Yes—but mainly through bandwidth, not a demonstrated YouTube codec fee. YouTube recommends lower contribution bitrates for H.265 (HEVC) than for H.264 at several matching resolutions and frame rates. If H.265 delivers acceptable quality for your footage at those lower rates, a nonstop stream sends less data and needs less upload capacity. Whether that reduces your bill depends on your internet plan, encoder, and workflow. YouTube’s published guidance says it transcodes incoming live video for viewers; the official pages cited here do not establish a codec-specific YouTube ingest charge.
Where the cost difference comes from
Codec choice can affect the amount of video data you send to YouTube, but it does not by itself determine the total cost of a 24/7 channel. Separate the costs into the contribution connection, encoding equipment and electricity, any separately billed cloud encoding, and any platform fee that is actually documented.
- Upload bandwidth and data: A lower bitrate reduces sustained upstream demand and the data sent over the connection. That matters most on a constrained upload link or a plan that meters or caps data.
- Encoding equipment and power: A local computer or encoder has a purchase or rental cost and uses electricity. Codec alone is not enough to calculate the difference: hardware implementation and encoding workload matter, and the sources do not provide power measurements or electricity tariffs.
- YouTube Live: YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Its cited live settings and protocol pages do not state an ingest price or a different fee for H.264 versus H.265.
- Cloud encoding: A separate service may bill for encoding. Google Cloud Live Stream API publishes configuration-dependent H.264 and H.265 rates on its pricing page. That is a separately billed service, not a price for sending an encoder feed directly to YouTube Live.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate comparison
YouTube’s live encoder settings guide lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs and gives bitrate recommendations according to codec, resolution, and frame rate. In the table, YouTube groups H.265 and AV1 in one column; the figures are recommendations, not a measurement that every H.265 stream will match H.264’s picture quality at the lower rate.
| Incoming resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | H.265/AV1 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide notes that lower-end suggested HEVC rates can save bandwidth, especially for 4K. Treat the table as a starting point: verify the image quality with your actual content and encoder before relying on a lower rate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds) in its encoder settings guidance.

How much data can a nonstop stream send?
For a simple estimate, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by streaming seconds, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. The estimates below use a continuous 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds) and decimal terabytes. They exclude audio overhead, protocol overhead, downtime, and bitrate variation; they are calculations from YouTube’s recommendations, not figures published by YouTube.
| Bitrate | Estimated data in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 3.24 TB |
| 12 Mbps | 3.89 TB |
| 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB |
| 17 Mbps | 5.51 TB |
| 30 Mbps | 9.72 TB |
| 35 Mbps | 11.34 TB |
| 42 Mbps | 13.61 TB |
| 50 Mbps | 16.20 TB |
At 1080p60, the recommended 12 Mbps H.265/AV1 rate works out to about 3.89 TB per 30 days, compared with about 5.51 TB at H.264’s 17 Mbps. At 4K60, 35 Mbps works out to about 11.34 TB, compared with 16.20 TB at 50 Mbps. Actual billable usage depends on how your provider measures data and on your plan. An unlimited fixed-price connection may have no direct dollar saving, although lower bitrate still reduces required upload capacity.

Check protocol and HDR compatibility before switching
Codec support depends on the ingest protocol and the encoder, so do not assume that a codec listed on a general settings page works with every protocol combination. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMP and H.264 plus H.265 (HEVC) for HLS, and describes HLS as better for 4K because it supports HEVC. Confirm that your encoder supports the codec, protocol, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.
If your workflow includes HDR, codec choice may be a requirement rather than just a cost decision: YouTube’s HDR live guidance says HDR live streaming is currently supported only with H.265/HEVC and calls for HLS output in the described configuration. Check YouTube’s current HDR instructions and your encoder’s capabilities before building the workflow around HDR.

A practical way to decide
- Confirm what you can actually send. Check the encoder and ingest protocol against YouTube’s protocol guidance. If you need HDR, confirm the HEVC/HLS requirements for the configuration you plan to use.
- Test the picture at the candidate bitrate. Compare the same representative footage at the H.264 and H.265/HEVC settings you intend to run. YouTube’s recommendations do not guarantee identical quality, and scenes with motion or fine detail may behave differently from static material.
- Check upstream capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips say total outgoing bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom. Count audio and any other outgoing traffic when checking a connection.
- Translate bitrate into your real bill. Estimate monthly data using your expected operating time, then compare it with your provider’s measurement method, cap, and tariff. Do not assume lower data means lower cost if your connection has a fixed unlimited price.
- Include equipment and service costs separately. Account for the machine or encoder, electricity, and any cloud service you choose. Do not use a cloud provider’s encoding rates as though they were YouTube’s direct-ingest fees.
