OBS and FFmpeg do not have fixed electricity costs, and the available sources do not establish a controlled power test or general 24/7 cost for either. The answer depends on what each setup must do, the whole system’s measured power draw, and your local electricity and hosting costs. To compare them fairly, match the output and production work, then measure.
Why the software names do not determine the cost
OBS is a production application: it can capture sources, compose scenes, render them, and encode the output. FFmpeg is a media tool that can either pass through compatible encoded media or decode, filter, and re-encode it. Those are different workloads. A simple FFmpeg loop using stream copy is not a fair comparison with OBS rendering several animated scenes.
OBS says its CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Scene rendering also uses GPU resources, and contention can affect performance. FFmpeg’s workload likewise changes substantially depending on whether it stream-copies or transcodes. OBS system requirements; OBS encoding performance troubleshooting; FFmpeg documentation.

Average watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— hours running = kilowatt-hours (kWh)
kWh Ă— your rate per kWh = electricity cost
For continuous operation, measure across a representative streaming interval rather than relying on a short idle reading. A plug-in watt meter can measure the whole setup, but it cannot isolate the power used by OBS or FFmpeg from the computer and its other components. DOE’s educational material gives the relation “kWh = kW x hrs” and describes a watt meter as an optional measurement tool. Keep the comparison like for like
Measure each option on the same machine and match the source material, output resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and comparable scene or filter functions. Run each configuration for a representative period and repeat or average measurements. CPU utilization alone is not an electricity-cost measurement.
Include only costs that actually change
Beyond electricity, count a computer or GPU bought specifically for streaming, incremental cloud compute or storage, metered upload data, restart or uptime measures, and setup and maintenance time. ISP, VPS, and support costs depend on the provider, location, and plan; there is no universal fee to insert. Treat software subscriptions as a separate cost only after verifying the current price for the software and plan in question.

When FFmpeg may cost less
FFmpeg may use less power for a simple loop of compatible, already encoded content when stream copy meets the need and no scene composition or filtering is required. That is an inference from how stream copy avoids decoding and encoding—not a published power test. FFmpeg explains that stream copy cannot perform work requiring decoded frames, such as filtering, and describes transcoding as computationally expensive. FFmpeg documentation.
If the job needs filters or a different output format, FFmpeg may have to decode and re-encode. Measure that actual workflow instead of assuming FFmpeg is always the lighter option.

When OBS may cost less overall
OBS may be the less costly choice if you need its scene, capture, and production functions and already own a suitable machine. Replacing those functions with scripts or paid hosted production can add labor or service costs, but that trade-off depends on your workflow. OBS’s documented workload includes scene composition and rendering as well as encoding; the documentation does not publish a comparative OBS-versus-FFmpeg cost. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Consider hardware encoding, but verify the result
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in a supported GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, while noting that older encoder generations can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. Check which encoder and settings your system supports, then confirm both output quality and whole-system power draw. OBS hardware encoding.

Hold YouTube’s output settings constant
Any comparison needs to use a configuration YouTube accepts. Its live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not over four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and says it transcodes live streams into other output formats for viewers. Match your target settings between the two workflows rather than comparing streams with different output requirements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate guidance.
Is a VPS cheaper than leaving a PC on?
Not automatically. Cloud processing is a deployment choice, not an inherent property of OBS or FFmpeg. YouTube lists cloud-based live processing among encoder options, but that does not establish that a generic VPS is suitable or cheaper. Before comparing, obtain current regional compute, GPU, network, and storage rates, then include any data-transfer charges and the cost of managing restarts and reliability. YouTube’s list of live encoders identifies service and hardware categories; it is not a price comparison or endorsement.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to keep playing around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live production workflow.
