Google Cloud’s T4 figure is only one component
Google Cloud lists a T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour on its pricing page, accessed in 2026. Multiplying that listed rate by 730 hours gives $255.50 for the GPU component alone. Google says GPU charges are added to VM cost and that the GPU price excludes the VM instance, disk, and networking. This is not an all-in quote; region and availability affect pricing. Use Google’s calculator for a matching configuration, and account for disks, networking, licensing, taxes, and any discounts that actually apply. AWS and other configurations need their own totals
AWS On-Demand pricing depends on instance, operating system, and region. AWS bills usage from launch until the instance is stopped or terminated; per-second billing applies to specified operating systems after the first unit of use. The instance rate may not include EBS storage, public IPv4, or data transfer. Check the matching configuration and associated charges on AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.

How to calculate the PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use measured average wall draw while running the actual encoding workload, not a power-supply rating or a guess. For a simple 30.4-day month, use 730 hours:

For example, a hypothetical PC averaging 50 W at the wall would use 36.5 kWh over 730 hours: 50 Ă· 1,000 Ă— 730 = 36.5. Multiply 36.5 by the rate on your electricity bill to estimate energy cost. The 50 W figure is an illustrative input, not a measured PC result or typical consumption claim.
Include costs beyond electricity when they are incremental
- Already-owned PC: for a short-run marginal comparison, the original purchase may be a sunk cost. Still include added electricity, maintenance, or replacement costs if running it continuously brings those forward.
- New or replacement PC: spread the purchase cost over a reasonable useful life for a full comparison, rather than comparing its entire purchase price with one month of cloud use.
- Connectivity and continuity: include genuinely additional internet service, backup power, storage, monitoring, or labor. Do not count an existing household bill as an incremental expense unless the stream changes it.
YouTube’s computer-based streaming guidance says expensive equipment is not required to start, but that does not certify a particular PC for a specific encoding workload. A plug-in power meter can help establish wall draw; check the meter’s suitability and accuracy before relying on its readings.

Reliability and network costs change the comparison
YouTube recommends maintaining 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the chosen stream bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a stream. At 14 Mbps, for example, the 20% headroom guidance implies planning for at least 16.8 Mbps of reliably available upload capacity. This is arithmetic applied to YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Check YouTube’s network tips and the terms of your internet plan rather than assuming outbound data is unlimited or free.
A home PC relies on household power, the local network, and the ISP, as well as a plan for restarting or recovering the stream after failures. A cloud VM moves the compute off-site, but does not by itself guarantee the reliability of the whole production path: YouTube ingest, provider or zone availability, and the stream-input connection still matter. The right cost comparison includes any backup or monitoring needed to meet your own uptime target.

Build a like-for-like monthly worksheet

For a specific comparison, record the PC’s measured draw during the actual scene, local electricity rate, intended cloud region and machine, video settings, data-transfer terms, and reliability provisions. Then compare totals for the same number of hours. Treat provider prices as configuration-specific snapshots, not universal monthly prices; Google’s listed T4 arithmetic above excludes the machine and other charges.
